Join sequence optimization in parallel query plans 并行查询计划中的连接序列优化

Langer, Holger Meyer","doi":"10.1109/DEXA.1996.558601","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DEXA.1996.558601","url":null,"abstract":"We show an alternative way to optimize join sequences in a shared nothing architecture of the distributed relational DBMS HEAD. The hardware resources are also used for database independent applications in concurrency, for database access. To achieve a better hardware utilization we span a complete search space involving all intermediate shapes between left deep, right deep and bushy trees, but without join sequences including cartesian products. The approach is based on any combinatorial search engine and a complex cost function. The cost function involves the actual load of the processors, the network load, and the memory capacities. The new technique has free access to any join sequence in the whole search space. The approach is not restricted to acyclic join conditions.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131157700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author analyzes a stratified LDL program by partitioning it into modules. It is shown by example that many embedded SQL programs may be programmed easily and elegantly in nonrecursive LDL. First, multiparadigm programming relational database systems may be built for nonrecursive LDL, which are easier to design and implement than multiparadigm programming deductive database systems based on recursive LDL. One may then incrementally add modules to handle various recursions. Multiparadigm programming deductive database systems are more powerful and provide more programming methodologies to choose from but are more difficult to construct.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134484462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The notion of attribute as a basic modeling construct is used. The presented results show how to deal exactly some very known notions and how to extend and precise them. As a logical consequence of using the typed lambda calculus for description of semantics, some new constructs were proposed. A horizontal and vertical structuralization, horizontal and vertical statistical classification are shown as necessary and useful in modeling of statistical reality.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114148830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They consider that the works already done on such documents do not focus on this point enough. So, their model is based on views that reflect the potential ways of \"seeing\" multimedia documents. The semantic content of a document is one way of seeing documents. So, another problem is the way to determine this semantic content by using semantic channels between composing and composed documents. They present an application of their work in the RIME medical context dealing with texts and still images.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124873813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) build an execution platform for business processes in organizations of any size and structure. Performance is an important criteria for the applicability of WfMSs; they have to be scalable to varying load situations. The authors present a modular logical WfMS architecture, which is the basis for configuring the WfMS according to the performance needs of the application environment. Based on this logical architecture they define a data partitioning and replication scheme which allows to replicate and distribute components of the WfMS without raising synchronization efforts. As a consequence, the proposed physical architecture provides scalability.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123643503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimal application performance of a distributed object oriented database system requires class fragmentation and the development of allocation schemes to place fragments at distributed sites in order to minimize data transfer. Our approach is top down, and the entity of fragmentation is the class. Fragmentation algorithms have been proposed for the relational model, but the object model is relatively untouched. We present an algorithm for vertical fragmentation in a model consisting of complex attributes and complex methods. This type of fragmentation facilitates query decomposition, optimization, and parallel treatment for distributed object oriented database systems.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123818604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed PIOS is a server that supports an object-oriented data model, physical data independence (i.e. different strategies for storing class hierarchies, grouping, horizontal and vertical partitioning of objects), and fragmentation transparency (i.e. transactions are not aware of the distribution of database fragments on several nodes of a computer network). The problem of the optimization of distributed queries (i.e. determining which data must be accessed at which site and which data must be transmitted among sites) is the focus of the paper.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129494197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Words are very convenient retrieval units in English but not so in some Asian languages. The task of determining which morphemes constitute words in Vietnamese and Chinese is problematic, and has been assumed to be the reason that word based retrieval does not work so well. The paper examines a number of segmentation algorithms, and then reports on some experiments comparing morpheme and word based retrieval. It shows that morpheme based retrieval is hard to improve on.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116177857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Extracting symbolic objects from relational databases 从关系数据库中提取符号对象

The way we describe these groups makes it possible to analyse them by symbolic data analysis methods which extend classical ones to more complex data. In so far as the input consists of groups of data extensionally defined in the database, our problem is to find the best description representing each group in the formalism (called symbolic object) of symbolic data analysis. In our process, we take into account data from tables together with additional knowledge such as taxonomies. To describe each group, we perform a generalization step and a specialization one. Final descriptions are based on the notion of homogeneity within a group and they minimize a volume criterion.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126379912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
