This paper is trying to offer answers to questions about the impact of the pandemic on the level of stress, anxiety, depression and life satisfaction of the student population. The survey was conducted as a cross-sectional study. The studied population comprised students of the Faculty of Mechanical and Civil Engineering in Kraljevo and the Kraljevo Medical College. The standardised depression, anxiety and stress self-assessment scale - DASS-21 was used as the survey instrument. The largest number of students felt the fear of one of their relatives getting infected (80.2%), that is of endangering their family (77.6%). Approximately one in three students felt the fear of death (34.4%), the fear of getting infected (29.7%) and of ending up in hospital (36.5%). One in six respondents felt vulnerable during the state of emergency (16.3%), and one in ten felt very vulnerable (9.8%). 14.6% of them stated that the epidemic had affected their student responsibilities a lot, and 22.3% of students expressed the negative impact of isolation on them. The results of our study indicate a high percentage of reported symptoms of stress (44.2%), anxiety (47.1%) and depression (34.9%) among the student population. Pandemic conditions have led to considerable changes in the daily life of all people, while the impact of the pandemic and the consequences that are yet to emerge still cannot be fully understood. That is why it is of utmost importance to take care of the mental health of those who are in a sensitive period of life.","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"90 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129204554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It occurs in both children and adults, and leads to a high risk of vision problems if not treated in time. Capacities of the Serbian healthcare system face significant challenges in providing surgical treatment for strabismus. This study was conducted as a combined, quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional study from early May to late June 2019 in secondary and tertiary healthcare institutions with ophthalmological organisational units. Out of 46 healthcare institutions that met the criteria for inclusion, 30 submitted the requested data. These 30 institutions employed 211 ophthalmology specialists, of which 14 (7%) stated that they had been trained to perform surgical treatment of strabismus, while two (1%) specialists were currently undergoing training. Of the overall number of healthcare institutions encompassed by this research, eight (27%) were providing these surgeries. Thirteen (43%) healthcare institutions had an adequate number of anaesthesiologists for their healthcare level. Eleven (37%) healthcare institutions listed a lack of adequately equipped facilities to perform surgical treatment of strabismus, i.e., lack of a dedicated operating room. Out of the total number of healthcare institutions, four (13%) had an adequate set of instruments for surgical strabismus treatment. Seven (23%) healthcare institutions listed that they were able to procure the necessary consumables for this type of surgery without hindrance. The healthcare system in the Republic of Serbia must be empowered in the segments that have been recognised as weak links in the provision of surgical treatment of strabismus. This means, primarily, educating ophthalmology specialists to perform these surgeries and referring doctors to specialisations in the field of anaesthesiology, reanimation and intensive care.","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127865829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite this progress, AMI is still the main cause of mortality both globally, and in Serbia. Social-demographic characteristics and co-morbidities of patients are linked to increased risk from death and repeat AMI. This paper analyses the long-term survival of patients with AMI depending on their risk factors, clinical characteristics and lifestyle. This study looked at the survival of 135 patients who had suffered AMI and were first hospitalized at the Emergency Centre of the University Clinical Centre of Serbia in Belgrade, in its coronary unit, in the period 2002-2006. Their survival was tracked until 1 September 2011, and continued to 1 January 2020 by phone, to ascertain whether the patients were still living or had passed away. The data on patient characteristics were collected using a questionnaire. The results were analysed using the ch2 test, Kaplan-Meier curve and multivariate Cox regression model. During the average follow-up period of 164 months, 60 patients (48.0%) had passed away. Patients who survived were statistically significantly younger, their frequency of diabetes mellitus (DM) was statistically significantly lower and they were statistically significantly less likely to have lived alone. According to the results of the multivariate Cox regression model, the independent predictors of long-term all-cause mortality after an AMI were: living alone, DM in personal medical history and older age. Adequate measures of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, as well as social support, may have an effect on the length of patient survival following an AMI.","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121158300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the term \"addiction\" has historically been associated with the pathological use of psychoactive substances, research over the past few decades indicates that various behaviors are also part of the spectrum of addiction. Accordingly, addictions to psychoactive substances and behavioral addictions overlap in several segments, but there are also certain differences between them. Taking into account these statements, the subject of this research was the analysis of the personality structure of Internet addicted adolescents, aimed at identifying if there are specific differences in certain personality dimensions between adolescents addicted to the Internet (reference group) and adolescents who abuse psychoactive substances, as well as in adolescents from the non-clinical population. The methodology was applied to a sample consisting of 125 respondents of both genders, aged 13 to 24, of whom 27 were from the clinical group of Internet addicts, 24 from the clinical group of psychoactive substance addicts, and 74 from the non-clinical population. A questionnaire was used for assessing Internet addiction (Internet Addiction Test) and a questionnaire for assessing the personality of adolescents (Belgrade