This study, therefore, seeks to determine the optimum WWR for fully-enclosed courtyard residential building typology for Kafanchan and its environs. The Integrated Environment Solution and Virtual Environment (IES-VE) simulation software was used to simulate five typologies of WWRs for four typologies of room area(s) in fully-enclosed courtyard residential buildings in Kafanchan. The IES-VE software was used for the simulation experiment. WWRs were developed into five models which were simulated to determine the optimum. The results revealed that, WWR4 (window size of 1.44m2) has better air temperature condition in all the room areas than all the remaining WWRs. This suggests that it is the best, followed by WWR3, 2, 1 and 5 respectively. Conclusively, WWR4 is the optimum. However, further simulation studies are required to understand optimum location of windows for improved airflow in the fullyenclosed courtyard building.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122822239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This makes contractor selection processes an onerous task to be performed by the client. Yet, without a proper and accurate method for selecting the most appropriate contractor, the performance of the project will be affected denying clients value for money. Therefore, the study assessed the Influence of contractor selection criteria on critical success factor of public project delivery in Abuja, Nigeria using self-administered structured questionnaires to construction professionals. It was discovered that experience, financial capability, and technical capability are widely considered criteria in the selection process while all the critical success factors for project delivery are very much crucial and that procurement related factors, project stakeholders’ related factors, and daily site factors are essential factors to effective project delivery. The study concluded that there exists a significant relationship between the factors considered in selection of contractors and the criteria success factors. Based on the relati0nship between selection criteria and success factors, there is the need to adopt the selection criteria for each individual project based on project characteristics, client characteristics and external environment for effective project delivery. It is necessary to make good assessment of the technical capacity and experience of the contractors when considering the costfactor for project delivery.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"40-41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123065329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regulatory drivers aim to harmonise the recovery potentials of wastes, thereby reducing the volumes sent to landfill. In this vein, this paper investigates the emissions from municipal solid wastes, which can lead to major environmental impacts. This study assessed the influence of recovery efforts on solid waste management practices in Nigeria. This was done by examining available literature chronicling pollution from unregulated dumpsites which can bioaccumulate in the environment, causing climatic impacts. It was discovered that emissions from waste can impact soil, water, and air, thus contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Many developed countries have recorded significant improvement in adopting treatment facilities that can enable them to meet up sustainable development goals. However, developing countries still need assistance in developing a sustainable waste management programme that can help change their lifestyle, thus improving the management of the waste they produce. It becomes imperative that making the right choices can change the consumption pattern, thus, reducing the influx of pollutants whilst fostering a clean environment. Thus, a high-level recovery of resources can secure a sustainable future and a healthy environment.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114733075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article assessed the benefits of RFID technology for transport logistic operations in the construction industry. Lagos State and the F.C.T. Abuja, Nigeria were the selected geographical study areas, from which 5 manufacturing companies, 5 retailing companies and 5 construction projects were purposively selected. Mixed methods research strategy was used. The research instruments included an observation guide (quantitative) and interviews (qualitative). The collected quantitative data were analysed, using descriptive analytical tools: frequencies and percentiles. The qualitative data was analysed, using the thematic method. The study found that 80% and 60% of the manufacturing and retailing sectors respectively, observed, adopted RFID technology for transportation processing operations. The study revealed further that, RFID technology was not utilised in construction for transportation purposes. It was found that the key benefits of utilising the RFID technology are: improved degree of material traceability; improves safety of resources; improvement in control of material; easy to tracking of materials on site; check on the availability of materials; and allows for contactless identification in construction. It can be concluded that implementation of RFID technology in construction would translate into improvement in material control, checking, tracking, safety and traceability onsite.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129786270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The media, a major social institution charged with the responsibility of protecting public interest and fostering development, has a role through its information service function, to put accurate and relevant information on national issues out there for the consumption of their audiences. It is against this backdrop that this study examined the media as a strategic partner in promoting and sustaining food production in Ghana, using a local rice campaign by Citi FM as a case. Situated within the social responsibility and the agenda setting theories, this study was approached qualitatively, using semi-structured interviews with the Programme Director of Citi FM’s local rice campaign and the Head of Communications at the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) Office in Ghana. The study found among other things that, promoting agriculture was a core vision of Citi FM, and by this campaign, local rice production and consumption in Ghana was boosted per the strategies and information provided. However, this effort which aimed at improving the economic fortunes of farmers and reducing unemployment led to the FM station losing advertisement from rice importers. This paper recommends governmental support for sustainability focused media organisations, while urging others, especially local language FM stations to be sustainability oriented, and have as their vision, a commitment to promoting local initiative and fostering development to be able to contribute significantly to the global picture of promoting and attaining the SDGs by 2030.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127879502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They strongly relate to the users' satisfaction, particularly with traditional markets and modern shopping facilities. The study examines the users' (buyers and sellers) satisfaction with facilities in the Mowe market along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The sampling frame for the buyers (1392) and sellers (754) emanated from market management. The sample size emerged from a 10% sample of the buyers and sellers, utilising a simple random sampling technique to collect data from (n=145) respondents using a structured questionnaire. The study utilised a 5-point Likert summation scale and multiple linear regression for data analysis. Findings reveal that 59% of the respondents are between 30-49 years, 36.3% have attained secondary education, and 71.9% are employed and largely in the informal sector. The Likert scale of satisfaction reveals that the buyers are moderately satisfied with safety and security (2.83), firefighting (2.80) and spaces for buying and selling (2.73) and these are the least three factors in that category. In contrast, the sellers are dissatisfied with the condition of the shops and stalls (2.48), cleanliness (2.33) and noise levels (2.02). Inferential evidence reveals that both age (t= - 2.706; β = -0.091, sig = 0.008 < 0.05) and level of education (t= -0.698; β = -0.028, sig = 0. 