Ten (10) hedgehogs were used. The animals were euthanized and GIT organs were exteriorized for gross morphometric studies’ Tissue samples were collected from the GIT segments, processed using the routine paraffin method and stained using the Hematoxylin & Eosin stain. This study observed a remarkable conformational difference between the male and female African white breasted Hedgehog, with the female having signifi- cantly larger body weight, tongue and gastrointestinal biometry as compared to the males. Its stomach was a C – shaped saccular sac. The intestines were straight and cylindrical, except the jejunum which was tortuous. The large intestine had a colon but lacked a caecum. Histologically, the esopha- gus, stomach, duodenum, jejunum and colon all had four layers: muco- sae, submucosae, muscularis and serosa. The esophageal mucosae had keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. The duodenal and jejunal mucosae had villi and crypts of Lieberkuhn, lined with simple colum- nar epithelium. Villi were absent in the colon. Mucosal glands were seen in the stomach but were absent in the other parts of the GIT. The tunica muscularis in all the segments of the GIT had inner circular, middle oblique and outer longitudinal smooth muscles, except the esophagus which had only inner circular and outer longitudi- nal layers. It was concluded that with the exception of the caecum, the GIT of the African white breasted Hedge- hog is grossly relatively similar to those of other monogastric mammals and shows Histomorphologic varia- tions across its component organs. Thus, further Histochemical and Immunohistochemical analyses of the organs are recommended","PeriodicalId":437076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Anatomy","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116044816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was aimed to describe the architectural orientation of the extrinsic lingual muscles for each species. As well as statistical data between the tongue and extrinsic lingual muscles. The work declared the properties of potent tongue which allowed the cattle and buffalo to perform their behavioral prehension of food. The study described the extrinsic lingual muscles and spotted a light on the role of the geniohyoid muscle on the tongue. The work concluded that the tongue of cattle was stronger than that of buffalo while both were able to depend on their tongue for food prehension. On the other hand, the tongue of camel was found to be adapted for intraoral function.","PeriodicalId":437076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Anatomy","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127736853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cadavers of three sheep, one goat and three horses were fixed with a solution of 2% formaldehyde, 30% ethanol, and 20% polyethylene glycol 400. At time intervals tissue samples of; skeletal muscle, lung and intestine were analyzed for cultivable aerobic bacteria, anaerobic bacteria and fungi. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel cadaver fixative solution having a 2% formaldehyde concentration. Visual examination of each fixed cadaver’s skeletal muscles and visceral organs showed that these had retained a relatively natural appearance. No yeast or mould was cultured. Anaerobic bacteria namely Clostridium sporogenes and C. tyrobutyricum were isolated from the muscles of wo sheep. The aerobic bacterium Bacillus licheniformis was cultivated from the colon and duodenum of all three horses 40 days post fixation.","PeriodicalId":437076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Anatomy","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114550289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work was carried out on 116 rabbit embryos and fetuses of both sexes. The specimens were obtained, from 14 normal and apparently healthy adult female rabbit. At days (D) 11 there was a cleared invagination on the thickened epithelium of the nasal placode as a nasal pit. The latter had an oval in outline at 12 D and it formed the nasal sac. At 13 D the nasal sac had given rise to the primitive nasal cavity. Its external opening will differentiate to form the primitive nostril, occluded by nasal plug. At 14 D the lining epithelium of the lateral nasal wall was of variable thickness of stratified cuboidal type of epithelium. At 16 D there were a clear some cellular apoptosis in center of nasal plug. At 18-20 D the center of the nasal plug was dissoluted and the nostril was begun to canalize. At 22 D the nostril was lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium especially at the rostral part of nasal vestibule and the nasal vestibule was lined by thick keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. At 30 D the nostrils appeared as oblique slit like opening similar to that of newly born rabbit.","PeriodicalId":437076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Anatomy","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122468593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The organs of 16 birds (eight laughing doves and eight Japanese quails) were used. The length of the oropharyngeal roof was nearly equal in both birds; it was divided into oral and pharyngeal roofs. The oral roof (palate) was narrow elongated triangular shaped in LD and wide triangular shaped in JQ, and the oral roof (palate) was longer in LD than that of JQ. The ratio of the oral roof (palate) to the total length of the oro- pharynx was 86.36% in LD and 72.82% in JQ. The choanal slit constituted a nearly same percentage of the length of the palate which was 49-50% while to the total length of the oropharynx was 43.19% in LD and 36.75% in JQ. The line of separation between narrow and wide parts of the choanal slit demarcated by caudolaterally directed papillae and mucosal elevation in LD and by a transverse row of V-shaped papillae in JQ. The edges of the rostral narrow part bear small sized wide-spaced papillae having serrated appearance, while the edges of the wide part were smooth in LD. In JQ 3 transverse rows of papillae and one transverse mucosal fold were presented around the choanal slit. The lamina propria of the palate consisted of dense connective tissue, rich in several types of sensory corpuscles; Merkel's corpuscles were the majority of the sensory corpuscles in LD. Herpst corpuscles with variable sizes and shapes were the majority of sensory corpuscles in JQ. Submucosa of the palate on each side of the choanal slit consisted of 2 groups of palatine salivary glands; medial and lateral groups in JQ and few lobules of the medial salivary glands were observed in LD.","PeriodicalId":437076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Veterinary Anatomy","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133402847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
