Managing the risks associated with investments in IT represents an important, but understudied, aspect of the IT planning process. Recognizing that individual projects carry different levels of risk, it has been suggested that managers adopt a portfolio approach toward investments in IT. Under such an approach, individual projects would be evaluated not just on their own merits but on the basis of their contribution to the overall risk of an organization's IT project portfolio. While the portfolio approach has intuitive appeal, it has been criticized for failing to provide a more direct linkage between the concepts of risk and return. In this paper, we draw upon financial portfolio theory to extend and explore the concept of a portfolio approach to managing IT project risk. In particular, we present a model that assesses an individual project in terms of its contribution to the overall risk of the IT project portfolio. The properties of the model are then examined using a simple two-project portfolio. A simulation using the model illustrates how an IT manager can take maximal advantage of the effect of diversification by selecting projects that are negatively correlated. Although long recognized as an important variable, time pressure has received little attention from information systems researchers. This research empirically tested the effects of presentation format, time pressure, and task complexity on decision performance. The objective was to determine the effective presentation format graphics or tables for the performance of tasks of varying complexities by decision makers under time pressure. Results showed that when time pressure was low, the effectiveness of the two presentation formats depended on the type and complexity of the task. With increasing time pressure graphics generally were found more advantageous. To continue to effectively deliver systems and services that IS customers perceive valuable, IS management must become expert in determining and assessing IS customers' expectations and perceptions. One important source of guidance in such a market-driven environment is to look to the service marketing and operations literature for frameworks that may permit IS to more effectively determine and convey customer value of IS services and IT. This paper outlines IS service quality improvement as a means to cope with this customer-driven IS environment. Specifically, it adapts a widely accepted conceptual \"gap\" model from the marketing field as a framework for IS service quality management. This model has as its premise that service quality improvement is a continual process of determining and comparing customer expectations and perceptions and, then, modifying products and services based on the results of this assessment. In the middle of this evolving complexity is the person who has the greatest responsibility for computer use in the firm-the chief information officer, or CIO. The 1980s saw an ascension in the CIO's status within the firm, reaching a position of parity with vice presidents of other functional areas. The 1990s, however, are seeing indications that the CIO's responsibility is eroding. Firms are beginning to pursue strategies that disburse more and more of their information resources throughout the organizational units, and give information processing responsibilities to outsourcers. If firms are to engage in strategic planning for their information resources and engage in information resources management, there must be a clear understanding of the forces that influence computer use and the role of the CIO in managing these forces. As a means of achieving such an understanding, the author explores the possible application of systems theory. In some organizations, e-mail users are being overwhelmed with a barrage of useless messages or \"electronic junk\" mail. This interferes with a user's information processing capability and causes a negative effect on usefulness of this communication tool. This paper addresses the issue of time management by reducing information overload in email. A knowledge-based agent, called AIMS, was developed to prioritize e-mail messages. These requirements include increased modifiability and flexibility as well as support for process and agent models. We claim that they can only be addressed by developing more powerful representation and modeling techniques. As a possible basis for modeling various techniques, we outline a general information architecture for a future CASE environment. These systems offer many benefits but also require substantial long term capital investment. Traditional cost accounting and capital budgeting techniques fail to fully justify installation of these systems. A substantial quantity of literature in this field is reviewed to come up with the existing state of affairs in manufacturing automation and economic justification of flexible manufacturing systems. Economic justification of flexible manufacturing systems on broader basis than provided by traditional methods appears to be not only desirable but also imperative for manufacturing firms going in for them. Based on literature review, some guidelines have been culled for managers to enable them to invest in these systems on a more rational basis and with more confidence.
