Publishing Student-Generated Problems in an OER 在OER中发布学生生成的问题

Osgood","doi":"10.3991/ijep.v12i4.30429","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3991/ijep.v12i4.30429","url":null,"abstract":"Fundamental engineering courses provide learning opportunities for students to develop problem solving and creativity skills, connect theoretical course material to the real-world, and solve complex, abstract problems such as those found in the workplace. Through a mixed methods study of students in a statics course in a small Canadian university, we explored student motivation and perception of composing and publishing their own course-relevant problems in an open educational resource (OER) textbook. We found that generating and solving their own problems for each of the six homework assignments helped students to anchor theory in the real-world, be creative, and understand the material more fully. In total, 93% of students in the course created at least one student-generated homework problem, and after the semester ended, 58% of students submitted a combined total of 59 high-quality, interesting, real-world examples to be included in the OER textbook. Of the 28 study participants, 26 students (93%) felt the activity should be repeated in future years. Students were motivated to publishing examples in the OER textbook by a desire to help future students and gain understanding of the material. Internet of Things (IoT) is one such technology that is sweeping the economic, business and service landscapes with its disruption mechanisms that influence areas such as smart homes, hospitals, cities, as well as transportation and energy utilization with many exciting and novel applications. Additionally, the job market is evolving at a rate that makes it difficult for universities to sustain a stable programme structure, especially in engineering and information and communication technology disciplines as well as specializations and domains associated with technology. While several universities worldwide have established IoT degree programs at bachelor and master levels, institutions in developing countries are still contemplating the idea of pioneering such venture due to a number of reasons related to technology vacillation as well as market and social acceptance.  Princess Sumaya University for Technology has therefore designed a bachelor degree programme on IoT Engineering in order to bridge the gap in the Jordanian ICT market and to meet demands for specialized engineers in this rapidly evolving area. The university adapted an optimization design process of the program including a cycle of consultation with stakeholders, followed by a formal procedure of rectification and accreditation. Heuristics are mental shortcuts to draw conclusions when evaluating interactive systems. In this study, a set of heuristics had been discovered by end-users while developing a series of prototypes of a test blueprint system. This study suggests that the design process of an interactive system should cater to the following two (2) components, namely: technical heuristics and specialized domain heuristics. Various names have been given to this pedagogy; experiential learning, project-based learning, active learning, problem-based learning are a handful of names used to describe this evolving pedagogy. The main challenge faced by educators in educating undergraduate students to be independent thinkers and problem solvers, has been the driving force fueling the shift in pedagogy. The skill sets needed to be successful in the workforce has also evolved over the years. Today’s employees are not only expected to demonstrate proficiency in green skills in their field of study, but must also possess soft skills required to be competitive in the industry. Gone are the days where engineers worked in silos applying their green skills to create for the common good. To be productive, employers expect today’s engineer to demonstrate the ability to work in teams, communicate effectively, while applying the technical and analytical know-how needed to achieve a desired goal. To ensure that undergraduate students have these desired skills, most engineering educators have shifted away from the traditional all lecture classes and are applying active learning pedagogies. The development of information and communication systems as well as of microprocessor controllers has enabled a creation of monitoring systems that can be used for tracking reliability of structures and constructions in civil engineering, with described key features. This paper describes in detail the architecture of the Civil Engineering Structures Reliability Monitoring (CERM) system. The system has been designed for the purposes of the Technical Mechanics and Theory of Constructions Department at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Nis. Unlike general commercial monitoring systems, the CERM system has been specially designed for the purpose of reliability monitoring, and its potential will be further exploited in this paper. It is based on usage of universal microprocessor controllers Integraf of series 10X, along with specially designed software package.
