However, not enough attention has been paid to the examples of cities that did not succeed in implementing these plans, or to the alternative models that emerged from the oppositions they encountered on the ground. This is why the case of Seville and its Plaza de San Francisco, in apparent conflict with a general history of public space, is presented here — it shows, distinct from the plaza mayor, specifically the emergence of a city project based on the initiative of the private owners, with the connivance of the urban planning authorities. By consulting primary sources, a historical development of these processes is established as well as their consequences for the contemporary city.","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75839242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

She was the first to propel this notion within the context of political theory and philosophy, in particular in her well-known book, The Human Condition (1958). In this book, Arendt coins public space as ‘the space of appearance'. In this notion two elements are essential: the condition of plurality and the essential aspect of freedom (to act). In this article, I examine how this notion relate to another important term in Arendt's oeuvre, the notion of the ‘world'. ‘World' in Arendt's writings refers to human interventions on earth, not only institutions, but also ‘things'. Arendt propels this ‘world-of-things’ as prerequisite for a sensible political realm. I discuss aspects of durability, materiality, remembrance, and experience, that according to Arendt, are politically charged. The notion, I conclude, bridges between the political realm and tangible architectural objects and interventions of architectural practice.","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78747046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It specifically traces the interest of the Cuban architects in developing construction methods from local sources and materials. One of these methods was ceiling systems made from ceramic bricks and tiles to make reinforced and unreinforced shells for houses, schools, factories, and recreational facilities. The architect Juan Campos Almanza led research in the Centre for Technical Investigations to design systemised but flexible and scalable vault systems. He and other architects later used these systems in projects across the country. This experimental period involved architects, engineers, and builders working together on accelerating building crafts under the pressure of mass construction and material limitations. The efforts of these groups came to a stop in 1963 when the Ministry of Construction decided to resort to total mechanised construction of concrete panels, alienating all other forms of local and craft-based building techniques. The experimental period of vaults in Cuba, which ended in 1963, highlights how state-sponsored institutions in Cuba played a decisive role in both pushing and suppressing innovative building techniques after the Revolution.","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81603479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Virtuous motivations are insufficient to navigate the wicked ethical dilemmas encountered in some of these settings. We draw lessons from global health and allied fields to highlight the need for an ethical framework to guide architecture and planning research, and practice with humanitarian motives. Employing analogical reasoning, we utilise data primarily from academic and grey literature, and transcripts from public presentations, to distil five principles to guide and initiate conversations around ethical issues to consider in global humanitarian architecture and planning. These principles revolve around obligation and capacity to act; purpose and expectations; responsibility, burden, and risk; transparency, privacy, and sharing; and self-determination and empowerment. We do not prescribe a panacea, but offer initial thoughts on why and how architects and planners need to situate our values, judgments, and actions within the unique histories and lived experiences of the people and places we engage with for our global humanitarian architecture and planning projects.","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77148875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There has been little understanding of what households own, collect, store, and dispose of, nor the implications this might have for domestic space design, especially that for storage. The stuff that inhabitants own is largely overlooked in current debates on housing policy and design. Yet, householders can have their quality of life, well-being, and happiness negatively affected by the ‘stuff’ they keep in their homes. This study presents a critical, exploratory, and reflective enquiry into the relationship between stuff and housing design, using a multi-methodological approach that combines design research and a visual and sensory ethnography. The research engaged practising architects to propose innovative storage-focused housing design solutions by using architectural probes to enable them to think about housing design from an untested perspective. The findings present a unique exploration of how domestic space has changed overtime, capturing the intellectual agenda of the house as a ‘container’ and the household contents, the ‘stuff’, as the ‘contained’. The study finds how multi-method explorative methodologies are a helpful analytical mechanism to creatively consider architectural design challenges that need to include diverse and often overlooked perspectives. Its main output is a new conceptual framework of material possessions, which identifies universal characteristics and categories to be used in housing design, and proposes innovative housing design solutions for the UK standardised house type. The study concludes that the design of future homes could better support inhabitants’ quality