486 > 0.05) have negative prediction for satisfaction. The study concludes that apart from the general market condition, safety and security is the most critical factor to consider in the management plan for the Mowe market. The study recommends a regeneration plan towards improving the general conditions of the market to enhance users' satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130028650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study analysed three environmental attributes such as structural, neighbourhood and natural attributes of the environment with a view to determining its hedonic value upon which residential property price is derived. In order to achieve the aim of the study, a sample size of 2401 was drawn out of 104166 properties using estimation method; 50% estimation rate and precision range of ±4 were adopted in estimating the sample size. The study administered two set of structured questionnaires; one to Estate Surveyor and Valuer firms to collect data on rental values (2008-2019) and second questionnaires were administered on the respondents to collect information on condition of environmental attributes using the census and simple random sampling method technique. Hedonic regression was employed to analyse the data. Environmental attributes were scored based on current condition and ratio scale was used alongside the average property value. The result revealed that neighbourhood attributes contributed between 60.3% -71.6%, natural attributes contributed between 60.3%-71.7% while structural attributes contributed between 66.8%-75.1% in determining the property values across the selected areas. The result of mixed regression analyses further revealed that environmental attributes contributed about 70.1% in determining the value of property in the selected areas. Environmental attributes such as natural and man-made water supply, road, quality wall-structure and floor, landscape, bathroom and streetlight contributed significantly in the determination of property values across the study areas. The study therefore concludes that the value of environmental amenity should be captured in the price of residential properties close to it. It is recommended that every stakeholders in the built environmental advocate for quality and even distribution of common environmental facilities that are key to development of property market in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122611461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This led to the development of various responsive strategies for survival. However, previous research efforts have overlooked the three success indices (output, profitability and employment conditions), which have been found to be the major areas affected by recession which can lead to the total collapse of a firm. The aim of the research is to assess the influence of survival strategies on the growth or decline of profitability of construction firms. The study then established the relationship between the experience and profitability of the firms. A quantitative approach using an online questionnaire survey was adopted for this study. One hundred (100) of the top customers of some selected banks were contacted and sixty-seven (67) of those firms agreed to participate in the survey and had the survey links sent to them. Forty-two (42) filled questionnaires were retrieved. The SPSS (version 23) statistics software package was used to assess the mean scores and Pearson’s chi-square test to assess the relationship between a firm’s profitability and the firm’s years of experience. The study found optimum utilization of workforce (Minimizing staff redundancies) to be the most used strategy; placing greater emphasis on marketing, building relationships, effective planning and management was rated as most important strategy; while trying new methods and technologies to improve productivity had the highest influence on growth in profitability. The study recommended that construction firms should make marketing to new clients and establishing a bond with existing clients a core job function while putting more efforts on understanding methods of optimally utilizing their existing workforce and eliminating staff redundancies. ","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"231 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122530962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is a lack of empirical understanding relating to the contribution of public procurement process, barriers, drivers and selection criteria combined to project delivery in Nigeria context. This study identified five major constructs which were conceptualised to establish how different procurement options influence project delivery. The constructs were operationalized and developed into a questionnaire in a cross-sectional study. Data were sought from professionals involved in the management, design and operations of construction projects in Lagos and Abuja (i.e. project managers, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, and procurement officers). The data were analysed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) in order to determine the link among the constructs interrogated. The findings indicated that all the latent variables included in the conceptual model jointly contributed 59 per cent of variance explained. It was also revealed that drivers of procurement selection and selection criteria are significantly related to effective project delivery. Findings from this research show that for project to be successful in terms of cost, time, and other characteristics as stated in this paper, the most critical approaches to adopt are design-and-build and collaborative procurement. This implies that making the correct choice of construction procurement strategies is a recipe for project success. Government authorities and business organizations seeking infrastructure and procurement system improvements at various levels could use the developed model to improve project delivery.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129289962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, a simple feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) was implemented for the automatic classification of various crop types. A DJI Mavic air drone was used to simultaneously collect about 549 images of a mixed-crop farmland belonging to Federal University of Technology Minna, Nigeria. The images were annotated and the ANN algorithm was implemented using custom-designed Python programming scripts with libraries such as NumPy, Label box, and Segmentation Mask, for the classification. The algorithm was designed to automatically classify maize, rice, soya beans, groundnut, yam and a non-crop feature into different land spectral classes. The model training performance, using 70% of the dataset, shows that the loss curve flattened down with minimal over-fitting, showing that the model was improving as it trained. Finally, the accuracy of the automatic crop-type classification was evaluated with the aid of the recorded loss function and confusion matrix, and the result shows that the implemented ANN gave an overall training classification accuracy of 87.7% from the model and an overall accuracy of 0.9393 as computed from the confusion matrix, which attests to the robustness of ANN when implemented on high-resolution image data for automatic classification of crop types in a mixed farmland. The overall accuracy, including the user accuracy, proved that only a few images were incorrectly classified, which demonstrated that the errors of omission and commission were minimal.","PeriodicalId":442092,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Technology and Science Journal","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124620227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
