Far away rural areas are having dispersed loads in nature and hence increased transmission and distribution losses. Thus increasing electrical demand drives the attention towards available and feasible choices of distributed generation. India being a tropical country, solar is the natural choice of sustainable alternative. An attempt has been made in this paper to assess the issues of rural electrification India and presizing of distributed solar generation.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131312437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several factors such as geography, infrastructure, and population influence the information gathering process. The task is particularly complex when disasters strike a shanty town. A shanty town terrain is characterized by its high population density, considerable level of under-development, and poor infrastructure. Mobile Data Collection agents (MDCs) can be assigned with the task of data collection in the aftermath of a disaster. In this paper, we study the difficulty of data gathering process using two movement models, Path Type Based Movement and Path Memory Based Movement in combination with data hand-off strategies No Hand-off, Superior-Only Hand-off and Superior-Peer Hand-off. We use the metrics such as percentage data collected, percentage way coverage, and the number of inter-MDC meetings for analyzing the performance of MDCs in the data gathering process. The low values of data collected and way coverage show the difficulty in obtaining disaster-data from a complex shanty town terrain.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127928416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Resource Provisioning is one of the biggest challenging tasks in the cloud infrastructure, due to the dynamic nature of cloud resources and on demand user application requirements. However, in the cloud infrastructure, failure is one of the most essential factors that plays a main role in the completion of jobs within the user-specified deadline and minimize the execution cost. The proposed failure-aware resource provisioning mechanism involves three stages: (1) Predict the availability of cloud resources (2) Cluster the cloud resources based on the availability (3) Optimal Selection of Clustered resources. The proposed approach is integrated with the Cloud Broker to allocate the cloud resources for provisioning in an optimal manner. It is evaluated by performing the various simulation experiments. The simulation results prove the effectiveness in terms of makespan, execution cost and failure rate of the jobs.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127728352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most difficult is Parkinson's disease, which is caused by the death of dopamine cells in the midbrain. Among other symptoms, Parkinson's patients usually suffer from difficulty walking. They commonly experience a phenomenon called \"freezing\" in which they don't have the ability to initiate motion to produce functional movement. Given sufficient external stimuli the same patient will be able to overcome the problem and carry out productive movements. This can then lead to them walking forward. Standard visual cues may include lines of paint or tape on the ground, but these have limitations. We have created a walker which uses a laser to project a line onto the ground in front of the patient. The patient can then step over this line. As they move the walker forward, the same stimuli is presented automatically, enabling the patient to overcome the freezing and maintain walking. Our design is effective, safe, energy conserving, low cost and can enable the mobility of Parkinson's patients and prevent the disease from reaching its extreme stage.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"256 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114323205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With advancements in technology, the complaint registration systems have evolved in different ways to simplify the task of registering as well as addressing the complaints. This research paper presents the architecture of a GPS based Complaint Redressal System (GPSCRS). The complaint is registered via a mobile application. Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor present in smart mobile devices is used to determine the exact location of the complaint. The area of the complaint is automatically detected, and the complaint information is sent over the internet to a central server. The complaints are then plotted on a map in the web interface.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115329590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, there were many research studies conducted related to human-machine systems available to help visually challenged people to reassure themselves to the outside world as normal individuals. We also propose a novel methodology to explore the uses of multimedia tools using Image Sensor, Camera, Laser Sensor, Inductive Proximity Sensor and Hand-held device to develop a ubiquitous environment to model the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) system. This methodology embraces the advantage of present Smartphone technology to help the people who are visually challenged from birth and also the aged persons who suffer from either full or partial vision loss. The newly introduced features like motion detection and feature extraction capabilities of SWAPN are assessed by realizing the implementation of machine-to-machine features for the modest usage. We have also inherited the usage of social networking for the visually challenged. Often more useful features like warning detection systems which notify the user the present weather conditions and inform for sudden changes in temperatures also been included.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122617978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It uses a piezoelectric actuator that helps in direct oscillation of the stapes with the arrival of sound wave resulting in sound demonstration much superior to that of conventional hearing aid. The hydraulic amplification of the piezoelectric device generates sufficient stapes displacement and an ICP sensor detects corresponding sound pressure level. Additionally, in order to avoid the unwanted interference of the incoming sound frequency with the vibrating frequency of the piezoelectric element, the later is kept within acceptable limits by resonant frequency bandwidth control technique. Owing to its micro power consumption, the proposed design undoubtedly has the potential to replace the battery powered conventional hearing aids, thereby diminishing the recurring losses and making the system cost-effective.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123589666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learning is built in directly into the consumer's behaviour so that he can decide and act in his own interest for optimal scheduling. The consumer evolves by interacting with the influencing variables of the environment. We consider a grid-connected solar microgrid system which contains a local consumer, a renewable generator (solar photovoltaic system) and a storage facility (battery). A model-free Reinforcement Learning algorithm, namely three-step-ahead Q-learning, is used to optimize the battery scheduling in dynamic environment of load and available solar power. Solar power and the load feed the reinforcement learning algorithm. By increasing the utility of battery and the solar power generator, an optimal performance of solar microgrid is achieved. Simulation results using real numerical data are presented for a reliability test of the system. The uncertainties in the solar power and the load are taken into account in the proposed control framework.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126434579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dispersed generation based on renewable energy (RE) sources addresses the issues related with reliability, voltage profile management and associated economic aspects. Micro grids help in exploiting locally available RE sources, which are also the fundamental units of the smart grid architecture. However, available energy potential of the region and seasonal variability assessment is the primary step to map the viable regions for power harvesting. The present study analyses the distributed energy harvesting option for southern states of India by assessing the taluk wise solar and wind energy potential. Power density assessment and variability analysis essentially helps for the investors to architect the generation plants and to optimize the higher energy yielding regions.
