First adopted by the Romanian state and, in 1924, by the dominant Romanian Orthodox Church, the Gregorian calendar provoked opposition among the Orthodox believers, especially in the former Russian province of Bessarabia, which was incorporated into Romania in 1918. The mass discontent soon spread to Romanian Moldavia as well. Seen as a heresy, the calendar change led to the rise of a dissident movement that became known as the Old Calendarism. Espousing an apocalyptic worldview, Old Calendarists were branded as politically subversive by the government for rejecting the Romanian national project.Резюме:В статье исследуется проблемное отношение в румынском обществе межвоенного периода к введению григорианского календаря. Сначала григорианский календарь был принят румынским государством, а в 1924 г. на него перешла господствующая Румынская православная церковь. Это вызвало протест многих православных верующих, особенно в Бессарабии–бывшей российской губернии, включенной в состав Румынии в 1918 г. Массовое недовольство вскоре распространилось и на румынскую Молдавию. Протестующие считали изменение календаря ересью, что привело к возникновению \"старостильного\" движения в православной церкви. Разделявшие апокалиптическое мировоззрение старостильники рассматривались правительством как политически подрывной элемент, отрицающий румынский национальный проект.","PeriodicalId":45377,"journal":{"name":"Ab Imperio-Studies of New Imperial History and Nationalism in the Post-Soviet Space","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91343604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

White","doi":"10.1353/imp.2022.0038","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/imp.2022.0038","url":null,"abstract":"SUMMARY:This article examines the construction of an Orthodox community on the isle of Vormsi on the western coast of the Russian Empire's Estland Province through the approaches of national indifference and confessional ambiguity. Vormsi, a locale overwhelmingly populated by mobile Swedish-speakers, posed particular challenges to the Orthodox clergy both during and after conversion in 1886, especially in terms of language and the evangelical legacy left by a charismatic Swedish preacher. The article analyzes the efforts by a mixed team of Russo-Estonian clergy to claim Vormsi as a space of Orthodoxy and to connect it to the Russian Empire.Резюме:Оперируя концепцией национальной индифферентности и религиозной неопределенности, автор статьи рассматривает случай острова Вормси у западного побережья современной Эстонии. Его протестантское шведоязычное население в 1880-х годах решилось перейти в православие, но после 1905 г. вернулось к лютеранству. И островитяне, и местное русско-эстонское православное духовенство рассматривали обращение как демонстрацию политической лояльности Российской империи. Представления о русской, шведской и эстонской этнической принадлежности также играли свою роль в этой истории, хотя и второстепенную.","PeriodicalId":45377,"journal":{"name":"Ab Imperio-Studies of New Imperial History and Nationalism in the Post-Soviet Space","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81901580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on archival examples of Inochentist practices of resistance, this article argues that eschatology was an important factor influencing Bessarabian peasants' rejection of the Romanian national project. Taking account of the distinct brand of existential eschatology characteristic of Inochentism helps us grasp both the power of religious commitment to override calls for ethnic or national solidarity and the inability of the Romanian state and Orthodox Church to persuade peasants that it was in their existential interest to support and participate in the new political order.Резюме:В межвоенный период и в начале 1940-х гг. румынское государство активно боролось с религиозным инакомыслием. Одним из инструментов этой борьбы было насильственное обращение в православие тех, кого официально рассматривали как сектантов, включая членов общины иннокентьевцев в присоединенной к Румынии Бессарабии. Опираясь на архивные свидетельства практик сопротивления со стороны иннокентьевцев, автор статьи утверждает, что эсхатологические настроения были важным фактором неприятия бессарабскими крестьянами румынского национального проекта. Именно эсхатологические идеи иннокентьевцев объясняют как преобладание приверженности религиозной общине над этнической или национальной солидарностью, так и неспособность румынского государства и православной церкви убедить крестьян в том, что участие в новом политическом порядке отвечало их жизненным интересам.","PeriodicalId":45377,"journal":{"name":"Ab Imperio-Studies of New Imperial History and Nationalism in the Post-Soviet Space","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2022-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82676433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
