The position of frenulum and the width of the attached gingiva begin to stabilise, but early abnormalities may contribute to disorders in normal structure and aesthetics. Mandibular incisor gingival recessions occurring in children during this period are not uncommon. Despite the possibility of spontaneous reversal with the development of the stomatognathic system, some patients require surgical treatment. Rapid intervention is necessary to prevent periodontal abnormalities from becoming permanent and to avoid greater destruction. We describe 2 cases of young patients undergoing vestibuloplasty by the Kazanjian technique. The choice of this approach was based on the surgical protocol, which could be used in a relatively cooperative patient. Surgical procedures in children must be rapid and generate predictable and safe treatment outcomes. It is also important that convalescence after the procedure does not limit patient’s functioning and requires no extreme care from the patient. The effects are fully satisfactory in terms of both aesthetics and health.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116678269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Periodontitis is a condition of tooth supporting structures, which are responsible for normal dental morphology and function. Bacterial biofilm formation in the presence of local risk factors plays a fundamental role in the development of periodontitis. Early and accurate detection of risk factors which promote dental plaque accumulation is the basis of treatment and prophylaxis. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess overhanging dental restorations and their impact on the maxillary alveolar process margin and the alveolar mandible based on panoramic radiography. Furthermore, the correlation between the type of restoration and the magnitude of bone loss was analysed. Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of 200 panoramic radiographs showing restorations in permanent dentition was performed using the Planmeca Romexis Viewer software. Further analysis included 113 radiographs with the presence of a homologous tooth on the opposite side of the dental arch. In the study, we analysed the following variables: age, gender, the bone level, occlusal contact points between the opposite teeth and the condition of the tooth adjacent to overhanging dental restoration. We also assessed the type of incorrect dental restoration according to G.V. Black classification. The obtained data was analysed statistically, with p < 0.005 considered statistically significant. The study was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the Medical University of Warsaw (approval no. KB/115/A/2012). Results. We obtained data on the prevalence and magnitude of overhanging dental restorations, the type of restoration and the coexisting bone lesion. The largest size of the overhanging dental restoration was associated with Class II (according to G. V. Black) mesio-occlusal-distal cavities (1.15 mm; p < 0.03), whereas the smallest ones were observed for occlusal-distal cavities (0.91 mm; p < 0.001). The Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient between mesio-occlusal-distal cavities and radiographically measured size of bone lesions was positive (R = 0.51; p = 0.03). Conclusions. The conducted study revealed a significant positive correlation between the mean size of overhangs and radiographically measured size of bone loss. Adjunctive radiology is an important aid in the detection of risk factors for periodontitis.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"367 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125622574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pregnancy is a special period in the life of a woman, when she cares not only for her own health, but also for that of her unborn child. Prenatal care is defined as comprehensive and multidisciplinary care provided to a pregnant woman, developing foetus, and then a newborn. The aim of caries prevention in pregnancy is not only to protect the future mother from caries, but also to prevent the disease in the child. Aim. The aim of the paper was to present the recommendations on preventive and therapeutic dental management in pregnant women with regard to oral diseases in the mother and her child. Material and methods. Electronic search for literature in medical databases (Pubmed, EMBASE, MEDLINE) and manual search for literature on primary-primary prevention of dental caries and dental care in pregnancy. Results. The available literature indicates the safety of preventive and therapeutic activities during pregnancy, including the use of local anaesthesia and dental diagnostic radiology. Although dental treatment requires some modifications due to pregnancy-related changes, it may be safely used for the benefit of the mother’s and the child’s health. Conclusions. Dental care in pregnancy should be primarily dedicated to education, prevention and treatment, if needed. Future mothers should be made aware that the child’s oral health can and should be taken care of already in the prenatal period.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128364800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vast indications for use of the polymer resins in cavity reconstruction result from a progress in manufacturing process. A new group of cross-infection control restoratives provide sterility of the treatment together with fulfillment of both the patients and the dentists requirements. A disposable packaging enables usage of the material’s portion to restore a single lesion and prevents its further re-use. Aim. The aim of the study was to compare clinical features, such as application, modelling, polishing and esthetics, of a restorative material packed in blisters to other polymer restorative materials. Material and methods. A survey study was conducted among 56 students of dentistry. They were given a blister of the material and asked to use it for restoration of a chosen cavity. Afterwards, they were asked to fill in a questionnaire concerning the clinical work with the material. All returned data was analyzed with chi-square test at p < 0.05. Results. The overall responsive rate was 44.6%. Taking the material from the blister was comfortable for 84%. The material’s application in the cavity was estimated well by 92% of the respondents. 72% believed its application and polishing was significantly easier than the other materials. 72% of the students claimed the material was more esthetic than the other restoratives. Conclusions. The restorative material packed in blisters is comfortable to apply in the cavity, can be easily modelled and polished. Blisters are comfortable to use by the dentist and the assistant. Due to high esthetics, it is dedicated for esthetic restorations.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125284116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The difference in the trauma pattern favoring luxation rather than fracture has been found to be typical for the primary dentition, since the elasticity of the alveolar bone surrounding the primary teeth is high and primary tooth held in alveolar socket is less strong. Incidence of foot fractures increases at the age of 3-4 years where physiologic root resorption has begun, thereweakening the root. Traumatic injuries to the primary dentition present special problems and the management is often different as compared with the permanent dentition. Because of potential sequelae of trauma to primary teeth, a treatment method that minimizes any additional risks of further damage to the permanent successors should be selected. The report presents a case of 3.5 year-old boy after traumatic injury – extrusion of tooth 51, which required surgical treatment, and apical third horizontal root fracture of tooth 61 treated conservatively. Written consent from subject’s parents/subject’s legal guardians was obtained. Root-fractured primary tooth has been followed clinically and radiographically for 3.5 year, till advanced root resorption. Presented case and cases described in cited literature demonstrate that conservative treatment of root-fractured primary teeth is a favorable method of the treatment that allows the teeth to function naturally until the term of physiological resorption and exfoliation.