A multi-zonal MVDC architecture has been identified by the US Navy as one of the possible architectures for the shipboard power distribution. Selection of a particular architecture for the shipboard power system will require extensive studies to be carried out with respect to various protection, control and stability issues. This paper presents the findings of small signal stability studies carried out on a zonal MVAC as well as a MVDC architecture for the ship board power distribution system.","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116592783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system, named Naval Package (NP), is part of a demonstrative programme commissioned by Italian Navy for preliminary evaluations of Medium-Voltage DC (MVDC) supply technologies aimed at equipping her future vessels. The NP is made by a dual-star alternator, whose two stator three-phase windings respectively feed two diode-rectifier full-bridges. The alternator (rated speed 6300 rpm) is designed to be moved by a 22000 rpm gas turbine through a gearbox. This paper will present NP innovative issues, with reference to design solutions, operative requirements, dynamic modeling under normal and faulty conditions and some factory tests.","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132440540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The high power, rapid transients, and harsh environment expected to be imposed on both the electrical and thermal systems may well be unique to this class of ship. In order to develop the thermal analysis, a comprehensive visualization tool to display the temperature and heat dissipation distributions in the entire ship has been developed. This tool includes a simplified physical model, which combines principles of classical thermodynamics and heat transfer, resulting in a system of three-dimensional differential equations which are discretized in space using a three-dimensional cell centered finite volume scheme. Therefore, the combination of the proposed simplified physical model with the adopted finite volume scheme for the numerical discretization of the differential equations is called a volume element model (VEM). In this work, a 3D simulation is performed in order to determine the temperature distribution inside the ship for six different operating conditions. Visit visualization tool is used to plot the results.","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115486802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The utilization of fault current limiters (FCLs) in power system provides an effective way to suppress fault currents and results in considerable saving in the investment of high capacity circuit breakers. To enhance system security and improve protection system design in electric ships, an active FCL is proposed in this paper to suppress fault currents. A formula to determine smallest active FCL impedance required for fault current reduction under circuit breakers' interrupting ratings is derived by using an impedance matrix modify method. Performance of the proposed method is ensured using a practical electric ship power system. Effect of the locations for FCL installation on fault currents is also illustrated.","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"27 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120907519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without a circulating path, a zero-sequence current generally does not exist in a single power converter; however, it typically exists in parallel-connected three-phase power converters. The presence of zero-sequence currents in three-phase systems, which may be caused by the circuit asymmetry, introduces further asymmetry of electrical variables and is indicative of abnormal condition of the circuit in which these components are found. This paper presents a detailed small-signal mathematical model that can represent the zero-sequence current dynamics in the parallel-connected voltage source converters and investigates the effects of a variety of factors on the zero-sequence currents. Time-domain simulation studies are performed to verify the controller performance and the effects of the system and controller parameter variations on the zero-sequence currents.","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122226481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inverter topology most suited for the expansion of the hybrid electric drive is the VSI inverter because this topology allows a DC/DC converter to control the power flow between the battery and the DC-bus of the propulsion motor. Different battery technologies are discussed by comparing the specifications of a 1 MWh reference battery. The impact of the addition of the batteries on the propulsion system is discussed. The battery allows the diesel generators to operate closer to their optimal efficiency by charging the battery when load is below optimal and by discharging the battery when load is above optimal. During anchoring, harbour docking, maneuvering and low speed cruising, the required power drops significantly and battery can take over from the diesel generators. The limited all-electric range allows the ship to shut off its engines some tens of km away from the harbour, improving local air quality. A large capacity battery can also improve safety by offering a few hours of all-electric low-speed cruising. In naval applications the all-electric range improves the stealth capabilities of the ship by reducing its acoustic and thermal signature. In the CODLAG configuration top speeds can be achieved with less prime movers by installing larger electric motors that are fed from both normal generators as well as the battery.","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131797925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With a lack of benchmark systems, the need to understand failures and their effects is vital for efficient fault identification, location and accommodation. For this, accurate fault diagnosis that could help better-informed decision making will be required. Thus, it is imperative that research be conducted that enables risk mitigation aboard the notional warship. The aims of the research presented in this paper are to understand basic failure causes and effects, to aid the development of a shipboard automated diagnostic system, through failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129099072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simulation of the full circuit models shows that the planar IGBT module excels the wire-bonded IGBT module in the current sharing capability. The gate inductances and resistances are found to be 60% less in the planar interconnect module than in the wire-bonded module. As a result, the power module with planar interconnects yields faster response, which decreases the switching energy imbalance caused by the time lags. The variation of the threshold voltages has a significant effect on the switching energy distribution among the devices. The IGBT with lower threshold voltage tends to be turned on earlier and turned off later than the IGBT with higher threshold voltage. Therefore, a substantial amount of current will travel through the IGBT with lower threshold voltage during switching transient. The continuous operation of the power modules leads to junction temperature imbalance on the IGBTs. The thermal imbalance can further cause imbalance of energy dissipation. Simulation shows that the planar module layout can decrease the impact of layout impedances, thermal imbalance, and process variations.","PeriodicalId":446953,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132120815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
