There are several methods to achieve and to stimulate underwater spark breakdowns, including free-discharges, wire-guided and gas-bubble stimulated discharges. In the present work, air bubbles are injected into water in order to achieve spark discharges in relatively long inter-electrode gaps. This paper reports on hydrodynamic and acoustic characteristics of spark discharges stimulated by air bubbles and presents the functional relationships between the hydrodynamic and electrical parameters of such discharges, including breakdown voltage, spark plasma resistance and energy available in the discharge. A hydrodynamic analytical model has been developed and used to calculate the acoustic efficiency of the underwater spark discharges.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133896941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of μs and sub-μs high voltage impulses of sufficient magnitude, the breakdown develops through the formation of plasma streamers in the water. When the first streamer crosses the entire inter-electrode gap, the energy released in the breakdown channel transforms this channel into a gas/vapor cavity, which pulsates and radiates acoustic impulse(s). Optimisation of the hydrodynamic (period of cavity oscillation) and acoustic (peak magnitude of the acoustic impulse(s)) parameters is required for practical applications of these underwater spark discharges. The present paper analyses the functional behavior of the period of cavity oscillation and the peak magnitude of the acoustic impulse for spark discharges generated by self-triggered underwater discharges (free discharges), spark discharges triggered by air bubbles injected into the inter-electrode gap, and wire-guided discharges. The advantages and limitations of these methods of generation of underwater acoustic impulses by spark discharges are discussed.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125258161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to the AC voltage, HVDC equipment is subject to an additional DC load. For DC stress, the DC conductivity plays a decisive role in the resulting field distribution. To build insulation systems as compact as possible, the behaviour of the DC conductivity must be sufficiently known. The investigations presented here show, on the one hand, how a test vessel must be created so that measurements can be made below the room temperature. On the other hand, measurements of the DC conductivity at lower temperatures are shown. First simulation approaches are illustrated in order to simulate the intended behaviour.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124047484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They show a comparable dielectric strength to mineral oil in homogeneous and slightly inhomogeneous fields. Nevertheless, differences exist between natural ester liquids and mineral oils in terms of electrical properties. The different ratios of liquid and solid insulation materials permittivities at interfaces cause a shift in electric field distribution within the insulation system of a transformer. Therefore, it is important to explore the effects of interfacial surface creep breakdown strength at high stressed oil-paper interfaces inside power transformers. This will be called simply creep breakdown. This study investigates the creep breakdown along an oil-paper interface at defined oil gap in natural ester liquid and mineral oil. A high-density pressboard sheet is impregnated and prepared giving a vertical electrode gap for AC creep breakdown test setup. Pressboard is fixed within one rounded electrode at the upper end and within one rounded electrode at the lower end. Special care is taken in the electrode design to avoid / minimize possible oil wedges in the setup. Tests are conducted with dry oil at a relative moisture content of less than 12 % of saturation. Breakdown mean values, 2 % withstand values and standard deviations are compared. The empirical breakdown results and the measured differences between the insulation liquids are used to interpret the effects of electric stress shift in natural ester liquids on transformer design rules.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"118 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114011711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Third mode streamer velocities were in the range 4–60 km/s. The \"acceleration\" of the average velocity with increasing voltage is not due to third mode, and third mode existed in a wide voltage range in both Nytro 10 XN and Primol 352. The voltage where third mode becomes common is almost the same in Nytro 10 XN and Diala S4 ZX-1, indicating that the presence of aromatics may have little influence over the initiation voltage for third mode. In this paper, a standard impulse breakdown voltage of the mineral oil and the mineral-oil based nanofluids is investigated. Three types of nanoparticle, i.e., Zinc oxide (ZnO), Barium titanate (BaTiO3) and Titanium dioxide (TiO2) with the mean diameter less than 100 nm are used to prepare the nanofluid samples. The first group of the nanofluid sample consists of the mineral oil mixed with the 0.01% volume fraction of nanoparticle. Another group of nanofluid sample comprises the mineral oil mixed with the 0.03% volume fraction of nanoparticle. Besides, the surfactant sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) is added in order to modify the surface of the nanoparticles. The needle-sphere electrode configuration with the gap spacing of 15 mm is employed for impulse breakdown voltage investigation of the dielectric liquids. The test circuit is set up in accordance with IEC 60897, and the test experiment is performed at the room temperature. The results show that the addition of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticle leads to the change in the impulse breakdown characteristics of the mineral oil in both positive and negative impulse polarities. However, no significant change in the impulse breakdown characteristics is observed when adding BaTiO3 to the oil.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131895192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are a number of techniques developed for DGA that are represented extensively in literature. In practical application of DGA, there is a degree of measurement errors in obtained data. These errors are produced from inaccuracy in measurement system, environmental impact, and human errors. In the present study, it is aimed to investigate the sensitivity of different DGA techniques against measurement errors. The considered DGA techniques are IEC Ratio, Duval Triangle, and Pentagon shape. A total number of 380 actual samples were obtained from the Egyptian Electricity Network as well as published reports. Measurement errors are modeled with various levels as a percentage of original data using a random function. The three different DGA techniques are applied for error data and the corresponding diagnostic accuracy is evaluated. The techniques are compared on two stages. The first stage includes the comparison for only main faults, thermal, arcing and partial discharge. The second stage compares the diagnostic accuracy for detailed faults, such as low thermal, medium thermal, high thermal, and so on. Based on the results, the most robust technique is adopted.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"394 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122853215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In point-plane geometry, the inception of streamers is detected with a high temporal resolution (about 1 ns) by measurement of charge, visualization, and detection of phase change by scattered laser light. These techniques allow us to obtain precise measurements of the inception delay time, versus applied voltage and hydrostatic pressure. Measurements carried out in positive and negative polarity with a fast impulse voltage (20 ns risetime) show a large difference. In positive polarity, a minimum \"formative time\" close to 45 ns is observed, while negative streamers can appear almost immediately at high voltage. The hypothesis of cavitation induced by the EHD motion is considered to explain positive streamer inception.","PeriodicalId":439228,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 19th International Conference on Dielectric Liquids (ICDL)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130302221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information acquired by partial discharge detection, such as current pulse sequences, phase-resolved PD (PRPD) pattern and statistical parameters are obtained; moreover, optical properties of streamer in transformer oil are captured by fast-imaging technique. The experimental results show that the pulse sequences represent different mechanisms. The stopping length of streamer are highly dependent on the amplitude of applied voltage. Both PRPD patterns and the shapes of streamer indicate that the positive and negative streamers show a strong polarity effect under AC voltage.
