These can bring the analyst to feel intense boredom and frustration. This \"almost unavoidable monotony\" can be interpreted in various ways. It can be seen as an expression of the patient's compulsion to repeat, whether one considers it a product of the death drive, or the need to give meaning to the traumatic experience that caused the perversion itself. On the other hand, it may be seen as an aspect of the unconscious emotional function that binds the couple together in the analysis. Monotony, then, is no longer intrinsic to \"the patient's\" perversion, but becomes the search for \"mono-tony\" or \"at-one-ment\" in the here and now of the session. At the root of this may be the fear of the tensions that arise from confrontation and difference, which may cause the pair to stay rigidly on the same wave. Then, analyst and patient maintain an adhesive identification with each other to prevent separation, and they pay the price of boredom and immobility. The field theory point of view is distinguished by two important aspects. As the analyst listens from the perspective of a \"narrative We,\" this protects the pair from a judgmental attitude and, consequently, from a form of perversion of the analytic relationship. Second, it detects precise and distinct signs of how the process of mutual recognition unfolds on the level of the third, intersubjective or \"common,\" unconscious. The fundamental postulate is that psychic suffering, including that which is expressed in sadomasochism, stems from important deficits in this same process in the primal relationship to the object. Consequently, it is important to privilege the level of being-with rather than that of knowing-about.</p></p>","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139579565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Schwartz (bio) </li> </ul> <h2>Introduction</h2> <p>Psychoanalysis as a body of knowledge has always encompassed contested areas; some of these concepts and ideas are deemed controversial yet remain within our lexicon, while others are discarded or become taboo. The topic (or even the word) perversion is one such vexed subject—pathologizing in tone and connotation, with outdated referents that arouse enormous anxiety and even hostility.</p> <p>This is not without reason or merit. Historically, the term has been used in ways that have harmed certain subgroups (homosexuals being the most flagrantly harmed group) to very real exclusionary and damaging effects. Despite a complete reversal in recent years, the damage (and guilt) remains palpable and the mere utterance of the word perversion can rankle and alienate. Hence, for some psychoanalytic practitioners, the term has become forbidden territory, and those who dare to even think it are judged immoral, while others make use of it, but often without being explicit about its parameters.</p> <p>At least aspirationally, we are not an industry that traffics in moralism and judgmentalism. We judge (as part of thinking) but do not <em>pre</em>-judge, and we do not value judgment<em>alism</em>—that being a proclivity to view others absent compassion, empathy, and understanding. We aspire to openness and free communication of even hateful feelings and thoughts. Our unconscious houses the full range of human potentiality, for good or ill. Doesn't free association promote the expression of destructive forces that live in our psyche so that the naming of such can lead to greater understanding? In this vein, does naming have to be pathologizing in such a way that harms rather than facilitates understanding? The relevance of these questions varies around <strong>[End Page 627]</strong> the psychoanalytic world. Some analysts use the term perversion freely, while others, especially in North America, revile it.</p> <p>Perhaps it would be helpful to begin by defining basic psychoanalytic ideals and goals that surround and embed—indeed, are definitional of—mental health. Psychoanalysis is a process with implicit assumptions about what it means to grow and flourish in ways that are healthy and expansive. What are the elements that make up such a mind and life? Though we do not legislate ways of being or instruct our patients about the choices they should make, we promote a <em>process</em> that engenders <em>mentally healthy capacities</em>, ways of being toward oneself and others that are mutually vitalizing and constructive. To cultivate these capacities is to expand the range of choices for our patients. Among these are the capacity to experience the full range of feelings, to","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139579695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From there I comment on Lacan's study of Sade in order to highlight the tragic melancholia that underlies perversion, using sexual drives to compensate for the lack and the loss of objectal satisfaction. The study of the psychosexual dynamic of perversion leads us to the key role of sublimation as the reverse of perversion. In fact, it is one thing to talk about sadomasochistic interpersonal dynamics, and another to distinguish the character of sexual perversion. I will start from Freud's work \"A Child is Being Beaten,\" which examines seven cases of children who all have masochistic fantasies that lead to sexual pleasure. I will discuss the reasons why the sadomasochistic perversion appears so early and often is maintained throughout life, preventing the development of an integral love relationship. It begins by exploring reportage on the war in Ukraine as it has touched on these figures (often with conflicting and self-contradictory messaging), and it argues that we need psychoanalysis to approach these problematics. It then goes on to explore psychoanalysis’s historical relationship to both femininity and Jewishness, and it suggests that reexamining psychoanalysis both as a Jewish science and as a discourse that takes femininity distinctively seriously, via the frame of the conflict in Ukraine, might do something for our vantage on psychoanalysis itself as a historical, political, and ethical development. Ultimately, its claim is that the mutual imbrication of psychoanalysis, Jewishness, and femininity suggests a model of affiliation and relation based on the critical category of the navel, whose mechanics might offer new ways of imagining the collective life of psychoanalysis itself.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135640193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, Annie Ernaux’s depictions of the narrativization process in her novel A Girl’s Story is used as a point of departure for reflections on how and under what circumstances it might be possible to find words for experiences that have neither been recognized by the person involved nor talked about before. Through close reading, and in dialogue with psychoanalytic theories on trauma, I discuss how we might understand the possibility of representing trauma symbolically and the different modes of such representation. The movement between an experiential and a more reflective mode is discussed as a feature of Ernaux’s narrative that might have enabled the integration of experiences into consciousness. I discuss how Ernaux’s literary project described as “making the personal universal” can be understood as a process aimed at constituting a reality that has been cut off from history: directed toward the possibility of establishing a present external, and hence more authentic, internal witness to past events.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135640196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I see this as a valid method when used with patients we can ascribe to the neurotic area, but not with the more seriously ill, non-neurotic patients. This distinction does not particularly concern symptomatology, but a kind of unconscious functioning. When working with more seriously ill patients, such as those who have suffered infantile emotional trauma, or have a borderline or a psychotic disorder, analysts are confronted with more complex tasks. Considered here are functions of the mind outside awareness, the problem of non-representability, and several aspects of psychotic functioning. As the title states, this article goes beyond the dynamic unconscious to investigate areas of the mind that have not yet been systematically explored.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135640682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
