For the students studying in English-medium settings, it is in their interest to acquire vocabulary in their disciplines as this is vital to academic success. While students recognize the importance of discipline-specific vocabulary acquisition, they are typically unable to do so due to their heavy work on learning and assessment tasks. With the advent of mobile technology, one way to address this problem is to create vocabulary apps. To meet this need, this paper presents a gamified, discipline-specific vocabulary learning app Books vs Brains@PolyU. It was developed to help busy undergraduates to build a repertoire of the vocabulary across seven disciplines. We explored students’ perceptions and evaluation of this tool via interviews with sixteen student participants of the project. The results show that students found the tool useful and motivating, indicating the effectiveness of the app in helping busy undergraduates to build and expand their knowledge of discipline-specific vocabulary.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2021-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43263641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to the relative newness of the technology there is a call for more studies on how MIM impacts teaching and learning. To address this need, this case study investigates how MIM mediates online knowledge construction within the context of an economics course project. Online interactions over the course of a 16-week semester were coded and analysed using the Interaction Analysis Model. Analysis of 4,685 online messages revealed evidence of all five phases of knowledge construction: the sharing of information, identification of dissonance, negotiation of meaning, testing, and collective understanding. Both the structure of the course project and the affordances of connectivity, context-free access, and quasi-synchronous communication were found to be key factors in facilitating the knowledge construction process. Findings indicate that MIM may be effective supporting online collaborative learning. Furthermore, specific examples of student interactions offer insights into the complexity of online discussion possible via MIM and the interrelationships between the various phases of online knowledge construction.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69805362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research evaluates excessive use within a user community in a developing country landscape. It is estimated that many young people spend too much time on their phones and the projections suggest even higher numbers with disturbing estimations. The unravelling of contexts surrounding the excessive use of digital devices such as smartphones and the elements that lead to it are mostly unexplored. Consequently, the study illuminated the fundamental mechanisms that influence excessive use of smartphones by learners using perspectives from the Incentive-sensitization Theory (IST) to add scope and breadth. A total of 110 undergraduate students participated in the study. The fundamental results showed that the increase in the volume of activities such as online games, virtual world games and social media was responsible for excessive use. The findings provided an understanding of the relationship between depression-like behaviour and anxiety and shed new light on the influence of excessive use, smartphone stress and depression-related symptoms on students. The study outlined the implications of the results for prevention and regulation.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69805563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article presents a qualitative study of student performances in two original learning tasks, one related to critical thinking and the other related to creative thinking. The study was carried out in an obligatory physics teaching course for undergraduate students. The first learning task focused on critical thinking, in which students were asked to evaluate various defects in an artificially contextualized electrostatic exercise. Students’ performances, collected via Google Classroom, show that they were able to detect and justify its contextual defects using real-world knowledge. A big challenge to students was to provide quantitative arguments against noticed huge electric charge allegedly created in described electrostatic cling. The second learning task focused on creative thinking, in which students engaged in a multi-step learning sequence to elaborate one explanation and two predictions related to enigmatic behavior of a tomato. A secret and closed Facebook group was administered to present the subtasks in the sequence and receive students’ answers in real time. The results show that students performed better in the subtasks that called for a near knowledge transfer than in other ones calling for a far knowledge transfer. In their reflective comments about the sequence, students recognized the importance of “thinking out of the box” for deeper learning of physics. Based on the results, suggestions on the design of critical and creative thinking related tasks are discussed for future implementation.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69805437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate pre-service teachers’ accessibility, acceptability, and readiness with respect to mobile learning (M-learning) technology and the relationships between M-learning acceptance and readiness. The questionnaires adopted the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. The survey was conducted with 429 pre-service teachers from public and private universities in Pakistan. It was found that mobile phones and the Internet are easily accessible to pre-service teachers. The results reveal that personal innovation, quality of services, and social influence have a significant direct impact on behavioral intention to use M-learning technology. Personal innovation and quality of services have an indirect effect on M-learning readiness. On the contrary, the study found a direct effect of effort expectancy, performance expectancy, personal innovation, quality of services, and behavioral intentions on M-learning readiness. The implications of the findings are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69805496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They also help lecturers to track and check student discussions. To improve student learning, it is important for lecturers to identify students’ cognitive engagement in discussion forums. Therefore, this study aims to investigate students’ cognitive engagement in e-learning through content analysis of forum posts. A total of 267 forum posts created by students during one semester were collected for analysis. Inferential statistics were applied to explore the relationship between students’ cognitive engagement and their gender and the number of posts in forums. The results revealed that about half of the students gave their posts without any explanations, which reflected a low level of cognitive engagement. A large number of posts made little contribution to a high level of cognitive engagement. The results also showed no relationship between gender and the level of cognitive engagement. The limitations and implications of this study are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69805421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The access, delivery, and receipt of healthcare involves many stakeholders interacting with different HIT, and the usability of HIT is known to impact the acceptance and adoption of HIT, as well as health outcomes of populations. Understanding the influence that various individual and contextual factors have on the usability of HIT is challenging because of the network of interactions between humans and technology that occur in the same or different contexts within a unique healthcare system. Yet, it is important to identify usability problems in order to be able to design and implement HIT. This article begins by describing the current use of HIT with respect to the healthcare landscape. Next, usability is defined and demonstrated to play a critical role in users’ acceptance and adoption of HIT. The remainder of the article describes a new framework called, healthcare experience design. The healthcare experience design framework models the healthcare experience, which is defined as the composite of all of an individual’s interactions with other humans and HIT. The healthcare experience design framework is a useful conceptual model and methodological approach to identify usability problems in the healthcare system, and its practical application is illustrated using an artificial use case.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2020-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43741454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the number of older adult population and the potential need for caregiver support increases, innovative solutions are essential in supplementing care provided by caregivers. Many studies have been conducted to date to understand the extent to which technologies can be used to address health conditions and disabilities. Assured Living is a wellness monitoring solution by Best Buy Canada designed to provide caregivers insights on family member’s daily activities and provide alerts. To bring Assured Living into the Canadian market, an A Day in the Life was created as a tool to aid in identifying the needs of the caregivers to explore opportunities in the Canadian market. The knowledge for the A Day in the Life was gathered in multiple ways: 1) meetings with health organizations, 2) meetings with organizations serving caregivers and seniors, 3) conversations with family caregivers, 4) observations during walk-throughs with internal and external stakeholders of the Assured Living lab located in Best Buy Canada headquarters. Five themes gathered from the tool include: 1) Safety 2) Activities of daily living 3) Virtual care 4) Enjoyment of life and 5) Overarching concerns about support and communication. A Day in the Life supported in determining general concerns for caregivers, identifying areas of opportunity for the business, and making collaboration with stakeholders effective.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2020-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45128850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prescription medications have associated risks and benefits and it is important for people to be aware of these before and while they are taking medications. One of the approaches to informing people about new prescription medications is that they are provided Consumer Medication Information (CMI). CMI is given to Canadians at the pharmacy when they pick up prescriptions, they will be taking for the first time. This study used semi-structured interviews to examine the lived experiences of a sample of Canadians (N = 36) to identify opportunities for improvement in how and when they are informed about new prescription medications. The findings were synthesized into a journey map. Generally, participants wanted to receive CMI digitally and earlier in the prescription process. Adopting these changes could have several benefits which include loss prevention and increased accessibility to CMI as well as more participatory decision making and opportunities to ask questions. Future research is warranted to explore similar topics with a larger sample and determine what method (e.g., email, website, mobile application) would be most suitable.","PeriodicalId":45327,"journal":{"name":"Knowledge Management & E-Learning-An International Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2020-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45038771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"教育学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
