Ventral hernia is an acquired type of hernia whose main cause is trauma inflicted by violent, blunt force such as kicks, blows, horn thrusts and falling objects (Frank 1970; Keown, 1976; McIlwraith, 1984). Previous abdominal wall surgery, abscesses, or degenerative causes may lead to muscular weakness. The stress of pregnancy and parturition then causes the weakened part of the abdominal wall to give way (Oehme 1965; McIlwraith 1984). Muscular tear follows the pathway of least resistance and in most cases it is in the direction of the fibres of the external oblique muscle (Meek et aI1977; Tirgari 1979). Housing and type of management could be contributory predisposing factors that are not well defined.","PeriodicalId":448931,"journal":{"name":"The Kenya Veterinarian","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115897824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In spite of such efforts, the pastoralist is getting poorer and the productivity arising from exploitation of his resources is ever dwindling. Honestly, something must be grossly wrong somewhere. Consequently, most development agencies are coming to grips with reality by recognizing that the pastoralist is the expert of his own niche from whom they should learn. The current trend is therefore, to develop pastoralist rather than “to develop the pastoralist”. It is rapidly being recognized that over the centuries indigenous pastorals communities have evolved sophisticated adaptations to specifically cope with the situations of scanty resources available in their environment which is largely harsh and unyielding. Pastroralism is gaining acclaim as an efficient system of utilizing and semi-arid land to enhance food security. Bacteria were isolated in 28.7% of milk samples (181/630) either as a single bacterial organism (92.8%) or mixed bacterial organisms (7.2%). The most prevalent bacterial organisms isolated were Staphylococcus spp. (60.3%) followed by Micrococcus spp (17.7%), Acinetobacter spp (5%), Actinomyces spp (5%) and Streptococcus spp (1.1%). No Coliform or yeasts were isolated from any milk samples. The staphylococcus spp were mainly comprised of coagulase negative staphylococcus (64.3%) and coagulase positive staphylococcus (35.7%), these organisms accounted for 37.5% and 22.7% of the total bacterial isolates respectively. The isolation of bacteria in the apparently normal caprine milk, some of which are important in clinical and subclinical mastitis (especially staphylococcus spp) means that particular attention should be given to the management of these diary goat flocks in order to avoid cases of clinical mastitis.
