A promising biocomposite is polylactic acid (PLA) and empty fruit bunch (EFB). Therefore, the effect of fiber loading on the mechanical and thermal properties of the biocomposite was investigated. The biocomposites were produced with untreated and treated fiber with loadings ranging from 10 weight (wt)% to 50 wt%. The treated EFB fiber was chemically treated with sodium hydroxide followed by silane to increase compatibility with PLA. Fabrication of the biocomposites was done using an internal mixer and preparation of testing specimens using hot press. It was observed that 10 wt% of fiber loading showed optimum mechanical and thermal values of the biocomposites. More than 10 wt% loading decreased the biocomposites properties as fiber agglomeration occurred within the matrix.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129068813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On top of grouping a brilliant portfolio, an excellent portfolio manager will consider the risk of downturn in financial performance as an important event that need to be taken care of at it best. This paper focuses on managing this risk of a well-diversified investment portfolio. The focus is to be narrowed down into finding the assurance value of the risk. This assurance value will be evaluated under specific strategy of buying traded European put option. The most celebrated Black-Scholes model to option pricing will be used in determining the values of these portfolio insurance strategies. General input parameters such as volatility and dividend yields of the portfolio will be taken from the performance of FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FTSEBMKL) as the portfolio is reflected by the performance on the index. The value results will be then viewed as numerical evaluation of some well-diversified portfolio examples, which will vary in term of specific input parameters of certain cases. This study provides straightforward insurance strategies a portfolio manager would have done in managing risk of downturn in the financial market. This strategy structure could be further enhanced by considering various other financial tools that are available or to be made available in the financial world.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"385 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115990090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Western Norway has numerous small- and medium-sized machining enterprises (SMEs), but these lack capacity to collaborate in complex and large-scale projects with the supplying companies for the operators at the oil fields in the North Sea. As a consequence, this decreases the potential for value creation in the region. In this paper we argue that SMEs in particular face a dual challenge of horizontal- and vertical integration to pursue inter-firm collaboration. Qualitative interview data indicate that the SMEs perceive the managing of human resources to be the greatest challenge in this regard. To overcome the lack of collaborative capacity they report that inter-firm agreements should be relatively formalized through some kind of common ownership, such as joint ventures.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116924751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the fact that the Government and various financial institutions in Malaysia are actively offering the financial incentives through many schemes and facilities, it is important to consider whether the SMEs are able to utilize the incentives efficiently to achieve greater competitiveness. This study identified debt ratio defined by total debts over total assets which were used as proxy for loans. Meanwhile, tax incentives granted to SMEs served as a proxy for tax incentives. This study also examined working capital defined by cash conversion cycle which served as a proxy for internal financing. By analyzing the audited financial statements of 1327 firm-years for the period of 2000 until 2010, the statistical results revealed that debts financing would reduce the financial performance of SMEs. The statistical results provided evidence that tax incentives granted could enhance SMEs' financial performance. However, no significant result was found on the relationship between working capital management and financial performance of SMEs. This study could assist the policy makers in evaluating the effectiveness of financial incentives programs for the sustainability and growth of SMEs.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116987598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These materials have rheological properties which can change between fluid and solid continuously, rapidly and reversibly by applying magnetic fields. They are composed of a fluid with low permeability and micron-sized magnetic particles. A performance of MRF used in automotive rubber devices was investigated to prevent the magnetic particles inside the fluid sediment over time and to study the compatibility between the rubber material and the fluid. Sedimentation analysis and ageing analysis were carried out to characterize the stability and the compatibility of the MRF respectively. The results of the sedimentation ratio of the MRF and the tensile properties of rubber immersed in the MRF are presented. Consequently, a usage of the MRF in automotive rubber devices was successfully developed.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117293157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed interaction system, the eye gaze is used to move a rectangular overlay called ‘area of interaction’ (AOI), on a computer screen. The AOI defines the boundary for pointer positioning. Hand fingertip detection is used to position the pointer. The presence of a second hand then triggers a click event. We tested the performance of the method against a standalone hand tracking interaction. Our system of combining the two types of tracking was found to be more accurate and experienced less error than using hand tracking method alone. The system is able to utilize the speed of eye gaze while overcoming its lack of accuracy by switching to hand tracking for more accurate pointing.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115270516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm is based on a variable stepsize variable order block method. The method produces two new approximations in a single integration step. The formulae derivation permits concurrent computation between two processors. The parallel algorithm is implemented by calling the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library. The performance of the sequential and parallel block method is compared with a sequential non-block method. Moreover, the performance of the parallel algorithm is assessed in terms of speedup and efficiency. It is shown from the numerical results that the overall performance of the block method is increased by parallelizing each point in a block.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114638785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

International trade is imperative to the progress of developing countries to induce investments and earn foreign exchange in this liberalized and globalized borderless world. Regression analyses reveal that market size and exchange rate play very important function in the promotion of international trade. Growth in population has significant negative effects on developed nations: Japan and Singapore, but has positive effects on the Philippines. Additionally, inflation rate affects the Philippines and India negatively, while financial market development is only marginally significant on total trade of Singapore and India. Results from the study present policy implications to emerging and developed Asian countries on strategies to facilitate international trade and enhance growth.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114682970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, the emergence of communication technology allows users in distributed locations to share and work interactively on digital media elements such as artifacts, documents, images, graphics and audio-video files. Users who work on the same project will form four communication relationships (one-to-one, one-to-many, one-to-selected users, many-to-many) and they share the same media. Different types of media require different handling mechanisms, especially when dealing with distributed virtual users on heterogeneous platforms. As a result, controlling and coordinating such media becoming more complex. This paper investigates the control and coordinating factors in relation to media sharing based on platform, users, media access, and API. The investigation involves comparative studies based on related research that focus on media sharing in networked collaborative workspaces. Results from this study are significant to support the control and coordination of flexible media sharing for future research.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125356875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
