On its dorsal aspect was a smaller mass measuring 2 cm. in diameter. The growth was surgically excised, the tissues fixed in 10 % formalin and submitted for histopathological characterization. The histopathological findings of increased number of hair follicles and increased numbers of keratinized cells were consistent with a trichoepithelioma. The cow was subsequently euthanized due to regrowth of the tumor and sent for postmortem examination. This report describes the clinical, necropsy and histopathological characteristics of this rare type of tumor in cattle.","PeriodicalId":448931,"journal":{"name":"The Kenya Veterinarian","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116249035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was deemed that the information generated would help to understand the farmersf awareness of the extent of tsetse and trypanosomosis and other diseases within and around Kiboko ranch. Over 500 head of cattle belonging to KARI and surrounding small scale farms were screened for parasites . tick-borne, trypanosomes, helminths and ticks. The farmers who presented their animals were interviewed to generate the socio-economic data. Biconical traps deployed were baited with acetone and 8.4.1.phenol sachets. A total of 21 tsetse flies (6 in June and 15 in August) were caught. Veterinary records from the area indicated the commonest diseases to be anaplasmosis, trypanosomosis and non-specific pneumonia in cattle. The overall trypanosome point prevalence in phase I and II were 3.9% and 0 respectively. On a four-point scale stratification the abundance of tick infestation in Kiboko was clean to low (Clean = 0; low . 20) with the overall tick infestation prevalence of 28.2%. Results on helminth-faecal egg count ranged from 0 . 4000 epgs with a mean 74.64. Skin diseases, trypanosomosis and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) were mentioned by the respondents as the most important livestock diseases in proportions of 61%, 50% and 36%, respectively. From this investigation, despite livestock playing a key role in the economy of farmers around Kiboko ranch, their knowledge of livestock diseases and their management was found to be low. In conclusion, trypanosomosis and TBDs as well as their vectors are still constraints to livestock production.","PeriodicalId":448931,"journal":{"name":"The Kenya Veterinarian","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121671164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 986 serum samples were collected and analyzed from farms in Molo, (where no outbreaks has ever been previously reported), Naivasha, (an RVF-endemic area and where the first case of RVF was reported in Kenya), Kajiado, (where there had been reports of an RVF-like disease) and Shompole, (a chief transmigratory livestock-route and market on the Kenya/Tanzania border). Of the total sera tested, 16.9% (164/966), 8.4% (81/966) and 4.1% (39/966) were found to be positive by IgG-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), IgM-capture ELISA and serum neutralization (SN) tests respectively. On average, the percentages of sera testing positive for antibodies from sedentary farm herds (Molo, Nakuru and Naivasha) were higher than those from the free-range herds (Kajiado, Namanga, Magadi and Shompole). Although no IgM antibodies were detected in sera from Molo, a significant percentage of the sera showed presence of IgG antibodies. This study also confirms that the RVF-like disease that had been informally reported in the pastoralist areas of Namanga and Kajiado was actually RVF.","PeriodicalId":448931,"journal":{"name":"The Kenya Veterinarian","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125528707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This investigation was conducted to study the inhibitory effect of some spice extracts namely onion and garlic commonly used in food industry on the growth of these pathogens. Two different concentrations (1 and 4%) of the spice extracts were used on food model (minced meat) stored at 5oC for 14 days. The results revealed that concentration of 1% of onion extract was less inhibitory than 4%. However, with garlic extract, high inhibitory was observed for the two concentrations. Staphylococcus aureus showed less sensitivity towards onion extract inhibition, however, the three tested pathogenic microorganisms were significantly inhibited by garlic extract. The study demonstrates that onion and garlic extracts can be used as natural antimicrobial agents by incorporating them in food products.","PeriodicalId":448931,"journal":{"name":"The Kenya Veterinarian","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131930256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 6548 bitches had been presented with reproductive problems. The cases were categorically grouped according to the type of infertility diagnosed. Non-infectious infertilities were sixty nine percent and infectious types were thirty one percent. Only two percent of the latter were confirmed in one clinic. 23.20 % of non-infectious infertility were managerial, 29.1% anatomical and 7.80% physiological types while 39.80 % were unclassified miscellaneous cases. The cases classified under infectious infertility consisted of; vaginitis/endometritis/metritis (36.3%), pyometra (25.3%), abortions (21.5%), vaginal discharges (11.7%) and miscarriages (5.1%). The incidence of infertilities was highly common in breeds of German shepherd (39%), Doberman (6%), Rottweiler (12%) and their crosses (43%). The percentage of the reproductive cases presented in both clinics had no statistical difference at (p<0.05). It was evident from the results of this study that infectious infertility exists among the bitches in Kenya and it would be beneficial to do further studies to establish the causative agents to avert any possible outbreaks of zoonotic diseases.","PeriodicalId":448931,"journal":{"name":"The Kenya Veterinarian","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131250553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A questionnaire was designed and administered to assess understanding, poor attributes, good provisions, legislations’, knowledge and sources of general information on animal welfare. The percentage responses to the questions before and after the customized lecture series were determined and differences compared using a paired t test. The level of awareness of animal welfare issues among students before and after the customized lectures was 33.11% and 68.03% respectively. Significant differences at p ≤ 0.05 on all the attributes assessed was observed. p=0.0056 on the understanding of animal welfare, p=0.0232 on what constitutes poor animal welfare and p=0.025 on conditions necessary to ensure a state of good animal welfare. A 50% increase in awareness of legislations on  animal welfare was recorded after the lecture series. The major source of information on animal welfare was from the lecture series offered. This study confirms that inclusion of the customized lectures on animal welfare in training veterinary students was effective in promoting awareness on animal welfare. Gas chromatographic method (GLC) and ECD and FID was used for analysis of organochlorine and organophosphate residues respectively. Eight organochlorine pesticide residues were detected in the following percentages of the samples:α-BHC-7.3%, β-BHC-5.3%, y-BHC-23.2%, o, p’-DDT- 27.8%, p, p’-DDT-15.8%, p, p’-DDD-0.7%, dieldrin- 20.5% and aldrin-13.2%. None of samples contained quantifiable levels of organophosphate compounds. Most levels of organochlorine residues were below Extraneous Residue Limits (ERL). None of the camel meat samples contained residue levels above the tolerance limits. DDT was found in levels above ERL in 4% of the samples all of which were beef. Samples with the highest levels of DDT were from Nyeri and Nanyuki districts. It was concluded that beef and camel meat analyzed were fit for human consumption.","PeriodicalId":448931,"journal":{"name":"The Kenya Veterinarian","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128978052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The clinical signs associated with its poisoning in ruminants appear within 6 hours of ingestion and are circling, tremors of the hind limbs, tachycardia, bloat, convulsions, coma and death. However, there is no published information on the toxicology of this plant in Kenya. This study documents Nicandra physaloides toxicity in two different zero-grazed dairy cattle herds that were inadvertently fed on Napier grass contaminated with Nicandra physaloides. In addition to the case studies, the toxicity of the aqueous extracts from the different parts of Nicandra physaloides was studied under experimental conditions in mice. The 24 hour median lethal dose (LD50) was determined after intra-peritoneal injection (i.p.) of the aqueous extracts of the plant into white Swiss mice and found to be 1820, 2580 and 3620 mg/kg body weight for the leaves, fruits and whole plant respectively. The clinical signs in mice appeared within 30 minutes of inoculation and included coat, decreased locomotor activity, increased respiratory rate, gasping for air and leaping into the air before collapsing into coma and death. There were similarities in the symptoms of the spontaneous poisoning in cattle and in the experimentally induced poisoning in mice.
