In this context, the collaborative translation of The Chinese Classics by James\u0000 Legge (1815–1897) and Wang Tao (1828–1897) was of particular significance because it promoted the transmission of Eastern learning\u0000 to the West in the late Qing dynasty. This process of collaborative translation provided an opportunity for cultural interaction\u0000 between China and the West; at the same time, it also generated competition between the two cultures. This paper sets out to\u0000 investigate the paratexts written by the two co-translators, namely Legge and Wang, and aims to answer the following questions:\u0000 How did the translation process of The Chinese Classics generate a dialectical interaction and why did it create\u0000 a cultural struggle between the two translators? The discussion in the paper focuses on three questions related to subjects\u0000 already raised in the translation literature: What does the word count of any translated text contribute to translation study? How does comparing different translations of the same text into the same language contribute to translation research? Will translating one text into\u0000 genealogically related languages reveal similarities between the translations? The research hypothesizes that (1) similarities and\u0000 differences will be found between the translations, but (2) they will not affect target language rules. The main findings are that\u0000 (1) total word sums were smaller in the translations than word sums in the source text. (2) The differences reflect the style and\u0000 register considerations (formal versus daily lexical and structural elements) rather than grammatical issues.
