Up to this point, the storage and curation of these data sets has been somewhat ad hoc and voluntary. Given recent mandatory stipulations coming from government funding sources regarding the handling of data sets, it is imperative that libraries step into this gap and provision data management services for their institutions. This column aims to explore two primary areas in which libraries can provision services for their parent institutions regarding data management. Design/methodology/approach – The column is exploratory in nature. Practical implications – As academic libraries take the lead in data management services, there are many positive implications for their parent institutions. Organizing and preserving important data sets could have a significant impact on the worldwide research community. Originality/value – All academic libraries, no matter their s...","PeriodicalId":444419,"journal":{"name":"OCLC Syst. Their level of access was then determined in Google Books by observing whether the books had a metadata record, were full‐text searchable, and whether they were available as in snippet, preview, or full‐text views.Findings – Results show that Google Books has a sizable number of metadata records for Hawaiian and Pacific books, but has only a limited number available for full‐text searching. In contrast, a larger number of books from the general stacks were available for full‐text searching.Research limitations/implications – Because of the small sample size, margins of error remain quite large. The field would benefit from a larger size of collection sample.Practical implications – D...","PeriodicalId":444419,"journal":{"name":"OCLC Syst. New technology, despite offering wonderful opportunities, changes quicker than the seasons and frequently fails to perform as well as its hype. The author suggests that we should regard this situation as an exciting challenge, rather than a threat. Integrated solutions are discussed and suggestions made as to how best we can balance the old with the new and a question is posed as to whether we can ever overcome the infrastructural problems posed by the Web.","PeriodicalId":444419,"journal":{"name":"OCLC Syst. There is not enough evidence to prove that such environmental changes will likely obviate the need for systems librarians in the near future. Systems librarians must upgrade their knowledge and skills to meet the new demands of the change.Originality/value – At the time of this literature review, few publications were dedicated to the discussion of cloud computing and systems librarianship. It describes the system requirements that must be supported in order to make it a viable and acceptable solution to all participating libraries. Subsequently, it presents the client‐server Web‐based system architecture, database design and Java development platform that are used to implement the system. The new system exhibits a host of advantages over the manual system including the minimising of human resource by eliminating form‐filling and other forms of paperwork completely, improving the access and speed of the ILL process by allowing participating libraries to update each other’s databases directly, ensuring data integrity, simplifying status tracking and supporting instantaneous status and statistical reporting.","PeriodicalId":444419,"journal":{"name":"OCLC Syst.
