Thus a concept for a load-dependent and application-specific migration of data is introduced which takes into consideration the number and sort of accesses to the data. The main part of the migration method is a distribution function, which generates an optimal distribution of data on the databases according to the defined aims. It uses all information of the profile of accesses and evaluates this information with the help of several decision parameters of different priority. A quick reaction on changes in the profile of accesses is guaranteed by a cycle protocol, which consists of three parallelly running phases with a sort of pipeline structure.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127770965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objects are no longer modified directly in the public database. Each user has a private workspace and his/her tasks are performed in the workspace. When the tasks are done, the user checks in modified objects in the public database. They introduce several classes of long duration locks in order to allow users to lock objects for a long time. A composite object, version, versionable object, or simple object may be the granularity of a checkout operation. They effectively maintain the version derivation graphs in a public database and workspaces and manage checkouts of composite objects.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127404713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve new tools for efficiently managing these large data banks, it is not enough to represent the structure of documents in a standard format. To classify and represent properties of these publications are also important considerations. We apply an extended object oriented model to represent periodicals. The model focuses on the most advanced features of this kind of data: document structure of composition and temporal properties and behaviour. With so much information in a coherent model, we expect to contribute to the development of powerful new retrieval tools. The main advantages of our model are that: it reflects a document's identity at the same time as it defines various kinds of relationships between them; it provides flexibility in document structure and data types; and it allows one to consider documents at various levels of abstraction.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121580262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The user, a researcher or a scholar, may formulate queries, no matter how complex they are, aided by a friendly windowing interface. To achieve this purpose, he is able to define an appropriate data classification developing an impossible-to-foresee research strategy. In order to analyse the data, the system provides a set of relational-like operations. A sample of the possible applications of our approach to problems such as research analyses and planning in the environment of cultural institutions (museums, art exhibitions, and so on) has been shown.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131847759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communicating versions between developers means passing them through the global repository and checking consistency. Passing incomplete objects or prototypes is not supported by such databases. The authors suggest that visibility be linked to consistency and that there be arbitrary levels of visibility/consistency in a design database. They present an engineering repository, defined by a database scheme and a set of transactions allowing for maximum concurrency of development. According to different consistency assertions the design objects are arranged in a tree-like structure with the root corresponding to the globally visible, consistent repository and the nodes corresponding to local workspaces.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"401 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115991036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some developed algorithms meet special needs of real-time databases. These algorithms however, deal with temporal execution aspects, often disregarding semantics of data usage which could further improve performance. One such algorithm is speculative concurrency control, which uses execution redundancy by forking to improve performance. A simplified version of this algorithm has been implemented as a concurrency controller for an object oriented real-time database. The paper describes the experiences with the implementation, explains the reasons for only implementing a subset, and indicates required extensions to implement the complete algorithm. Also provided is a theoretical evaluation of the algorithm performance and scalability.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114328727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a major difficulty in using multiple disks for the support of OODBs is that an object may reference or be referenced by other objects through associations. This requires that the search of objects be sequential through the association links, which is sometimes referred to as the navigational search of objects in an object base. This restriction limits the concurrency in object retrieval and invalidates the use of multiple disks. Techniques such as clustering/indexing of objects do not help to resolve this problem. By using a two-phase query processing strategy previously proposed by them, objects of interest can be accessed in parallel from multiple disk. The aim of the paper is to design a probability-based evaluation model to estimate the performance of using multiple disks and to compare it with a single disk system. The result shows that the scheme is viable and a significant improvement is achieved while multiple disks are used.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114521091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interoperability among those systems is one of the major topics of the digital library community. The paper presents the HyNeSS model and its query interface for that purpose. The HyNeSS model integrates the entity relationship model and predicate logic, and provides a universal and formal expression for network-oriented data. The authors have developed a prototype system of the HyNeSS database system. The query interface is universal in the sense that it does not depend to any particular database schema. It loads the schema information from a remote HyNeSS database system and adapts itself to the given schema. On the submission of a query, the composed expression is converted into a declarative query expression based on predicate logic. It provides a universal expression to retrieve and identify objects in heterogeneous distributed environment.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115155141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the performance of a simple modification to the basic two phase commit protocol called Prudent Two Phase Commit protocol. The protocol gives the transaction a second chance before it decides to abort it. This prudent approach prevents a transaction from aborting in case of transient communication failures and hence improves system performance and reliability. To measure the performance of this protocol, we simulate a distributed database system. The performance of this simulated distributed system is measured while using the Prudent, Basic, and Optimistic Two Phase Commit protocols. The results of this simulation study are presented with a discussion and interpretation of the graphs generated by the simulation. The results confirm the improvement in system performance with the Prudent Two Phase Commit Protocol.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116065728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These research domains have become very closely related. The support of derivations in current active databases suffers from many semantic and technical problems. Active rules in their ECA (Event Condition Action) form are event oriented whereas derivations are naturally data oriented. Deductive rules are well adapted to relational databases, but their integration within the object oriented model does not always have successful results. Procedural attachment may be considered as both a deductive and active process, but it uses an imperative language to derive attributes. We try to focus on the use of active rules to derive attributes in an object oriented model. We give our approach for the support of deductions in a declarative assertion language and their processing in an active way. We propose a declarative derivation approach integrated within an object oriented model.","PeriodicalId":438695,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 7th International Conference and Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications: DEXA 96","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128165988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
