This qualitative study investigated the factors influencing MH-related OT practice in the KSA from psychiatrists' and occupational therapists' perspectives. Data collection was conducted with nine participants including occupational therapists and psychiatrists using semi-structured interviews. Four themes emerged: perceptions about MH-related OT practice; OT’s professional identity in Saudi Arabia; challenges toward implementing OT services in psychiatry; and the promotion of OT services within Saudi MH. The findings suggested that awareness about MH-related OT practice is essential to enhance the profession’s presence within MH field.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"38 1","pages":"296 - 317"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45059440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is however a need for further research in this field to gain an insight into techniques used by occupational therapists to develop and maintain this all-important relationship. This study uses thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews to explore mental health occupational therapists’ understanding of the therapeutic relationship. Three themes were identified: (i) the importance of positive engagement, (ii) specific strategies and techniques used to initiate this relationship and (iii) maintaining boundaries. The study further indicated that the development of therapeutic rapport takes time and opportunities for therapists to engage with service users in seemingly “non-directed” activities should be valued and retained.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"38 1","pages":"347 - 363"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42402883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This descriptive needs assessment was conducted using survey design that addressed mental health, disability, medical, and social environmental needs of 127 adoptive families with minor children. Results indicate that mental health concerns among adopted children and adolescents are common and complex, and that parental stress and need for post-adoption support is high. Occupational therapists working with adoptive families should consider family-centered care, assess mental health, and consider contextual factors.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"38 1","pages":"215 - 235"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48485086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students exposed to school shootings often develop emotional disturbances negatively impacting the student’s meaningful participation in daily activities. Occupational therapists are well positioned to address the needs of these students, yet little is known about occupational therapists’ perceived self-efficacy as practitioners who may be called upon to address the unique needs of children who are exposed to school shootings. This phenomenological study explored the self-efficacy of occupational therapists who may encounter students exposed to a school shooting.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"38 1","pages":"195 - 210"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48521496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodology: Photovoice was employed through photographs, interviews, and focus groups. Results: Analysis revealed that FSSM/V experience both supports and poses barriers to their academic success, including challenges associated with balancing role demands, experiences of stress necessitating coping strategies, social disconnection from traditional undergraduates, and positive experiences of support from FSSM/V peers. Limitations included a relatively small sample size that was lacking in diversity. It was concluded that FSSM/V have distinct attributes and experiences that present strengths and needs relative to academic success and wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"38 1","pages":"171 - 194"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47374573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rasch analysis, a psychometric research methodology, is increasingly being used to validate self-report measures, however, the extent of its use within mental health occupational therapy is unknown. To address this, a scoping review that included twenty articles published between 2001 and 2019 was conducted. This review quantifies the increase in use of Rasch analysis in this field and finds heterogeneity in the analysis techniques implemented. As the use of Rasch analysis increases, it offers benefits to strengthen self-report measures within mental health occupational therapy.","PeriodicalId":44781,"journal":{"name":"Occupational Therapy in Mental Health","volume":"38 1","pages":"124 - 150"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47945230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
