The present work aimed to study how hip extension in the take-off of the tucked back somersault influences the velocity of rotation and the height of the somersault. To this end, we recorded a total of 60 somersaults by 4 gymnasts (i.e., 15 somersaults each). There were three groups of somersaults based on the instructions that were given to the gymnasts: no specific instruction, somersault as high as possible and rotate as fast as possible. The records were then analyzed in order to quantify the following variables: maximal height of the mass center and maximal body angular velocity during somersault, the hip angle and the knee angle at the take-off. Gymnasts seemed to be inclined to bend their knees rather than extend their hips in order to carry out the instruction.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41712203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimal vaulting technique depends on many variables, such as the approaching run. Gymnastics is one of the early specialization sports as it is necessary to start training at an early age. For this reason, the aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship among age, biomotor and technical components in relation to the approach run velocity and other variables in AG. Furthermore, similarities and differences between genders were researched. Twenty female and twelve male gymnasts took part in the study. Speed, agility, explosive power, run-up velocity were measured. Additionally, Reactive Strength Index (RSI) and Peak High Velocity distances (PHV_Distance) were calculated. Kinematic parameters during the handspring vault were calculated by a two-dimensional video analysis. A statistical comparison between genders was performed by the Mann Whitney U test. The relationships between parameters were given by Spearman correlation coefficients (r). Anaerobic power, 0-20 m speed, 20 m speed velocity, and the hand contact time were significantly different between genders (p<0.05). The approach run significantly correlated with the chronological age (r=0.66; p=0.002 for female and r=0.96; p<0.001 for male gymnasts), PHV_Distance (r=0.69; p=0.001 for female and r=0.97; p<0.001 for male gymnasts) and the biological age (r=0.69; p=0.001 for female and r=0.97; p<0.001 for male gymnasts). As the approach run velocity increases, vaulting performance is affected positively. While speed tests significantly correlated with the approach run in male gymnasts, there was no correleation for females. In addition, trainers should keep in mind that the relationship between bio-motor development and biological age of gymnasts is important in training programs.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46789553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, limited studies havefocused on the relationship between social media and eating behaviors of athletesparticipating in aesthetic sporting events, even though the highest rates of disordered eatingpatterns occur in sports where female athletes are scored on judges’ opinions (Hausenblas &Carron, 1999; Smolak, Murnen, & Ruble, 2000; Sundgot-Borgen, 1994), and where leanness,thinness, and aesthetic skills and aspects are emphasized (Byrne & McLean, 2002; DiBartolo& Shaffer, 2002). Thus, the current study sought to understand the links among collegegymnasts’ perceptions of body image, disordered eating behaviors, and perceptions ofathletes’ body images presented on social media. Furthermore, the study also explored howcriticism presented on social media relates to disordered eating symptomatology. The studywas conducted via an online survey system by 72 18-25-year-old females who were currentlycompeting or recently competed in club or collegiate gymnastics. Results found significantcorrelations between the severity of critical comments about physical appearance, emotionalreaction to criticism about physical appearance, and disordered eating behavior in instanceswhere the comments were not made on social media, but no correlation was found betweenseverity, emotional reaction, and disordered eating behaviors for comments made on socialmedia.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45178579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since theInternational Trampoline Federation (FIT) and the International Gymnastics Federation(FIG) merged in 1999, the growth and expansion of Trampoline Gymnastics have remainedconstant. In this process, the role played by the World Age Group Competitions (WAGC) isworth to be mentioned, as this event has been established as the main entrance pathway toany gymnast or national federation willing to reach the international elite level. The firstedition of these competitions dates back to 1973 in London, and the 27th took place in Tokyoin November 2019. This article aims to explain the key role played by WAGC in the evolutionand consolidation of this Olympic sport, by conducting an in-depth analysis of theparticipation data and medal distribution during the last fourteen editions, all the ones takingplace under the FIG umbrella. In order to complete a broader picture of these competitions, adetailed analysis in terms of editions, gender and disciplines is presented. Results return aclear dominance of the Russian Federation national team and a group of internationalcontenders that built up their strong presence at the international scene on top of a constantand well-planned strategy in WAGC. These events have achieved to become part of thesports’ internal culture and the education system has incorporated them into all therecommended procedures at the international level.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49228647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the present study was to investigate the acute psychologicalresponses of adults who take part in different types of leisure-time PA (gymnastics; Greektraditional dance; tennis). A total of 277 adults, aged 18-65 years (M= 35.9, SD= 12.76years), taking part in Greek traditional dance (n=89), gymnastics (n=88), or tennis (n=100)volunteered to participate. In order for potential changes in participants’ positive well-being,psychological distress and perceived fatigue to be examined, the Subjective ExerciseExperiences Scale (SEES) was administered before and after a session of the aforementionedprogrammes. The 3 (group [gymnastics vs Greek traditional dance vs tennis]) X 2 (time [pretestvs post-test) analyses of variance that were performed on the SEES subscales (positivewell-being; psychological distress; fatigue) revealed practically significant improvements inthe positive well-being for all participants (p<.001, η2=.25) and statistically significantinteractions (though not of practical importance) between group and time in positive wellbeing(p<.001, η2=.068), psychological distress (p<.05, η2=.02) and fatigue (p<.05,η2=.033), with participants in gymnastics presenting the most optimal results, followed bythose of Greek traditional dance. Although further research is needed to fully understand thefeatures of a PA/exercise that lead to the greatest boost in people’s well-being, taking intoaccount the growing prevalence of mental health disorders in our society, encouraging adultsto join in a leisure-time PA/exercise programme seems imperative for their (psychological)health benefit.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48009489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research indicatesthat sport participation could support balance development in children. To confirm the aboveeffect, this study investigated whether participation in different recreational physicalactivities could induce differences in children’s balance ability. Specifically, 138 children, 5-11 years old (Mage=8.4±1.3), classified into four groups according to the activity they tookpart in (basketball, track and field, rhythmic gymnastics, contemporary dance), were assessedby the balance subset of the KörperKoordinationstest für Kinder. Pearson correlations wereapplied to detect associations of balance scores with age, height, body mass index (BMI) andshowed significant correlations for BMI (p< .001). The analyses of covariance (covariate:BMI) that were computed on children’s balance scores showed statistically significant effectsof group (p< .001). Sidak post hoc tests indicated that children participating in rhythmicgymnastics surpassed all three other groups; whereas those taking part in basketball had thelowest scores in almost every balance item. It seems that the type of physical activity a childparticipates in could be a significant contributor to the development of his/her balance.Physical activities encompassing the execution of various balance tasks, such as rhythmicgymnastics, seem to offer children greater opportunities to make improvements in this areacompared to children engaging in activities of low balancing requirements. This findinghighlights the potential that is available to coaches: they can contribute to children’s balancedevelopment by implementing sport-specific programs that target this human ability.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43313435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Practice conditioncan affect the forgetting rate, favouring or not memory consolidation. Physical practice hasbeen shown to be effective in decreasing forgetting, but the role of mental practice is notknown yet. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the role of mental practice in theforgetting rate of a motor skill. Twenty-four participants with the mean age of 26.13 years (±3.04) of both genders were divided into three groups: (a) mental practice group (MG);physical practice group (PG) which practised the handstand skill either mentally orphysically, respectively, and (c) control group (CG) that did not practice the skill. Resultsshowed no difference between the forgetting rate of MG and PG. Also, they had forgettingrates lower than CG. Thus, it is suggested that mental practice is as effective as physicalpractice to decrease the forgetting rate of motor skills, favouring the maintenance of themovement representation in memory. Possibly, physical and mental practice conditions sharemechanisms that slow down forgetting processes.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44049823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Memberships, equipment and apparel purchases, subscriptions, and other data have been used as indirect substitutes for gauging interest and participation in gymnastics. A readily available tool for assessing gymnastics interest could be of use in uncovering myriad trends. Aim of Study: This study sought to use a relatively new internet search tool called Google TrendsTM (GT) to assess gymnastics interest by records of search terms used in GoogleTM. Methods: GoogleTM searches involve the use of search terms that are recorded and then accessible by GT. As GoogleTM searches provide access to topics of interest nearly anywhere in the world, by anyone with internet access, then using Google TrendsTM, then GT could be used to harvest the number and types of searches involving the search-terms “men’s gymnastics” and “women’s gymnastics.” The tally of the search terms was obtained using filters such as country, region, and others. GT reports the search-term trends by calculating a relative percentage based on a sample of the largest number of specific search-term use during a particular time. Although the relative percentage approach is somewhat awkward, processing large amounts of data may be considered valuable and otherwise unattainable. Results and Conclusions: Results should be interpreted cautiously. However, the analysis revealed a litany of important trends in the worldwide interest in gymnastics.","PeriodicalId":44084,"journal":{"name":"Science of Gymnastics Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47732651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