of life and well-being if space for storage was better understood. It argues for a more informed approach to housing design, where storage is valued and the space provided is flexible, so the reality of inhabitants’ ‘stuff’, and the associated well-being implications are considered.","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84803213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of the drivers for change are well known and have existed for many years, indeed decades. There have always been good reasons for reducing energy consumption in buildings, but the increasing impacts of climate change, and more recently the energy crisis, have made these immediate and critical issues. Similarly, the need to make buildings healthy has always been a desirable objective, but the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, in which most transmissions occurred in buildings, also raised the profile of the role of design for health; this has been further highlighted by the recent tragic case of Awaab Ishak. Prior to this, the Grenfell tragedy heightened awareness of the imperative to design safe buildings, which has led to rapid changes in British regulation that further impact on professional standards, education, and accreditation. All these elements have raised serious questions about the role of the profession. It is clear that we are not yet delivering buildings at scale that meet these objectives. The failure to innovate when being confronted by early signals means that we need to innovate rapidly now. Is the profession ready for this? Architecture is an industry that relies on ‘tried and tested’ methods, in which changes were incremental and innovation was stylistic. We have got behind the curve and there is a need to accelerate the pace of change. This will require the rapid acquisition and implementation of knowledge, and so the ability to undertake high quality research is fundamental. We need new knowledge that can be applied in design and construction, and that can evidence the outcomes of design and the performance of buildings for further innovation or implementation. Robustly and effectively developing such knowledge about processes, systems, and technologies, and understanding how these impact on occupants, requires research thinking and skills. The need for the profession to be engaged in research has never been more pressing, but to date it has been slow to respond to the need for fundamental shifts in theoretical and applied research. In public, architecture tends to celebrate our best buildings as artworks, reflecting wider journalistic and rhetorical publicity to promote architecture. By contrast, cognate professions — such as medicine, engineering, pharmacy, and law— place greater public emphasis on research, relying on robust evidence to demonstrate the value that their professions add and the standards to which they work. The architectural profession has not invested enough in research as a means of achieving new products and services. It is one in which the commercial imperative has become predominant. In the mid-1970s, almost 50% of all UK architects","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73675845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It analyses the space syntax by using results obtained from a survey and software that uses correlation coefficients. The studied contexts include an organic (historical) context in Chizar, an orthogonal (modern) context with a combination of urban squares in Narmak, and another orthogonal (modern) context combined with hierarchical passages (cul-de-sacs) in the Khazane neighbourhood in Tehran. The results show a significant correlation between respondents' house location, their use of behavioural settings, and evaluation of environmental affordances for both walking and sitting. Correlations are generally highest for integration and mean depth attributes, and relatively higher in the organic context of Chizar. The orthogonal context with a combination of squares in Narmak is better for walking and the organic context in Chizar for sitting. The Khazane context shows medium results in both cases and lower correlations. Regarding the integration attribute, its correlation is direct with sitting or gathering, and inverse with walking. This result is inconsistent with the findings of numerous previous studies which may in turn be recognised as a characteristic of a specific spatial culture.","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75828425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, heritage architecture is investigated by taking an interdisciplinary lens to questions of meaning-making, place, memory, and culture. The article explores how these are shaped at the intersection of spatial design, human embodiment, and modes of cultural production. First, it situates the special issue’s theme by introducing the notions of affect, atmosphere, embodiment, affordances, and politics of meaning-making. This positioning comes through an overview of the three influential yet still separate strands of scholarship — affective and more-than-representational approaches to heritage; the politics and agency in meaning-making in places of memory; and the emerging embodied and experiential turn in architectural scholarship driven by the knowledge from embodied cognitive science. The second part outlines the special issue contributions and explores the common threads in how collected papers have addressed the relationship between embodiment, meaning-making, and political agency in the context of heritage architecture. Finally, in this introductory article, we discuss the emerging perspectives and research agenda for interdisciplinary investigations on how heritage architecture is produced, registered, and experienced.","PeriodicalId":44236,"journal":{"name":"METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78266667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