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114203298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tooth injuries constitute a serious clinical problem in contemporary paediatric dentistry. Immediately delivered and correct first aid is particularly important in the case of dental trauma. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the general knowledge of teachers and medical professionals on providing first aid to children in the case of dental trauma. Taking part in a first aid training course was also analysed. Material and methods. An anonymous, voluntary questionnaire was administered to 727 people. It was conducted in January and February 2017 in three Polish provinces. The respondents were divided into groups depending on their age, sex, educational level, number of children and profession related to medicine or school education. Behavioural patterns were analysed in the event of a complete tooth dislocation or crown fracture. Results. According to the study, 577 respondents (79.4%) have participated in a first aid training course at least once. Every third person: 223 (32%) has been a witness of a tooth injury. The most frequent type of encountered trauma was soft tissue injury and tooth crown fracture: 114 (35%) and 96 (29%) cases, respectively. The professionals who tried to provide first aid in dental trauma at a similar percentage were teachers: 56% of cases and people associated with medicine: 53%; the remaining professionals did so in 36% of cases. Conclusions. The issue of first aid in dental trauma is rarely raised during first aid training courses. Despite this, every second person participating in the study has tried to provide first aid. However, their actions were incorrect in most cases.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122148317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prosthetic reconstruction of these teeth should strengthen the remaining structure and ensure the long-term effect of the treatment. An endocrown is a monolithic restoration, which use adhesion and mechanical retention. Most often, it is used during the reconstruction of the non-vital molars. It is debatable whether the premolars due to its structure should be rebuilt without the use of post. An endocrown is also used in reconstruction of teeth with low crowns and with short, obliterated root canals. The main advantages of it are a simple procedure, shorter treatment protocol compared to the classic reconstruction, lower costs, satisfactory aesthetics, reduction of stress, minimal invasive preparation or a smaller number of complications. Most frequently mentioned drawbacks are the possibility of fracture of the tooth and debonding of reconstruction. Most commonly used materials in performing endocrowns are composite and glass ceramics. According to the advantages and clinical trials, endocrowns seem to be a good alternative to the classic restorations after endodontic treatment using posts and crowns.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"305 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123193669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The introduction of self-adhesive materials in dentistry has significantly reduced the duration of filling carious cavities. This group includes a light-curing, semi-liquid composite material from Kerr, called Vertise Flow. Aim. The aim of the study was clinical evaluation of restorations made using Vertise Flow in class I cavities in permanent teeth. Material and methods. In children aged 8-17 years, 154 cavities were filled with Vertise Flow. After 2 years, 49 fillings were clinically evaluated according to the modified Ryge’s criteria. The anatomical shape, colour, smoothness, marginal integrity of restorations and the evidence of secondary caries were assessed. Parents or legal guardians of the children consented to the medical procedures. Results. All the evaluated restorations were found retained, with acceptable anatomical shape and smoothness. One restoration slightly changed the colour, and unacceptable marginal integrity was seen in 2 cases. Secondary caries involved 2 teeth. Conclusions. In this 2-year observation, Vertise Flow meets the requirements for materials used for filling minimally prepared class I carious cavities in permanent teeth of young patients.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114206452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lack of sufficient closure of the perforation may result in the failure of the treatment. A material dedicated for the closure of the perforation is the MTA (Mineral Trioxide Aggregate) cement. The study presented herein shows a case of an old pulpal floor perforation in the lower left second molar (tooth 37), co-existing with the damage to the periodontal tissues, omitted mesiolingual canal and the inflammation in the periapical area. An initial cone beam computed tomography analysis helped to plan the retreatment and determine the prognosis. Written consent from the Patient was obtained. The endodontic retreatment, including the disinfection and closure of the perforation with the MTA, was successful. The control radiographs and clinical assessments after 4 months and 3 years showed complete regeneration of inflammatory lesions and new bone structure in the furcal area. The MTA cement is effective in closing old pulpal floor perforations and allows for the regeneration of the lost bone in the furcal area.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124874285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aetiology may vary, but usually it does not determine the choice of treatment method. The current concept of avulsed permanent teeth is based entirely on the decision on the expediency of tooth replantation and its possibly swift performance, as long as there are indications for it. This is aimed at maintaining the tooth in the oral cavity for as long as possible, or as long as it takes to start the further stages of the treatment. It is important to determine the exact time of injury and to establish whether any first-aid operations in the mouth were performed and what they were. The course of action in the dental office depends on the time the tooth spent outside the socket, its maturity and the environment in which the tooth was stored. The role of the dental practitioner, in addition to the professional treatment of the injuries which have already occurred, consists in the prevention, education and the promotion of appropriate attitudes in the patients. In complete avulsion, the prognosis is strictly dependent on these factors and the occurrence of complications is often associated with late treatment initiation or lack of knowledge among the persons present at the injury with respect to the way in which an avulsed tooth should be handled. In order to promote the appropriate behaviour in the society, the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) provides recommendations for patients concerning trauma to the teeth via its website, posters and a mobile application.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127182836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