Personality Inventory of Adolescents). The results indicate that we cannot talk about a specific profile that distinguishes respondents who are addicted to the Internet. However, despite the limitations, significant differences in certain dimensions indicate certain deviations between groups of adolescents with Internet addiction, addiction to psychoactive substances and the non-clinical population. Low research curiosity, poorly developed perseverance and goal orientation play a significant role in the aetiopathogenesis of Internet addicts. We conclude that the obtained results can have a significant role in solving the current dilemma whether Internet addiction disorder should be considered a primary addiction disorder or a secondary disorder due to other psychiatric diseases.","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"8 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113933604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was the first comprenhensive national study that assessed drinking water quality and sanitary conditions in Serbia. This national survey was undertaken in rural areas of the Republic of Serbia in 2016 and on the basis of the WHO rapid assessment methodology. For the purpose of this study, three Broad Areas (BA) covering 26 districts were created, based on geographical and socio-economic characteristics of the districts: Vojvodina with 7 districts as BA1, West Serbia, Šumadija and Belgrade with 9 districts as BA2 and South and East Serbia and Kosovska Mitrovica with 10 districts as BA3. A total of 1168 piped water supply systems were inspected, sampled and analysed for selected microbiological and physical-chemical parameters. This study summarized the differences in compliance rate for microbiological and each physical-chemical parameter and sanitary scores between Broad Areas. This comparative analysis of small piped drinking water supply systems showed notable, significant differences in drinking water quality and identified sanitary risks between the selected areas.","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130913999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Balint education has shown excellent results for physicians of all medical specialties as well as for other healthcare professionals and associates (psychologists, special pedagogues, social workers, special education teachers, nurses) who want to improve their relationships with health care users, and it is especially helpful in the acquisition of skills necessary for working with \"problem clients\" as well as in the prevention of job burnout syndrome in healthcare professionals. The primary objective of this paper was to offer and present arguments on the importance of educational programs applying the Balint methodology, which is focused on the client-therapist relationship, and founded on psychoanalytic ideas. The secondary objective was to enhance awareness of the exceptional importance of the client-therapist relationship, which is of major therapeutic interest and essential to any treatment, and through participation and work in Balint groups, group members learn to understand and skillfully utilize the professional client/patient relationship. With its specific goals and methods, the education is beneficial to therapists, clients as well as health care institutions. A literature review was carried out regarding the previously published studies on the development, growth, and work dynamics of Balint groups and therapists i.e., counselors. Special attention was given to the discussions included in these studies, pertaining to the consequences of weaknesses, but also of strengths in the performance of Balint therapists. Attention was also paid to the issues related to the insufficient number of Balint groups and therapists that apply this practice in education, as well as to the support and assistance they are provided in regard to their work. The efficiency of Balint groups was also considered, including their contribution published in the literature, in addition to recommendations for overcoming this problem in the future. The founding father of this method, Michael Balint, a psychiatrist, started a training program for general practitioners (family physicians) more than 70 years ago, since he believed that they were specially overworked and burdened with a large number of patients and that improving doctors' knowledge in the field of psychology would facilitate their work. Later, this training program expanded, becoming more and more present in other branches of medicine. Today, Balint education is an integral part of medical studies and specialist training in psychiatry, gynecology, endocrinology, and family medicine in many European countries. Balint groups are intended f","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124418733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the analysis, a new periodization is proposed comprising three distinctive periods of chemsex: the period of chemsex as a \"novelty\" (2013-2016), marked by online activities in selling drugs on gay dating sites and recruiting participants for the parties online; the period of \"consolidation\" of chemsex scene marked by regular consumption and commodification of chemsex drugs among gay men (2017-2018); and the period of \"developed chemsex\" culture in Serbia (2019-onward) with the rising numbers of chemsex participants, and increased demand for chemsex support services. The analysis also argues how such periodization is not clear-cut, and how each period overlaps with other periods. This article draws on three research projects - the first is a research into gay virtual intimacy in Serbia (2014-2018), during which data were generated and collected using the virtual ethnography methodology of gay dating apps; the second, a research project \"Confessions of a drug dealer\" which comprises three follow-up interviews undertaken between 2016-2018 with a drug dealer in Belgrade, and the third one - an in-depth interview, conducted in 2020, with a chemsex activist who previously took part in chemsex parties, and now provides peer-support to chemsex participants/users. Epidemiology of infection and clinical manifestations of the disease vary in different parts of the world. In the past, this disease was among the leading causes of child mortality and occurred in massive outbreaks. Developed at the end of the 19th century, diphtheria antitoxin (DAT) played a key role in the history of public health and vaccinology prior to the diphtheria-tetanus toxoid and combined vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis with the acellular pertussis component (DTaP). One of the more significant events from the past that showcase the importance of DAT was the dire need for its use during the diphtheria outbreak in the town of Nome, Alaska. It was January, 1925, when Doctor Curtis Welch declared a diphtheria outbreak and sent a radio telegram to all major cities in Alaska, as well as to the US Public Health Service in Washington, D.C., begging for help. Despite the quarantine, the disease spread, and the only available serum supplies were discovered at a hospital in the small town of Anchorage, hundreds of kilometres away from Nome. The serum was delivered from Anchorage by train to the Nenana village, where the nearest railway station was located, and from there teams of sledding dogs were organised to take the serum to Nome in a relay dash. They needed to cross 1085 kilometers as fast as possible, in dire weather conditions. The teams took over from each other, pushing the limits of their endurance. The musher, the dog sled driver, had to be prepared for these conditions. All the dogs on the team had significant roles, but the lead dog was the key, and he had to be resourceful, strong and well trained. It took five and a half days (127 and a half hours), 20 people and more than 150 dogs for the so-called \"Great race of mercy\". A coordinated emergency delivery of this serum, thanks to the sled relay accomplished by Alaskan malamutes and Siberian huskies and their mushers in extreme weather conditions in order to save lives, left a great legacy in the history of vaccinology and public health. The most difficult parts of the relay were led by Siberian huskies, Balto and Togo and their mushers, Gunnar Kaasen and Leonhard Seppala, but it should be noted that most of the mushers were native Alaskans, Athabascans. This race, where the dogs pulled the sleds carrying the precious serum represents a dynamic illustration of the contribution of a non-human species to mass immunization in the history of vaccinology. Many dogs died during this relay, while their mushers suffered severe frostbite due to extremely low temperatures. Every single individual on our planet (both human and animal) plays a part, the significance of which should not be forgotten, in the historical chain of survival and not giving up the goal of improving the life of every living creature, while at the ","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125215654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given that Europe has a quarter of all cancer cases and less than 10% of the world's population, it is obvious that cancer poses a huge burden in the entire European region. A comparative analysis of the incidence of malignant tumours in Serbia and European countries in 2018 showed that men in Serbia most often suffered from malignant tumours of the prostate, lungs and bronchus, colon and rectum, while in women, malignant tumours were most often localized in the breast, lungs and bronchus, colon and rectum. Women in Europe most often suffered from malignant tumours of the breast, colon and rectum, and lungs and bronchus, while they most often died from the same tumours as the women in our country. Compared to the inhabitants of the European region, the population of Serbia has a higher incidence of morbidity and mortality from all leading cancers; exceptions can be observed in the structure of new patients with malignant prostate tumours, women with newly discovered breast cancers and men who died from liver cancer. For the majority of malignancy sites, the risk of cancer in Serbia is estimated as \"moderate\", and \"low\" for malignant prostate tumours. However, the observed increase in incidence for the most common malignancies could, in the next two decades, bring Serbian citizens into the ranks of European countries with a high risk of disease. Throughout Europe, the burden of cancer puts pressure on national health and social protection systems, state budgets and affects productivity and economic growth. National campaigns for health promotion and prevention of risk factors that are responsible for the occurrence of the most common malignant tumours and other non-communicable diseases, early detection and implementation of screening programs for malignant tumours, are the basis of the cancer control strategy, both in the old continent as a whole, and in Serbia.","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121084591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most significant risk factors for CNCD development are smoking, hypertension, hypercholes-terolaemia, alcohol consumption, obesity, poor diet and lack of physical activity. Assessment of prevalence and distribution of risk factors relat-ed to chronic noncommunicable diseases in the population of women of Central Serbia and defining the needs for preventive activities are the main objectives of this study. Cross-sectional study was conducted using a sample of 1182 women in their reproductive period (15-49 years of age) from Central Serbia, in the period from April 2019 to November 2021. The study was conducted by teachers and students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University in Kragujevac using the methodology and tools of the STEP-wise Approach to Noncommunicable Diseases Risk Factor Surveillance of the World Health Organisation (STEPS) with the support of the Ministry without portfolio charged with demographics and popula-tion policy of the Republic of Serbia. Commercial, standard SPSS soft-ware package version 18.0 (The Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS Inc, version 18.0, Chicago, IL)) was used for statistical calculations. In our study, 62.5% of the women consumed tobacco prod-ucts each day,while 68.5% had consumed alcohol in the last 12 months. A quarter of the respondents (27.9%) consumed fruit every day of the week, and a little under a half (43.2%) consumed vegetables every day. In addition, 40.1% of the women claimed that they added salt to their food before even tasting it, and one fifth said that they engaged in at least 10 continual minutes of high-intensity physical exercise (fitness, recreation, sports) in their free time. In conclusion, risk factors for CNCD exist among the women in Central Serbia, so it is necessary to undertake appropriate preventative measures.","PeriodicalId":438201,"journal":{"name":"Glasnik javnog zdravlja","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126043912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
