In managing risk, identification of risk factors is very critical. Hence, this study focused on the investigation of risk factors from contractors' perspective as the contractors are key players in the success of a project. The scope of this study was limited to Batu Pahat and Muar districts only. Data were gathered using structured questionnaire survey from contractors registered with Pusat Khidmat Kontraktor (PKK). Investigations on the risk factor involved 25 common risk factors classified in five categories, which were identified through literature works. Statistical methods were used to analyse the data. Results found that the five most important risk factors in construction project are shortage of material, late deliveries of material, insufficient technology, poor quality of workmanship, and cash flow difficulties. These significant factors are from two major categories of construction and finance. The findings of this study would assist contractors in dealing with risks encountered in construction projects.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"23 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125540788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of chitosan on the formation of HAp coatings were investigated by adding various amount of chitosan ranging from 5 to 20 vol. %. The electrodeposition was carried out at 80 °C for 30 min under constant applied potential at − 1.5 V vs Ag/AgCl. Prior to electrodeposition, the Ti substrates were pre-treated by acid etching to remove oxide and obtain desired roughness surface. The incorporation and intermingling of chitosan in the HAp coatings reduce the amount of space found between the needlelike structures in the pure HAp coatings by ‘filling in' the space. However, excessive amount of chitosan added in the deposition solution (i.e.: 20 vol. %) caused it to compete with calcium ions to incorporate with phosphate ions and dominating the coatings. XRD patterns, FTIR spectra and EDAX analyses confirmed that the presence of chitosan in the HAp coatings. So, considering its economic and simple production, a hybrid HAp/chitosan coating is thought to be an attractive candidate for future applications as biomedical implants material.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126271506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unusual features of road geometries or inconsistencies can result in unsafe driving experience due to carelessness in handling of vehicles. To help minimize the risk of accidents at curve, 85th percentile speed model is needed for Malaysian scenario to ensure its' road consistency. The current technique of identifying design speed is prone to produce inconsistencies in road design. This is because the geometric elements determined from the identified design speed are based on minimum values and although it is recommended to adopt higher values for road construction, no maximum value is set. This type of design guidelines in practice will tend to produce inconsistency in operating speed along the road roadway alignment. With that in mind, this research aims to develop models for the purpose of validating consistencies of urban road specifically horizontal alignment. As for the methodology, several methods were adopted such as spot speed study, VBOX and loop detector. After several analysis were conducted one model with R-Sq value of 74.5% is proposed as a starting basis for Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131238462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Misled reports on similar areas were the motivation for the research project as the need to identify the hard-core poor is crucial for all stakeholders. From the initial input of 100 survey data, demographic indicators were drawn from those living in the rural areas (75%) and urban locations (25%). The findings show that income and education factors consistently fulfill the criteria under economic indicators with 100% earning incomes below RM1500 per month (equivalent to USD483.9). Furthermore, only 65% of the respondents studied up to high school hence, citizens experiencing economic hardship are in existence regardless of location. Reporting the findings of this study is significant for the government to focus on the identification of the type of development programs available to assist the disadvantage communities in Malaysia. By giving them proper training and other entrepreneurial opportunities, the government will eradicate the citizens' dependence on subsidies while ensuring that communities are socially included and not deprived on any national initiatives.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130057690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the main problems with the HE approach is the tendency of the practitioners to reuse HE heuristics without assessing its suitability for the different product domains. The purpose of this research is to report a solution in stepwise heuristic evaluation (SHE) by development of Collaborative Design Measurement System (CDMS). This research identifies requirements to develop a CDMS by deriving Information Architecture (IA) to facilitate the SHE measurement method between tester-designer. Subsequently, this paper presents the development of CDMS and the validation of the developed solution with 30 users. The collaborative aspect of the CDMS arises as the system is targeted for both designers and testers who work in teams towards the design, development and testing phase of the product life cycle. Applying a user-centered analysis (UCA) and user-centered design (UCD) approaches, the user requirements were gathered from interviews (10 subjects), then use case diagram and information architecture (IA) were presented. This is used to develop the CDMS. The developed system was then tested using informal usability testing with 30 subjects. A mixed of positive, neutral and negative feedback were received. The results obtained from the testing revealed that the system is usable at the present state, also future improvements would take place at the next cycle of development.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124073838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All samples were prepared by solution cast technique. The prepared samples were exposed under 70°C for 3 days. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectral analysis show that MG30 with 1 wt.% of 6PPD is the most effective composition to reduce the thermal oxidation at elevated temperature. The comparative studies are performed to investigate the conductivity performance of both systems of MG30-lithium triflate salt before and after treated with 6PPD. The analysis found that the untreated sample shows better ionic conductivity at room temperature. The modulus formalism study confirms both systems are ionic conductor.","PeriodicalId":444674,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132443487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
