The AC field distributions within the insulation system depend on permittivities of materials. Contrary to AC field distribution, DC field stresses are determined by conductivities of the insulating materials. Therefore, knowledge about the conductivity of the insulating liquid is of tremendous importance for design and safe operation in the HVDC transmission technology. The conductivities of insulating liquids depend on several parameters, e.g. time, temperature, particle type and contamination level, moisture content of liquid and electrical field strengths. In this contribution, the effect of different cellulose contamination levels on electrical conductivities of insulating liquids is presented for natural and synthetic ester liquids compared to mineral oil. The time behavior of electrical conductivity is studied adding different amounts of particles in a defined volume of liquids. The aim of this comparative study is to illustrate the electrical conductivity behavior of mentioned alternative liquids and their applicability as HVDC insulation. The measurements are performed using different types and amounts of dried and wet cellulose particles. In addition, the impact of moisture content of various particle levels on the liquids conductivity is measured. The results indicate an increase of electrical conductivity for higher contamination levels in the liquid samples. Moreover, the water content of cellulose contamination also leads to differences in electrical conductivities in the various insulating liquids.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129328837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is well-known that water molecules in the oil have detrimental effect on its conduction and breakdown strength and tend to cause accelerated aging of oil and paper insulation system. The relation of the total amount of water to the electrical properties of oil has been widely investigated. A turning point of moisture content has been found that beyond this point the abrupt decrease of AC breakdown strength of oil is alleviated and keep almost constant with the further increasing of moisture content. Water state in saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons have been studied and indicated that the state of water molecules is closely related to the electrical conductivity of hydrocarbons. Therefore, it is of great importance to investigate the water state in the mineral transformer oil with different moisture contents. In this paper, mineral transformer oil was treated at different humidity and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) was used to characterize the water state of oil samples with different moisture contents. Moreover, the water state in the oil samples was investigated using a molecular dynamics simulation. By analyzing the formation of hydrogen bonds and the diffusion behavior of water molecules, it is found that the hydrogen bond energy is greatly changed by varying the moisture content of mineral oil, which lead to the change of the state of water clusters.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127279959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hole mobilities in n-hexane is computed with molecular dynamics, quantum chemical and kinetic Monte Carlo calculations. Hole injection current is computed via semi-phenomenological models with the aid of quantum chemical calculations. At low electric field, hole mobility is comparable to that of ions, however, in electric fields approaching the dielectric breakdown field, hole mobility becomes larger than that of ions. As pointed out for charge injection in organic semiconductors, the success of F-N model is probably accidental because the thickness of the potential barrier is larger than the distance between hopping sites. The injection current rapidly increases with the electric field above 102 kV/mm.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130591361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The multilevel system of transformer diagnostics in which at the first level of diagnosis the parameters of oil are measured and analysis of gases dissolved in oil is performed is presented as the tool applied in assessment of technical condition of the transformer in service. On the basis of the theoretical considerations on the system presented the selected case studies were shown where the different transformer failures were detected by means of skillfully performed oil-based diagnostic procedure. The adopted approach helped in the decision making process on withdrawing the faulty oil power transformers from service and sent them for repair in a right time.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131952413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the mineral oils as a transformer insulating fluid represents a thread to the environment. With a considerable amount of research, the biodegradable insulating fluids based on natural esters were developed and used as a replacement for mineral oil. Their main features are biodegradability, a good thermal and insulating features, a high fire resistance etc. Compared to the mineral oil, the fluids based on natural esters still have a problematic development of a trend of dissipation factor in the long-term period due to lower oxidative stability. This paper primarily presents a comparison of key dielectric parameters of clean natural ester insulation fluid (rapeseed oil) and several mixtures of this rapeseed oil with 1 wt% of different antioxidants. The aim of this paper is to choose the antioxidant which contributes to achieving the best dielectric parameters of oil based on the measurement of breakdown voltage, dissipation factor and real part of relative permittivity. The oil samples were also exposed to the elevated temperature to evaluate the oxidation stability based on values of dissipation factor. The results of these measurements under high voltage are also supplemented with a detailed analysis by broadband dielectric spectroscopy.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131626186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared with vegetable oils, the mineral oils show better dielectric properties, however, they can be dangerous for the living environment and their flammability is higher. The vegetable oils are composed of natural ester molecules with a triacylglycerol structure. The mineral oils are a mixture of hydrocarbons produced from crude oil. Recently, additives in the form of dispersed nanoparticles, for example SiO2, TiO2, ZnO, Al2O3, are used for improvement of certain dielectric properties of mineral oils. Another way is how the dispersed nanoparticles will improve the dielectric properties of natural esters. This paper deals with modified rapeseed oil with dispersed adapted nanoparticles TiO2 and only its some important dielectric properties. The results showed that each analyzed dielectric property was improved beside real part of complex permittivity. Modified rapeseed oil with dispersed adapted nanoparticles TiO2 was evaluated as prospective electrical insulating liquid.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128802008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is susceptible to oxidation. Under severe oxidation, the oil sample could gel whose impact on insulation performance is not known. In this research, we focus on the impact of the gelling process of natural ester on its breakdown characteristics. In order to survey this, a breakdown test platform was first assembled. Then the experiment was conducted, with the results showing that the gelling procedure includes three stages, the liquid, the sol and the gel. The sol was found to show a poor breakdown performance and also impact the breakdown performance of the fresh oil if it is dissolved. The gel, more in a solid form similar to jelly, showed slightly a higher breakdown performance itself but slightly impacted the fresh oil under mixture.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115177372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vegetable insulating oil differs from mineral insulating oil in their molecular structures, components, physicochemical and electrical properties. This lead to that the two kinds of oil have different acid composition. At the same time, vegetable oil-paper insulation will be affected by many factors such as heat, moisture and oxygen, which makes acidic substance produce more complex. Therefore, this paper explores the change law of acid value in vegetable insulating oil under the condition of hydrolysis, oxidation and aging, studies the influence of different acid value on breakdown performance on positive and negative polarity in small gaps under lighting impulse. The results show that acid value has a significant impact on negative polarity, the breakdown voltage will decrease with the increase of acid value, while it has no obvious influence on positive polarity in small gaps under lighting impulse.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115166388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we present the application of these methods to a detailed dataset obtained on the oxidative and inert pyrolytic thermal aging of dodecylbenzene (DDB) liquid dielectrics. This data set formed part of extensive work by the University of Southampton on the ageing of DDB containing insulation systems. This dataset covers isothermal ageing from 90 to 135 °C with ageing time extending up to 3000 hours in air and nitrogen in the presence of aluminium, copper, paper or copper and paper which relate to the interest in these materials on ageing effects in power transformers and fluid filled cables. The DDB studied was largely comprised of common mixed isomer fluids but data was also examined for single isomer DDB. We illustrate the application where chemometrics operates on the infrared spectrum and relate the spectral information to the change in fluid chemistry on ageing and on resulting fluid metrics such as dielectric permittivity and loss, acid number and water content. We show how chemometric measurement models can be established and used to determine the precise condition of thermally aged fluids.
