However, no previous research has objectively measured height and weight, examined a predominantly female population, or explicitly explored the contribution of handedness degree versus handedness direction in investigations. The present research objectively assessed height and weight in a sample of individuals with a range of hand preferences. Results: Left-handers were shorter than right-handers, but weighed the same. Left-handers therefore demonstrated a higher body mass index than right-handers. Conclusion: Results suggest handedness direction is related to objectively measure anthropomorphic characteristics in women. Because the current sample was predominantly female, future research could determine if the present findings reflect true gender differences in the relationship between height, weight, and handedness, or limitations of sample size.","PeriodicalId":439866,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of School and Cognitive Psychology","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124842628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This cross-sectional study examines the relation of gender, age, and parental employment status to academic and global self-esteem of 369 fourth to upper sixth form Caribbean secondary school adolescents. Their ages ranged from 13 to 18 years old (M=15.52, SD=1.21), 223 were females and 146 were males. The participants completed a questionnaire that assessed academic and global self-esteem. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, Independent t-tests and Multiple Regressions were used to analyse the data obtained from the sample. Results indicated no significant differences in self-esteem between male and female adolescents. With regard to age, the 16-18 year old age group had higher levels of academic self-esteem than the 13-15 year olds. Adolescents of unemployed parents had the highest academic and global self-esteem. However, multiple regression analyses did not reveal any predictive relationships. These findings are discussed with due consideration of earlier research and their implications for the psychology of Caribbean people.","PeriodicalId":439866,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of School and Cognitive Psychology","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132628645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All participants underwent resting magnetoencephalography (MEG), a non-invasive measure of direct neuronal activity, and estimates of physical activity and body composition were obtained using accelerometer and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, respectively. In contrast to previous studies in adults, we found no association between measures of resting neuronal activity and body composition or body mass index (BMI) percentile. However, time spent performing moderate- (r=0.905, p<0.0001), moderate-vigorous (r=0.886, p<0.0001) physical activity and overall activity counts (r=0.889, p<0.0001) were significantly correlated with increased power in the alpha band (8-12 Hz) in left and right central brain regions. These results are suggestive of a complex relationship between physical activity and resting brain function, believed to underlie the organization of sensorimotor and higher cognitive functions, critical to later academic success.","PeriodicalId":439866,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of School and Cognitive Psychology","volume":"61 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128880785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results of the repeated measures ANOVA showed that students scored significantly lower on compare problems than on combine and change word problems. Based on the results of this study, we disproved the hypothesis that the students in our sample experienced more difficulties in compare problems as a result of the so-called consistency effect; in fact they performed equally well on inconsistent and consistent compare problems. The findings indicate that the core problem which the students experience might be associated with the fact that they have difficulty in general with processing relational terms like ‘more than’ and ‘less than’. Future studies should, therefore, provide more insight into the reasons why compare problems in particular cause so many difficulties for both young and older students. This information would be helpful when it comes to developing more adequate word problem instructions that can be implemented in the curriculum of contemporary math education.","PeriodicalId":439866,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of School and Cognitive Psychology","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133833203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the earliest pioneers in the behavioral movement was Mary Parker Follett. Joint attention refers to the executive capacity to coordinate visual attention with another person. This pivotal skill begins to develop from 6 to 18 months of age and continues to be refined and coordinated throughout individual developmental trajectories. In this study joint attention was measured in forty-three 4 to 5-year-olds asked to coordinate their attention with that of an unfamiliar adult during a social attention word learning task. The results revealed that there were individual differences in joint attention for children in this age group which suggests that this may be a meaningful construct to measure. These data contribute to a small but growing literature on the potential utility of joint attention theory and measurement in preschool aged children to further our understanding of social attention coordination in classroom contexts.","PeriodicalId":439866,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of School and Cognitive Psychology","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124857322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was hypothesized that there would be significant differences in the family functioning of families having children with cerebral palsy and families having normal children. The case-control research design was used. The sample of the study was accessed from the special needs institutions (N=50). The measure used in the current research was the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES IV) by Olson, 2011. The findings from the current research reveal that there are significant differences in some of the dimensions of the family functioning of families having children with cerebral palsy in comparison to the families having normal children. The family cohesion, flexibility, communication were found to have better accounted for family functioning. The enlightening findings from the current research carry strong implications for the researchers, psychologists, family therapists, community workers and for psychiatrists.","PeriodicalId":439866,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of School and Cognitive Psychology","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128180593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
