Rudling (bio) Myroslav Shkandrij, In the Maelstrom: The Waffen-SS \"Galicia\" Division and Its Legacy ( Montreal&Kingston: McGill-Queen's University Press, 2023). 424 pp., ill. References. Index. ISBN: 978-0-2280-1653-3. The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician) occupies a central place in the Ukrainian diaspora's pantheon of heroes of the fatherland. Since 1945, its legacy has been the object of intense debate. Myroslav Shkandrij's book is one of few scholarly works on the unit and, to date, the most ambitious. A professor emeritus of Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba, Shkandrij was raised in the United Kingdom, in the Ukrainian émigré community dominated by the Bandera wing of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, OUN(b). For Shkandrij, working on the Galizian SS also means to a considerable degree writing family history. His father was a volunteer in the Waffen-SS (P. xvii), his father in-law was the editor of Krakivs'ki visti, the leading Ukrainian-language newspaper in Hans Frank's General Government. Shkandrij has a lifetime of experience with the Ukrainian diaspora, with a political background in far left, Trotskyite activism (P. xvii). The author's motivations for writing the book are personal; it is obvious that Shkandrij is stung by depictions of the Ukrainian Waffen-SS men in mainstream media, which, he argues, \"showed no interest in what the veterans had experienced. Instead the coverage revelled in a nightmarish image of monsters 'living next door'\" (P. xvii). This, Shkandrij writes, \"did not square with my personal experience\" (P. xvii). Shkandrij set out to challenge negative depictions of the unit, also taking on \"the most controversial issues\" (P. 4). In line with trends in North American academia, the book contains a trigger warning (P. xviii). The book is divided into five sections; \"Motives,\" \"Actions,\" \"Camps,\" \"Stories,\" and \"Reappraisals.\" The first two sections – on background and military history are relatively short (Pp. 15–158) and based mostly on literature published by the Waffen-SS veterans themselves. Of the subsections, chapter 7, on the Galician SS Volunteer regiments, counts among the strongest, though it closely follows the work of Michael Melnyk, a chronicler of the unit – and, like Shkandrij, the son of a Waffen-SS volunteer. Though well-written, this section offers little that is new. Particularly notable is the near-total absence of German-language sources; a handful of references, cited in secondary sources, are given as \"Bundesarkhiv [End Page 220] [sic], Berlin\" and \"Budesarkhiv [sic] Aussenstelle Ludwigsberg [sic]\" (Pp. xi, 389) and are both misspelled. Limited knowledge of German may offer a partial explanation for the book's imbalance in regard to sources. Jewish voices about the division's activities are absent. Much stronger is Shkandrij's section on the postwar","PeriodicalId":45377,"journal":{"name":"Ab Imperio-Studies of New Imperial History and Nationalism in the Post-Soviet Space","volume":"2013 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135445113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ISBN: 978-5-907532-45-8.* Англоязычный оригинал рецензируемой книги Нэнси Коллманн был опубликован еще в 2017 г., а сейчас русский перевод делает книгу более доступной для отечественного читателя. В одной из ранних рецензий на нее французская исследовательница Мари-Карин Шауб обратила внимание на желание автора отойти от взгляда на российскую историю через европейское зеркало, изображавшее страну в категориях архаизма и отсталости, и вписать ее в глобальную историю империй. Тем самым подчеркиваются черты, общие для евразийских и восточных империй, но также проясняется и их специфика.1 Этот тезис представляется нам оправданным: Коллманн открыто отрицает цивилизационные стереотипы и предлагает рассматривать \"Россию\" раннего Нового времени в духе концепции \"империи различий\". Лейтмотивом исследования служит идея вариативности политических практик, применявшихся монархами московского и российского государств с целью обеспечения их относительной стабильности. Центральная роль разнообразия переносится автором и на другие сферы жизни [End Page 193] общества, демонстрировавшего неоднородность сущностных характеристик на всех этапах своей истории. Таким образом, \"империя различий\" проявляет себя сразу на нескольких уровнях: многообразия политических стратегий, применяемых верховной властью в отношении полиэтничного и поликонфессионального населения страны; вариативности организации жизни внутри разных групп населения и сословий; тактического плюрализма административных реформ. Различия предстают фундаментальной категорией, объясняющей особенности политики и повседневной жизни, а также формирующей стратегию власти в не меньшей степени, чем воля законного монарха. Коллманн реконструирует панорамную и динамическую картину постоянной трансформации российской политии и сферы имперского воображения на протяжении нескольких веков. Начало повествования о \"России\" и ее \"империи\" с середины XV в. вызывает закономерный вопрос об обоснованности выбора этой точки отсчета. М. М. Кром отметил в своей рецензии, что в книге этот выбор не объясняется напрямую, оставаясь фигурой умол чания.2 Вероятно, следуя провозглашенной концепции \"империи различий\", Коллманн полагает, что к 1450-м гг. масштаб и многогранность разнообразия в формирующемся Московском государстве достигли некой критической величины, позволяя говорить о новом его качестве – \"империи де-факто\" (Глава 2). Претендуя на статус региональной державы после упадка Великой Орды, Москва имела поликультурных подданных – славян, финно-угров и тюрок. Территориальная экспансия начала обосновываться миссией \"собирания русских земель\" домонгольского периода несмотря на то, что \"элиты, княжеские династии, религия, культура и основы национальной мифологии, появившиеся в Киевской Руси, были унаслед","PeriodicalId":45377,"journal":{"name":"Ab Imperio-Studies of New Imperial History and Nationalism in the Post-Soviet Space","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135445121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Bentham Brothers and Russia: The Imperial Russian Constitution and the St. Petersburg Panopticon by Roger Bartlett (review) 《边沁兄弟与俄罗斯:俄罗斯帝国宪法与圣彼得堡圆形监狱》罗杰·巴特利特著(书评)

