Freud's Moses, Schoenberg's Moses, and the Tragic Quest for Purity
Abstract:In this essay, I review some general known parallels between Freud and Schoenberg, and what threads of influence can be discovered. I will briefly describe each of the two Moses works, followed by a summary of previous scholarly comparisons. I conclude with some new speculations about their different portrayals of this ancient biblical figure– and the ways in which their separate accounts reflect the larger preoccupations of each of them in the face of the trauma of Nazi aggression.
