Its healing properties are attributed to thiosulfinates, compounds formed through an enzymatic reaction when garlic cloves are crushed. One of the most prominent thiosulfinate found in garlic is diallyl thiosulfinate or allicin. \u0000The condition in this research mimics Malaysian climate conditions. This allows allicin to be studied and characterized for its uses in the local agricultural sector as potential urea inhibitor. A spectophotometric method is used in this research to quantify allicin found in garlic extract. L-cysteine is used to react with allicin in garic extract with the knowledge that one molecule of allicin reacts rapidly with two molecules of cysteine to form two molecules of S-allyl mercaptocysteine. 5,5’-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) is added to the mixture so that spectrophotometrically active 2-nitro-5-thiobenzoate (NTB) is formed after residual cysteine reacts with DTNB. Quantification of allicin is done at 30°C with garlic extract concentration ranging from 0.005 g/mL to 0.03 g/mL. This is followed by tests on allicin stability at pH 4 – 8 at 30°C and effects of temperature on allicin from 30°C to 85°C.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125111849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we demonstrated that a novel AMPK activator, ENERGI-F704, dose-dependently activated AMPK in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The pharmacological AMPK inhibitor, compound C, abolished the phosphorylation of threonine 172 residue on AMPK induced by ENERGI-F704. Importantly, ENERGI-F704 treatment did not affect HUVECs viability at the tested concentration. It was also observed that ENERGI-F704 significantly reduced the expression of inflammation cytokine, IL-6, in the high glucose cultured HUVECs during the long culture period. Furthermore, ENERGI-F704 suppressed the high glucose induced monocytotic adhesion to HUVECs. Collectively, our data demonstrated that ENERGI-F704 is of use in the application of attenuating the high glucose induced chronic inflammation in endothelial cells. ","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123600346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cardiotocogram (CTG) analysis consists in identifying some patterns associated to fetal activity in order to detect potential fetal pathologies. Several automatic classification methods have been already tested on CTG data sets, while a few feature selection (FS) methods have been considered. The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of FS on the performance of a naïve Bayes classifier for FHR patterns and fetal states. We empirically compare the performance of several models using four different FS methods (Correlation-based, ReliefF, Information Gain, and Mutual Information). We find that ReliefF yields to a better performance for fetal state classification, while no FS method worth the effort for FHR pattern classification. ","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122346836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four diffident computational protocols were evaluated on reproducing the relative binding free energies of the wild type PDZ and its five mutants. The protocol of MM-GB/SA in combination with normal mode analysis (NMA), which has a correlation coefficient square of 0.84, apparently outperforms the others especially for the two MM-PB/SA-based protocols. Free energy decomposition was also performed in order to identify the hot spots that contribute significantly to the binding. ","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128375439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the biotechnological process, ferulic acid was commonly used as a substrate and employs microorganisms as a biocatalyst. In this study, the potential of three white rot fungi- Ganoderma mastoporum, Ganoderma australe and Trametes pavonia - isolated from the fruiting-body of the polypore mushroom and two strains of commercial mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum and Schizophyllum commune ) were investigated for their ability to convert ferulic acid into its metabolites using GC-MS. The results showed that G. lucidum, S. commune and T. pavonia were able to convert ferulic acid to 4-vinyl guaiacol as a major degradation product, while the extract of G. australe and G. mastoporum grown in the same medium were found to obtain vanillin as a major component. High frequency multiple shoot induction was achieved from nodal segments collected from elite genotype on Murashige and Skoog’s (MS) medium supplemented with 4.4 µM Benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 1.16 µM Kinetin (Kn). The size of explant and season greatly influenced the frequency of bud break. Rooting posed a major problem to be worked out in this particular species. Best rooting response was observed on 9.80 µM of Indole- 3 Butyric acid (IBA) with 60 ± 14.1 % rooting. In vitro raised plants were successfully acclimatized and established in the field conditions where they exhibited normal growth. In a bid to ascertain genetic fidelity, DNA was extracted by CTAB method and samples were analysed in 1.8% agarose gel electrophoresis. In the present study no variation was reported among the in vitro raised progeny and the mother plant in the banding profiles generated by the total of fifteen Random Amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) markers. Hence, molecular analysis confirmed that these plants were genetically similar and can be used as elite plants.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122667470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the proliferative capacity of Acacia Honey (AH) on rabbit CEC via assessment on morphology, proliferation, cell cycle, gene and protein expressions.The optimal dose of AH in basal medium (BM) and complete cornea medium (CCM) was identified via MTT assay. CEC cultured in both media supplemented with 0.025% AH showed optimal proliferative capacity compared to the control. There were no abnormal changes in morphology and cell cycle analysis. Gene and protein expression of CK3 was increased in the CEC cultured with 0.025% AH in both media. CEC cultured in media supplemented with 0.025% AH promotes proliferation while retaining its normal morphology, cell cycle, gene and protein expressions. These promising results serve as an impetus in realizing the proliferative potential of AH in promoting the initial step of corneal wound healing. ","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133344377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, advances in image analysis and statistics have resulted to highly quantitative descriptions of detailed variations. To be able to describe detailed variations and to understand the human face of tribes practicing consanguineous marriages like the Sama-Banguingui tribe, landmark-based geometric morphometrics was used. Selected purebreed individuals (25 males and 21 females) of the tribe participated in the study. Face images were landmarked using the 28 anatomical landmarks defined in this study. Relative warps scores generated were used for the analysis of shape variations. Visualization of variations was done using histograms and boxplots. Results showed minor differences in the shapes of the whole face in RW2 and RW3 but not in RW1, RW4, RW5 and RW6 where variations observed were not significantly different. The similarity in the facial characters within and between sexes observed in this study could be attributed to common ancestry and possibly due to consanguinity. This study have shown that the tools of geometric morphometrics can be used for detailed quantification of variations in shapes of morphological structures. ","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"282 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122915278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Enterococci, on the contrary are associated with biofilm formation on medical devices which lead to devastating infections. This study was conducted to investigate the inhibitory effect of honey on established biofilm and prevention of biofilm formation. The biofilms of Enterococcus spp. (ATCC 19433, ATCC 29212, LMG 16192 and LMG 16216) were cultivated in microtitre plates with the treatment of different types of honey (Malaysian Gelam honey and Manuka honey (UMF 10 and 15)). The estimation of biofilm biomass extension was determined by measuring absorbance at 570 nm wavelength. It was found that Manuka honey UMF 15 was the most effective in reducing established biofilm biomass as compared to Malaysian Gelam honey. Nevertheless, Malaysian Gelam honey was found to be effective in preventing biofilm formation of Enterococcus spp. as compared to Manuka honey. In brief, Malaysian Gelam honey is effective to prevent enterococcal biofilm fomation whereas Manuka honey can be recommended as a potential therapeutic agent for biofilm related enterococcal infections. ","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127727431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