ISBN: 978-1-80008-238-0. The intricate connections of the brothers Jeremy and Samuel Bentham with Alexander I's Russia are addressed in this book by Roger Bartlett, an emeritus professor at University College London. Consisting of four chapters that are highly disproportionate in length, an introduction, and an epilogue, the study lacks both a clear thesis and a unified narrative, such that the introduction and chapters could each serve as stand-alone articles. Bartlett does, however, present a unifying theme early in the book, which he emphasizes throughout – the pivotal role played by patronage for such ambitious careerists as the Benthams. Whereas Samuel managed to secure the patronage of Potemkin and the Vorontsovs early on, and later gained other supporters, Jeremy won moral encouragement and personal representation that nevertheless did not lead to financial benefits. The brothers shared a role, though, that Bartlett defines as a \"projector\": \"'Projectors' might nowadays be called entrepreneurs or inventors,\" he writes, \"and their 'project' probably a start-up enterprise\" (P. 5). Despite Russia being influenced primarily by French culture during this period, Great Britain also exerted an influence, with St. Petersburg hosting British expatriates from its very beginnings and Anglophilia being in vogue since the late eighteenth century. The Benthams were therefore not unique in seeking careers and promoting projects in Russia. But their timing was fraught, as the Napoleonic era's shifting alliances and Alexander I's indecisiveness would subject their career pursuits to false leads, interruptions, and outright reversals. In his introduction, Bartlett limns well the international scene that the Benthams hoped to star in; but one curiosity of the book is that it shows they ended up playing only minor walk-on roles. Failure, not success, characterized the Benthams' activities vis-à-vis Alexandrine Russia, so this book is largely about missed cues, bungled opportunities, and disappointing outcomes. All the book's sections are numbered consecutively starting with the introduction, so the opening chapter is numbered \"2.\" It spans almost a hundred pages and includes numerous digressions. Its main protagonist is Jeremy – a child prodigy, jurist by training and craft, and fountainhead of the philosophy of utilitarianism, [End Page 199] who tried to secure an authorial role in Alexander I's inchoate project to codify Russia's laws. To represent him, he relied on the Frenchman Pierre Étienne Louis Dumont, his collaborator, popularizer, and editor, as well as a habitué of Russian aristocratic society. Snapshots of the Soul: Photo-Poetic Encounters in Modern Russian Culture by Molly Thomasy Blasing (review) 《灵魂的快照:现代俄罗斯文化中的诗情画意》作者:莫莉·托马西·布莱辛

Selected Bibliography. Index. ISBN: 978-1-5017-5370-1. This book introduces the concept of \"photo-poetics,\" defined by the author as \"those elements of photographic processes and modes of photographic representation that give rise to new forms of lyric expression\" (P. 5). Using this concept, Blasing examines the works of four prominent Russian poets: Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetaeva, Joseph Brodsky, and Bella Akhmadulina. The book consists of an introduction, five chapters, and a coda. Each chapter analyzes the relationship of one of these poets with photography, while the fifth chapter explores the role of photography in the works of late Soviet and post-Soviet poets, thus demonstrating the influence that these four well-known figures had on younger generations. The author studies photographic motifs, themes, and allusions in the poetry and prose of the four protagonists, drawing on a wide range of additional sources: their personal correspondence, essays, interviews, recollections of their descendants, and black-and-white photographs. Each new chapter effectively builds on the findings of the previous one, thereby creating a sense of continuity and a cohesive reading experience that makes the book feel like a unified whole rather than a collection of disparate parts. By using this approach, Blasing masterfully shows how the adoption of \"photo-poetic thinking\" played a pivotal role in shaping the distinctive artistic styles of these poets. Chapter 1 analyzes the photo-poetic motifs in Boris Pasternak's oeuvre as Blasing sets out to prove her claim that some of his poetry could not have been written before the invention of photography. She skillfully weaves together biographical facts from Pasternak's childhood, which was marked by interest in visual culture such as magic lanterns, photographic flip-books, and cinema, with examples that reveal how he utilized the aesthetic and technological aspects of the photographic process. Through close readings of Pasternak's poems, excerpts from his novels in prose and in verse, philosophical writings, and letters, a vivid portrait of the famous poet emerges. It reveals someone who had a fascination with photography, which is perhaps best exemplified in My Sister Life: \"In conveying visual experience and the interplay of consciousness and perception in his poetry, Pasternak uses photographic tropes as a way of isolating the experience of perceiving, [End Page 245] capturing, and processing moments in time\" (P. 55). While using photo-poetics to explore the conflict between motion and stasis as well as to communicate a variety of the poet's concerns, this chapter emphasizes the significant impact that photography had on Past","PeriodicalId":45377,"journal":{"name":"Ab Imperio-Studies of New Imperial History and Nationalism in the Post-Soviet Space","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135446257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
