The aim of the study is to determine if any relationship exist between blood glucose level and basal metabolic index. The subjects were randomly selected among the population and those who met the inclusion criteria were recruited and used for the study. They were apparently healthy subjects with no known history of a metabolic or any other form of chronic diseases. The sample size included a total of 168 subjects [108 males and 60 females] aged between 18 to 55 years. Clinical history and clinical examination methods were employed for sample/data collection. The height (m) and weight (kg) were measured using a stadiometer. The basal metabolic index (BMI) was calculated using the formula: (weight (kg) / height (m2). Random blood glucose (mg/dl) was obtained using a glucometer. The Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS version 21.0) was used for the analysis. The significance of differences between and among group means was tested using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple group means were compared using the post hoc test. To determine the link between variables, Pearson correlation analysis was used. Statistical significance was defined as a P- value of less than 0.05. In females, there was non-significant very low positive correlation between the blood glucose and the BMI. In addition, the mean level of glucose in blood for the different BMI categories did not show any significant difference when compared to normal BMI. In males, the mean blood glucose levels for all groups including overweight and obesed were not statistically significant when compared to the normal BMI. A Pearson correlation between blood glucose level and BMI indicated a non-significant markedly low positive correlation. In conclusion, it was discovered that there was a positive correlation between BMI and blood glucose levels in adult males and females in this study.","PeriodicalId":446681,"journal":{"name":"EAS Journal of Medicine and Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128799736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The diagnosis is essentially clinical, the interrogation must always seek the notion of trauma in the history. Digital rectal examination is painful when mobilizing the coccyx. Standard X-rays, dynamic X-rays, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are quite important for both positive diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Therapeutic management is multidisciplinary, starting with hygiene measures, medical treatment and manipulation and massage techniques. Coccygectomy is proposed after failure of conservative treatments. Its results are generally good. Its main complication is infection.","PeriodicalId":446681,"journal":{"name":"EAS Journal of Medicine and Surgery","volume":"232 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120880150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 24 male Wistar rats were used in the study. They were divided into four groups of six (6) rats each. Group 1 functioned as the control group and received distilled water while Groups 2, 3 and 4 received 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 800mg/kg extract of Eugenia uniflora respectively. The administration was done orally once daily for 30 days. At the end, the rats were sacrificed under light chloroform anaesthesia and their blood collected for analysis of haematological parameters. Data was analysed using SPSS version 23 (SPSS incorporated, Chicago, Illinois, USA). Results are expressed as mean±standard error of mean (SEM). Significant differences were determined by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The differences in values were considered to be statistically significant at p<0.05. The packed cell volume (PCV) decreased significantly in some test groups when compared to control. The RBC count and Hb concentration also decreased significantly. There was a significant increase in white blood cell count amd neutrophils but reductions in lymphocytes and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. Result of the study has shown that the hydromethanolic extract of Eugenia uniflora may possess anti-erythropoietic actions because of the significant reductions in RBC count and Hb concentration as well as leucopoetic and possibly immunomodulatory actions which boosted white blood cell (WBC) production.","PeriodicalId":446681,"journal":{"name":"EAS Journal of Medicine and Surgery","volume":"362 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122824005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surface burns usually receive conservative treatment due to their re-epithelizing potential. Regenerative therapies with platelet concentrate are used as physiological reservoirs of growth factors and proteins, capable of accelerating tissue regeneration. A quasi-experimental study was conducted, with two groups of 30 patients to determine the clinical effect of Lysate Platelet on tissue regeneration in patients with deep dermal burns. Differences were identified between the use of conventional treatment with Silver Sulfadiazine and Lysate Platelet, as well as determining the final outcome of both treatments, in the Plastic Surgery and Cosmetology Service, of the General Clinical-Surgical Hospital \"Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso\" of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba in the period from February 2013 to February 2014. Percentages and totals were calculated as a summary measure for qualitative variables for statistical analysis of the data. For quantitative variables, the calculation of the average and the standard deviation was performed. The female sex prevailed at ages 18 to 45, with the lower limbs highlighting as the most affected region, in both treatment groups. The application of lysate platelet favored healing and epithelialization in a shorter time than conventional treatment with silver sulfadiazine, with minimal adverse events, without complications, achieving a better quality of the final scar and excellent satisfaction level perceived by the burnt patient.","PeriodicalId":446681,"journal":{"name":"EAS Journal of Medicine and Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129618053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are classically seen as deposits on the anterior lens capsule as dandruff-like white powdery residue. The material deposits in all anterior segment structures including iris, pupillary margins, ciliary body, corneal endothelium, zonules and anterior capsule of lens. In the eye, these deposits cause deviancy from normal structure and function, resulting in poor pupil dilatation, zonular weakness, changes in corneal endothelium, secondary glaucoma and nuclear cataract formation. These changes caused in the eye due to Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome can be a challenge for a surgeon doing routine cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation in such patients, as these manifestations of PEX can prove to be obstacles during the surgery and cause post operative complications. The surgeon also has to keep in mind associated secondary glaucoma during management of such a case. Thus visual outcome could be compromised.","PeriodicalId":446681,"journal":{"name":"EAS Journal of Medicine and Surgery","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116346232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of this study was to use the Modified Harris hip score to assess the clinical and functional outcomes following total hip replacement. Methods: The research comprised patients who were admitted to our ward for THR between June 1st, 2021 and May 1st, 2022. All patients had a thorough medical history and physical examination. The Modified HHS was used to score the patients. Details from the pre-operative and post-operative periods were recorded. Results: In this research, we investigated at 28 hip joints. Preoperatively, the average modified HHS was 27, rising to 59 at six weeks and 85 at six months. The difference between before and after scores was statistically significant. Modified HHS performed well in individuals who began partial and full weight bearing early. Conclusions: Post-operatively, patients who had early partial and complete weight bearing reported good modified HHS. For measuring patients' post-THR functional status, we propose using a modified HHS.","PeriodicalId":446681,"journal":{"name":"EAS Journal of Medicine and Surgery","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128427144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
