This scoping review examines 22 peer-reviewed empirical studies published between 1973 and 2025, retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science databases, that examine the motivations expressed by entrants to police careers. It analyzes theoretical models, methods, contexts, concepts, and contributions to scholarship, classifying motivations according to Self-Determination Theory (SDT). It also highlights key studies, offers several practical recommendations to improve police recruitment processes, identifies gaps, and outlines directions for future research. Additionally, it discusses connections between SDT and levels of job satisfaction, professional commitment, career outlook and retention. The review contributes to advancing the debate on why individuals pursue policing careers and how their motivations may be shaped by professional practice, organizational culture, and early exposure to police culture.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46026,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Law Crime and Justice","volume":"83 ","pages":"Article 100788"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145220461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To do so, we conducted a scoping review of scholarly and grey literature due to the emerging nature of this topic and the evidence on it, in order to summarise existing knowledge and understand the gaps in theory and policymaking; as well as qualitative online interviews with professionals with expertise in technology, child protection, social work, law and policymaking that were informed by our scoping review and aimed to further explore the gaps and themes that arose through our examination of emerging literature. Evidently, the risks arising from Extended Reality may impact all layers of a child's ecology and may therefore have long-term repercussions for children, negatively affecting their growth and welfare, as well as their immediate and wider environments. Given the multidimensionality of these harms, preventative and responsive efforts need to follow an equally multidimensional approach to safeguard children in these new, immersive online worlds.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46026,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Law Crime and Justice","volume":"83 ","pages":"Article 100786"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145320535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since 1974, state compensation is provided in Ireland through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal (CICT). In interviewing 21 individuals with experience of the CICT process, including victims of crime, legal and victim support practitioners and former CICT decision-makers, this article examines shortcomings in how applicants are treated by the CICT. These shortcoming include the presence of significant delays in processing times and decision-making, poor telephone manner and communication procedures, inadequate case management systems and the existence of strict procedural requirements which do not take into consideration the consequences of criminal victimisation, including the trauma inflicted on victims. This article also evaluates recent improvements in how victims are treated in the process, the reasons as to why these improvements have been made and the effect, if any, on victim satisfaction levels with the CICT. Overall, this article concludes that reducing delays, improving communication procedures, better managing victims' expectations and relaxing the strict procedural rules all contribute to achieving procedural justice for victims of crime at the CICT. If state compensation frameworks can implement such improvements, the rights of crime victims under European Union (EU) law to both state compensation and protection from secondary victimisation can be better respected by all Member States in the EU.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46026,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Law Crime and Justice","volume":"83 ","pages":"Article 100790"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145267209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These provisions were combined with and supplemented by the criminalisation of luring a person to leave Poland with the intention of forcing them into marriage. This legislation was rather unexpected, considering that at the time, the government and the parliamentary majority were composed of alt-right political parties that were actively opposing both women's rights and the influx of immigrants, especially from what politicians referred to as “culturally distant countries”.</div><div>In this paper, I present the newly adopted legislation and analyse its reasons against the backdrop of two case studies: the Polish Roma community and the Chechen community in Poland. The latter is based on fieldwork involving interviews with refugee women who experienced various forms of domestic violence while in Poland, as well as experts working with this group. These forms of gender-based violence included forced marriages, mostly in the form of early marriages. The paper aims to assess whether this new regulation has the potential to improve the protection of potential victims, especially women with migration backgrounds in Poland and, more broadly, whether criminal law is the appropriate response to social problems and the best tool to protect potential victims when abusers are family members.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46026,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Law Crime and Justice","volume":"83 ","pages":"Article 100774"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144919973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Triggered by high-profile cases, the approach introduced specialized police methods, pilot projects, and the establishment of the National Expertise Centre for Honour-Based Violence (LEC EGG). HBV is defined as violence committed from a collective mentality to restore family honour, often involving group pressure and cultural norms. Dutch policy focuses primarily on sexuality and family-related contexts, while acknowledging diversity and avoiding cultural essentialism. Prevalence data are limited to police figures, with most cases involving threats and abuse rather than lethal violence. Although HBV is often framed as a migrant issue, research stresses its global nature and warns against stereotyping. Legal responses have shifted from cultural relativism to stricter punishment, rejecting cultural defence as a mitigating factor. Current debates concern whether HBV requires specific criminal provisions or can be addressed under general law. The Dutch model illustrates the tension between universal human rights and culturally sensitive interventions, highlighting the need for nuanced strategies to prevent and prosecute HBV effectively.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46026,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Law Crime and Justice","volume":"83 ","pages":"Article 100803"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145568218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing from in-depth qualitative interviews with 61 male survivors, the research adopts a Social-Ecological Model to systematically examine barriers across multiple contextual layers. Findings indicate that at the individual level, survivors commonly internalize shame and self-blame, impeding initial disclosure. Interpersonal and institutional factors, such as strained familial relationships, the absence of trusted adults, and systemic denial within educational settings, further restrict opportunities to disclose. At the societal level, pervasive gender norms, legal invisibility of male survivors, and entrenched rape myths coalesce into a formidable barrier, effectively reinforcing a culture of silence. The study synthesizes these multi-dimensional findings into a novel ecological constraint-opportunity model, highlighting the complex, reciprocal interactions among individual, relational, institutional, and societal constraints. By foregrounding how hegemonic masculinity and cultural ideologies intersect to suppress male victimhood narratives, this research contributes significantly to understanding the culturally-specific dynamics of CSA disclosure in non-Western contexts. It underscores the necessity of shifting intervention strategies from individual-focused to broader systemic changes that actively challenge cultural stigma, institutional passivity, and legal marginalization of male survivors, thereby fostering environments conducive to justice-seeking and healing.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":46026,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Law Crime and Justice","volume":"83 ","pages":"Article 100807"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145614400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on doctrinal analysis, policy review, and contemporary medical standards, the study explores how forensic medical evidence—when properly collected and interpreted—can substantiate legal claims in rape prosecutions and strengthen access to justice for victims. However, the research identifies systemic deficiencies: outdated laws, the lack of procedural uniformity, insufficient forensic training, infrastructural limitations, and weak institutional coordination between legal and medical bodies. These obstacles not only compromise evidentiary integrity but also erode victim trust and delay justice. The article argues for an urgent recalibration of the medico-legal landscape in Bangladesh, advocating for a harmonized and victim-centered framework that integrates forensic medicine into the legal process.
