In this paper we examine data from eight purpose-built aware homes over a six-month period, looking at presence in rooms to try to determine patterns amongst the older residents. We look for homes that have similar movement patterns using cluster analysis. We also examine how movement over days clusters within individual homes. Our analysis begins to show the possibilities of distinguishing between residents in their homes based on patterns of movement.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121453815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teens with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) have the additional burden of assuming responsibility for disease management. The findings reported in this paper represent the perspective of parents and adolescents who are coping with T1D — uncovering various tensions that interfere with the effective use of technology to manage the disease. Predominant themes from a set of semi-structured interviews are used to construct implications for the design of new technology intended to support families coping with T1D.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129043043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Home assistive technologies were initially developed to support people with special needs and elderly people - and among other things - to help them remain within their homes and communities for as long as is feasible and safe. Our work focuses an the other end of the technology and design spectrum: one where Tele-medicine is used to support optimal palliative care at home, for children at the end of their lives. We present preliminary results of a pilot study. We argue that remote care provision should be considered as an integral part of care, to complement and enhance current end of life care - as well as providing advice and support - regardless of where patients reside. We advocate that future developments in assistive living technologies adopt an increasingly holistic \"whole-of-life\" approach, including the too often understudied and under-reported end-of-life phase.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117229325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Combined with European total costs estimated in 2005 at €130 billion. In the absence of a cure for dementia there is a real need to develop pervasive, user-centered technologies to enhance the well-being and quality of life of people with dementia. This study explores the use of Microsoft SenseCam images within the principles of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) to engage people with early stage dementia in meaningful discussion. The SenseCam intervention, like the CST approach, is aimed at general enhancement of quality of life and global cognitive and social functioning.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116265175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We compare the conventional doctor's visit with the virtual visit to identify user requirements and needs for the acceptance of such a scenario. In our survey we retrieved data from a total of 93 users between 16 and 67 years. The results of this study describe differences (and similarities) of criteria for choosing a doctor, basic requirements to accept a virtual doctor's visit, and people's opinions on common pro and contra arguments on this scenario. We analyzed the data for potential influences from various user characteristics, such as age, gender, social behavior, or technical competence. Interestingly, most of the reported concerns are not influenced by gender or age, while participants' technical self-confidence is related with various acceptance aspects.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127149999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assisted living services are essential features within a smart home. This paper presents the details of preliminary work in the development of a context-aware assistance system that can be used pervasively within smart homes. We have investigated the issues surrounding the provision of assistance in undertaking activities of daily living within a smart home and have subsequently outlined a framework to address the identified challenges. The work is currently under development and plans have been made for evaluation within a simulated living environment.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125657329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on previously conducted focus groups a questionnaire was developed and quantitative data from N = 104 persons were analyzed. In a descriptive manner opinions of adults in all stages of life (age groups from young, middle-aged to older people) as well as gender - and health-related are presented and discussed with regard to those characteristics, and differences between the groups are disclosed. In multivariate regressions follows the analysis of most predictive security and privacy attributes for the acceptance (i.e. perceived usefulness) of E-health technologies. Results show that both security and privacy aspects play an important role for acceptance and usage of medical assistive technologies.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116511933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To further develop an understanding of the benefits and functionalities that prospective patients deem as either desirable, undesirable, inadequate or in need of further development the study was categorized under 7 main headings: Personal Profile; Benefits; Adoption; Acceptance; Risks; Security, Privacy and Trust; (use of) Cell Phone. This study was completed as part of the European Union BRAVEHEALTH project, aimed at the support of cardiac patients in everyday life using in vivo monitoring and diagnosis, thereby enabling the patient to be more proactive in heath management. Most participants felt that there is a great future for this technology and showed positive response in regards to the potential benefits but are (at present) not willing to adopt the system due to concerns over reliability, like security, privacy and trust.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131617982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is widely believed that exergaming benefits the patient in terms of encouraging adherence and boosting the patient's confidence of correct execution and feedback is essential in achieving these. However, feedback and in particular visual feedback, may also have potential negative effects on the quality of the exercise. We describe in this paper a prototype single-sensor therapeutic exergame that we have developed and provide some preliminary user feedback regarding enjoyment and perceived competence when using the exergame compared to exercising without the exergame. Our results indicate that all participants found exercising with the game more enjoyable. However, additional work is needed to increase participants' confidence in their correct execution of the exercise.","PeriodicalId":444978,"journal":{"name":"2011 5th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth) and Workshops","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131034266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
