Additionally, financial stability is imperative in a Western society that values wealth and upward mobility. Together, financial literacy is a crucial combination of skills and education that allows people to make efficient/knowledgeable monetary decisions. Although many U.S.-born citizens struggle with financial competence, U.S. born Blacks appear to suffer more economical disadvantages. To assist in ameliorating these disparities, this article promotes a therapeutic financial literacy group for Black male teenagers, which is thematically based on popular rap songs glamorizing money.","PeriodicalId":45501,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Specialists in Group Work","volume":"44 1","pages":"165 - 181"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73183985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a focus on development from a deficit model and lack of attention to their complex and multidimensional identities. In addition, popular media invariably portray Black male youth through a myopic lens as needing to overcome a litany of challenges and struggles. The purpose of this article is to begin to combat this myopic view. This article further explores the notion of listening to learn from the voices of Black male youth prior to implementing group work practices. Implications for group work practice are provided.","PeriodicalId":45501,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Specialists in Group Work","volume":"220 1","pages":"112 - 99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79719674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated the effects of a culturally responsive group intervention developed for African-American youth on dimensions of school engagement. Student and teacher perceptions of school engagement before, after, and 6 weeks following the intervention were analyzed for intervention effects with a particular focus on the four dimensions of engagement: academic, behavioral, cognitive, and affective engagement. Understanding how groups can facilitate change for this population is crucial to become a culturally competent counselor. Further, studying the best practices of group work is essential to better serving African Americans. Through a content analysis of scientific literature from 1980 to 2018 on trauma and group work with African American children and adolescents, authors explore the common themes that emerged. Counseling implications from an advocacy and multicultural perspective along with future recommendations are discussed at the end.","PeriodicalId":45501,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Specialists in Group Work","volume":"1 1","pages":"56 - 75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84143798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, African American adolescents are at increased risk for dropping out of schools and engaging in health risk behaviors due to contextual stressors such as poverty, neighborhood disorder, community violence, and racial discrimination. Group counseling is a developmentally appropriate approach for working with adolescents; however, the counselor training concerning culture-specific considerations for working with African American adolescents in group settings was rarely explored. Therefore, this article aims to serve as a fundamental conceptual framework for working with African American adolescents in groups across different settings by addressing the appropriateness of group counseling for African American adolescents; reflecting on the current counselor preparation and training in group work with African American adolescents; discussing the development, culture, stressors, and strengths of African American adolescents; and providing implications and practical suggestions.","PeriodicalId":45501,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Specialists in Group Work","volume":"1 1","pages":"3 - 21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81961315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
