The chip architecture, circuit design and the measured, results are described. The transmitter section of the IC comprises an interface to CMOS logic, a BPSK modulator providing the high carrier suppression needed for direct spread spectrum modulation, and an RF driver amplifier. The receive section is aconventional downcotiverter with an LNA stage, amixerand a three stage IF preamplifier (frequency range 50 to 500 MHz) with gain control. In addition, the chip includes a local oscillator chain to feed both TX and RX mixers (1.2 GHz oscillator, prescaler for PLL support and frequency doubler). Chip size. and power consumption is 3 mm2 and 400 mW repectively. The photoparametric mode of operation involves optical detection and amplification within a single device. The amplifier operation is based on non-linear characteristics of the photodiode and therefore, in system applications a full evaluation of amplifier performance in terms of intermodulation distortion is required. This is particularly important when such an amplifier is used on the receiving end of a sub-carrier multiplexed system. Effects of space harmonics and TE fields were demonstrated using experimental results for the first time. It was found that there was an error in the derivation of the correction factor commonly used for the uniform-axial-field assumption. It was shown that this error should be corrected at higher frequencies for accurate measurements. The 3D TLM method is used to compute in time domain the electromagnetic field in the structure. S-parameters of discontinuities are calculated from reflected and transmitted electromagnetic fields. An equivalent network of the discontinuity is extracted from the calculated S-parameters. This methodology is general and can be applied to any planar or 3D discontinuity, over a wide range of frequency. A Butler matrix can be used in DCS 1800 Base Stations as a transmit combining network and as a key element of Multiport Power Amplifiers (MPA's). As far as the phase-shifters are concerned, an innovating way of providing a phase-shift together with a very accurate slope equalization of the phase over a specified frequency band of operation is shown. This constitutes a very powerful tool in view of the design of beam forming networks for multibeam or reconfigurable antennas operating over a large bandwidth. The filter design consists firstly of an electromagnetic theoretical analysis of microstrip radial-line dividers-combiners and secondly of its appropriate use to achieve a recursive filter transfer function. The novelty in this work is to suspend the interdigitated lines on a thin dielectric membrane to eliminate the dielectric losses and to render the interdigitated filter physically realizable at millimter-wave frequencies. A wide band filter with a center frequency of 13.7 GHz and a bandwidth of 45% has been fabricated. The filter exhibits a port-to-port insertion loss of 0.7dB at 13.7 GHz.
