Clinically, the disease presented as a rapid emaciation and depression followed by death. Weekly point and cumulative mortalities were calculated in two of the flocks. Postmortem examination revealed, initially, an atrophy of the bursa of Fabricious. Later, there were turmours in a proportion of the birds. The tumours were observed in the heart muscle, the liver, intestines, and bursa of fabricious. Later, there were tumours in a proportion of birds. The tumours were observed in heart muscles, the liver, intestines, bursa of Fabricious and the skin. There was swelling, oedema and frequently ulceration of the proventriculus. The spleen was usually spotted and enlarged. Microscopically, lesions consisted of a mixture of both proliferative and necrotic lesions the suspected contributory causative factors were high field infections pressure, failure to vaccinate, vaccination failure and lack of quarantine and other disease control measures. Failure to institute effective control measures against the disease is likely to seriously affect the poultry industry in the country. Using a simple random selection, 87 smallholder pig farms were selected from a total of 179 farms. Data on important farm management factors including, feeding, housing, breeding, preventive measures and general husbandry practices were gathered using semi structured questionnaires.\u0000\u0000The median farm size was 1 acre. The production system used by most farmers was farrow-to- finish. Most farms hired a boar for breeding. All farms kept crossbred pigs of large white and landrace with a mean of 15.7pigs per farm. Most farms used family labor. Most farms had only basic knowledge on pig production and never sought for any extension services. In all the farms, the pigs were stall fed in simple pens throughout the year. The bulk of the feed consisted of commercial feeds followed by swill. The pig raisers supplemented the bulk component of the feeds with farm weeds, kales, green vegetables, sweet potatoes vines, pumpkin leaves and nappier grass. The preventive- medicine practices included iron-deficiency prophylaxis and mange and helminth control.\u0000 The Kenya Veterinarian Vol. 22 2001: pp. 72-75

The main clinical signs observed were sudden collapse, bloating, tetany, and diarrhea, seven of the sick calves died and two were submitted for necropsy. Postmortem findings included acute abomasitis (gastritis) and enteritis in both calves and pneumonia in one. Hemolytic Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in pure cultures and in large numbers from the milk samples and abomasal contents of both calves. It was concluded that the syndrome was staphylococcal milk poisoning. These were performed in the routine administration of antibiotics and fluids for the treatment of horses mainly suffering from colic. The complications noted during examination included peri-phlebitis, thrombosis-phlebitis and peri-venous abscesses of varying sizes at the injection site, and something affecting most of the jugular vein. The different lesions which often could not be determined, particularly in cases of thrombo-phlebitis where partial or complete occlusion of the vein occurred. When noted early, using ultrasonography, exacerbaration of the thrombus could be prevented by avoiding repeated intravenous injection or by the removal of indwelling catheter.
