His account of the medieval period unveils numerous ambiguities and tensions. on the one hand, the period affirmed consent as the basis of marriage, thus making the woman an equal partner in agreeing to a marriage; on the other, women were often subject to familial economic concerns. on the one hand, the church denounced spousal abuse and protected women from brutality; on the other, many husbands treated their wives poorly. The point for angenendt, however, is that christianity did affirm the equality the sexes and conceived of marriage as a partnership; the point is that, when given the chance, the christian church did protect women from savage husbands. What angenendt wants his readers to understand is how unusual such a situation is in the history of the world.","PeriodicalId":44384,"journal":{"name":"CATHOLIC HISTORICAL REVIEW","volume":"103 1","pages":"797 - 798"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/cat.2017.0166","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66399527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The eleven articles are focused on the time between the early thirteenth and the seventeenth centuries, primarily in italy but not confined to the birthplace of Francis. The book offers a smorgasbord of information about mendicant theologians and preachers, church leaders, missionaries (in particular William of rubruck’s mission to the Mongols), medieval women, sacred places, and religious objects. We get a significant glimpse of the many aspects that make up the various mendicant cultures of the dominican and Franciscan world of the later Middle ages and beyond.","PeriodicalId":44384,"journal":{"name":"CATHOLIC HISTORICAL REVIEW","volume":"103 1","pages":"800 - 801"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/cat.2017.0168","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66399699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This book contains translations (or better paraphrases) of three (Daxue, Zhong Yong, and Lunyu) of the Sishu, the so-called “Four Books” that constituted the basics for the annual examinations of the Confucian scholars in China. The Latin translations were the fruit of the efforts of several Jesuits in China starting from the pioneers Michele Ruggieri and Matteo Ricci at the end of the sixteenth century up to Inácio da Costa and Prospero Intorcetta until Couplet himself. The purpose of these translations was twofold: the earlier versions served as lectures for newly arrived Jesuits in China to provide them with the necessary vocabulary and ideas for dialogues with Chinese scholars. Later the further purpose was added to create images of the Chinese culture and the Jesuit China mission in Europe.","PeriodicalId":44384,"journal":{"name":"CATHOLIC HISTORICAL REVIEW","volume":"102 1","pages":"843 - 844"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2016-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/cat.2016.0227","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66399254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A generous narrator throughout, Palmer deftly transcends these seemingly insoluble disagreements by offering a third way in the form of a systematic view of how apocalyptic thinking was woven into the fabric of society at all levels as a force for reform and improvement. As a motivational tool for change in the face of inevitable Judgment, apocalyptic discourse functioned differently in different contexts, yet it yielded similar results. The inevitability of Judgment (whether seemingly imminent or not) inspired a desire to improve, not just when times were bad.","PeriodicalId":44384,"journal":{"name":"CATHOLIC HISTORICAL REVIEW","volume":"102 1","pages":"829 - 830"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2016-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/cat.2016.0217","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66399228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
