The story presents an unnamed convict’s efforts to narrate a series of uncanny experiences which culminates in his killing of his wife. Although one might at first assume that a person who awaits the hangman has no reason to lie, this essay argues that the narrative as a whole is an elaborate attempt at misdirection intended to shift the blame for murder away from one unconscious agency onto another which resides in the same psyche. Using psychoanalysis, this essay further seeks to unveil the psychological motives behind such a seemingly futile exercise at a moment when the protagonist waits for his execution.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45169328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although Freud and Jung, as discussed here as well, were initially reluctant in accepting the biological considerations Spielrein was proposing for psychoanalysis, both overcame that reluctance, and her contributions to Freud’s death instinct, Jung’s concept of the anima, an understanding of transference and counter-transference, have come to be acknowledged and thus she is considered to be an early pioneer in the development of psychoanalysis.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42637821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These forces are usually encoded in a cohesive system of interrelated fantasies- many of which develop in early childhood and express the artist's need to pursue a line of exploration that is congruent with his or her preoccupations. Such preoccupations usually begin as unconscious fantasies and may or may not become conscious as the artist develops the theme or formal innovation.I will make the case that a system of interrelated fantasies is encoded in the signature style and masterworks produced by the modernist Alberto Giacometti and the early Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Giacometti's gaunt filiform figures and Artemisia's bloody decapitations and alluring nudes reflect what used to be called their \"central organizing fantasies.\" That term is now outdated and oversimplifies the concept I have in mind. As a clinician as well as a researcher in art history, I have found that most individuals have a wide variety of separate unconscious fantasies that often coalesce into predominating and cohesive motivational forces.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42476500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Restuccia","doi":"10.1353/aim.2022.0013","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/aim.2022.0013","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:Challenging Freud’s contention that the origin of religion is the need for a protective Father (rather than an oceanic feeling of eternity), Augustine’s Confessions (as I read it) indicates that such an oceanic experience generated the concept of original sin, to justify a theological procedure for wending one’s way back to that ecstatic experience, and thereby laid the foundation for Christianity. Lacanian and Kristevan theory in turn facilitates our realization that Christianity springs from a wish for maternal fulfillment, a propensity to cling to the plenitude that occupies the void of das Ding. By illustrating the strong line of Christian thinkers Augustine was up against, Agamben puts into relief the subjectivity operating in Augustine’s formation of Christianity, furthering our ability to grasp the psychosexual underpinnings of the concept of original sin, with its ironic capacity to compel belief in a purity of spiritual oneness. Foucault, in Confessions of the Flesh, also weighs in, through his analysis of City of God and Against Julian that not only underscores Augustine’s obsession with sex but suggests that the consumption of the forbidden fruit might “be understood in a sexual way.” The Christian son/daughter therefore, ideally, fuses with the mother-Church to experience an oceanic state of completeness prior to sexual differentiation, an all-embracing fullness that enables a (Monica-inspired) victory—through evasion—over the Law of the Father, the disease of desire, and its concomitant lack. However, although Augustine held Lacanian theory within his perceptual and conceptual grasp, he veers off personally in a direction Lacan would consider a detour, insofar as Augustine “drown[s] the symptom in meaning,” in mother’s mystical milk, leaving it “repressed.” Yet in doing so, he instigated two-thousand years of Christianity: thanks to Augustine Imaginary maternal protection can be enjoyed through the jouissance of an oceanic feeling, celebrated by dozens of Madonna del Latte paintings.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47562033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This elementary taxonomy is then refined via a re-reading of the way in which blasphemy occurs in Freud’s case-study of the Rat Man, which generates an additional axis, notably that of the ‘object’. It is argued that the various components on the axes of blasphemy do not stand in a one-to-one relationship to one another, but follow a subjective pathway. This idiosyncratic, subjective dialectic of blasphemy is further substantiated with reference to the logic of the obsessional fantasy. Finally, it is concluded that a psychoanalytic approach to the question of blasphemy needs to start from a critique of the relationship between the subject and language, and from the observation that words have the power to heal as much as they have the ability to injure.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41715278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article examines this circumstance as exemplary of a predominant Freud-centred viewpoint that can give rise to considerable distortions concerning what one omits and what one emphasizes in the history of psychoanalysis. The objective here is to analyse these distortions and appraise their implications for historical research in this field. For this purpose, we first review the context in which Freud refers to Low and Spielrein in 1920. Next, we re-examine their respective careers and seek to delineate a broader appraisal, considering their writings and other available sources and scholarship. In conclusion, the methodological issues highlighted by this reassessment are briefly discussed.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49466588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
