It was designed to determine women’s understanding of post-abortion care, the extent to which women use post abortion care services and identify reasons for non-use of post abortion care services among women of reproductive age. A simple sampling technique involving purposive sampling was used to randomly elicit 114 respondents. Data were collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire and analysed using frequency, means, percentages and regression analysis. The result showed that the respondents had an average age of 28years, 2 times deliveries and one abortion/miscarriage done averagely on the 11th-12th week. 50% were married, 43% were single, 91.2% were Christians and 74.6% have attended higher institution. The results showed the respondents had good understanding of post-abortion care. About 63.2% of the women were currently preventing pregnancy by regularly using barrier method e.g., Condom (1st in ranking/usage), Injectable (2nd), Pills (3rd) and Natural method (4th). The results also showed that the health facility’s distance (farness) from home, the cost of obtaining post abortion care services in the health facility, fear that some post abortion care services such as family planning injections can cause infertility, and healthcare providers’ attitude were the reasons for non-use of post-abortion care. The multinomial logistic regression analysis showed a highly significant difference of the effect of education on women’s knowledge of post-abortion care. The result of the multiple regression analysis however, showed no significant difference of the effect of occupation on the use of post-abortion care services. The study recommended that awareness programs on sex education/family planning and post-abortion care among women should be intensified.","PeriodicalId":447385,"journal":{"name":"IPS Journal of Public Health","volume":"204 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141840270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Introduction: The nutritional status of an individual is said to be a measure of the condition of health of an individual as affected or determined by the intake of food and the utilization of nutrients. The nutritional status of an individual should be assessed at regular intervals in order to avert undesirable health problems and complications arising from malnutrition. Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and 100 respondents’ were randomly selected and administered with pretested and validated questionnaire. The blood pressure and anthropometric measurement were taken according to standard procedures. Result The result showed that 33.0% of the Respondents’ had normal BM1, 29.0% were overweight, while 38.0% were obese. The result further revealed that BMI increased with advance in age, as 18.0% and 38.0% of the Respondents’ aged 38- 60years had incidence of overweight and obesity respectively. Blood pressure values also showed a similar trend as Respondents’ aged 38 -60 years had 33.0% of Respondents’ have high blood pressure. Correlation coefficient between BMI and income showed a very high relationship (r= 0.9), which indicates that as income increased, BMI also increased. The relationship between income and blood pressure was poor (r = 0.2). However, exercise and blood pressure had a high correlation (r = 0.7). Similarly, alcohol consumption and blood pressure showed a good relationship (r = 0.6).These findings thus reflect the need for enlightenment of the masses on healthy lifestyles through healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and reduction in alcohol consumption in order to minimize the risk of high blood pressure. Conclusion: The study concluded that most of the people with high blood pressure are those with overweight and obesity; and high earning status and high consumption of alcohol could have serious consequences on health, as alcohol is a lifestyle factor related to high blood pressure.","PeriodicalId":447385,"journal":{"name":"IPS Journal of Public Health","volume":"43 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140414221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to assess the eating habits and nutritional status of adolescents and young adults in tertiary institutions in Port Harcourt metropolis. The study adopted a cross-sectional descriptive design. The population consisted of adolescents and young adults in tertiary institutions in Port Harcourt aged 17-25 years. A multistage sampling technique was used to draw a sample size of 296 respondents from the study. Data were obtained using a three-part questionnaire (socio-demographic profile, eating habits, and anthropometric parameters). The data were statistically analyzed using frequency and percentage and findings were presented on charts and tables. Females constituted 64.86% of respondents with about 83.78% of the respondents within the ages of 21-25. Most students (78.38%) reported taking one meal a day with breakfast being the most skipped meal. Most students (56.76%) eat in the cafeteria and 72.97% ate late. Snacking was common among these students as 75.67% admitted consuming snacks 1-3 times, 3-5 times or more than 5 times weekly. Weekly intake of fish and meat, and fruits and vegetables were high (83.49% and 81.09% respectively). Among the respondents, 20(6.76%) were underweight and 99(33.49%) were obese. About half (147) of the respondents (49.54%) had normal weight while 30(10.21%) were overweight. Frequency of consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, meat and fish intake, fast food consumption, and breakfast skipping were related to nutritional status. Overall, the results revealed that the majority of the students had poor eating habits. This suggests the need to increase nutritional counselling on healthy eating habits in universities and to take appropriate interventions to improve nutritional status among university students.","PeriodicalId":447385,"journal":{"name":"IPS Journal of Public Health","volume":"14 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140438732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application of green nanoparticles in water treatment is one of the promising ways of eradicating these pollutants and providing safe and quality water for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes. Our research was intended to evaluate the decontamination and disinfecting potentials of C. papaya silver nanoparticles on water and wastewater samples. The green silver nanoparticles were formed using aqueous C. papaya leaf extract and characterized using standard nanotechnological techniques while decontamination and disinfecting potentials of the green silver nanoparticles were examined through physicochemical, heavy metal and bacteriological analysis. The results revealed the spectral and morphological profiles were in conformity with the characteristics of silver nanocrystals. There were significant reductions (P < 0.05) in physicochemical, heavy metal and bacterial qualities of the four water samples at higher (0.5 mg/L) and lower (0.25 mg/L) doses of the green silver nanoparticles and their decontamination and disinfection efficiencies were comparable to the positive control calcium hypochlorite. These findings suggest that C. papaya silver nanoparticles could be exploited in restoring the quality of water and wastewater.","PeriodicalId":447385,"journal":{"name":"IPS Journal of Public Health","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132245157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of intermittent and severe starvation on some female reproductive hormones in female albino Wistar rats. Methods: Thirty adult female albino rats weighing 160-180g were randomly subdivided into three groups-A, B and C. Group A serves as control and was fed with rat chow and water. Group B were subjected to intermittent starvation of food, each rat was fed 1g of feed and 2mls of water daily for 7 days. Group C was subjected to severe starvation of food, each rat fed with 1g of feed and 2mls of water daily for 14 days. The animals were sacrificed at the end experiment and blood samples were collected through cardiac punctures and stored in sterile plain containers. Serum FSH, LH, progesterone and estrogen were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassays for each group of rats. Results: The mean levels of FSH, LH, progesterone and estrogen were significantly lower in acutely and chronically starved rats (5.96± 0.32; 4.01 ± 0.29 vs 6.40 ± 0.64) when compared with the control (p <0.005). The mean levels of all the assayed hormones in chronically starved rats (group C) were found to be significantly reduced when compared with the acutely starved rats (group B) (p <0.005). This study indicated that starvation may result in decreased release of FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone.","PeriodicalId":447385,"journal":{"name":"IPS Journal of Public Health","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133001047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
