Battery power of sensor nodes is one of the important factors to consider in a wireless sensor system. Moreover, when such systems are deployed in remote environments for critical applications where the availability of electrical power is less, the factor presents a major constraint. Prior work has tackled this problem by introducing sleep, sense, transmit and receive states. Although most work employed these states in tree and cluster based networks they only incorporated at the leaf nodes. This paper introduces state transitions for cluster head nodes to further reduce energy. The algorithm basically combines data aggregation and state transition to improve the overall life time of the network. To validate the algorithm, we apply to a landslide monitoring and detection system and obtain 33% energy savings for leaf node and 30% energy saving for cluster head node when compared to naive algorithms that do not apply state transitions.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121590761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teachers are able to monitor the progress made by several students, irrespective of their learning abilities and attempt to channel all students towards a common learning goal. E-Learning systems today don't possess a monitoring component. Most approaches customize content to suit differing learning abilities, resulting in different learning goals. However, this study attempts to apply machine learning methods that customizes not the content, but the presentation of the content assuming almost common learning goals - just like how a teacher would modify the content presentation, if some aspects are not clear to students based on their feedback. The primary challenge towards developing such a monitoring system is to decide what aspects of the interaction are to be monitored and how these are to interpreted as feedback with actionable insights - that is, to decide the learning schema, and then apply learning algorithms to gauge the interest or disinterest of the learner in the content presented.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127859927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Early stage cancer cell detection is currently the need of the hour. In this paper we have demonstrated a 2-dimensional grating based photonic crystal based biosensor for complete analysis of normal healthy Lymphocyte cell and its components for early stage detection of cancer. Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method has been used for the analysis of the cell. MEEP and MATAB simulation tools have been used for modeling and designing of photonic crystal based sensor and the intensity levels of transmission and reflection spectrums have been observed. It has been observed from the band structure that for little change in refractive index (RI) there will be a significant shift in the frequency and hence it acts as a sensor. This indicates that it is highly sensitive for the change in refractive index and thus it can differentiate between different components of the Lymphocyte cell as well as normal and cancerous cell.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130565915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This concern is further increased in India, due to its large population of the unmanned railroad crossings. Almost 40% of the level crossings present in India are unmanned. Hence this calls for an efficient, robust and stable automatic gate closure system. This paper proposes an intelligent level crossing controller (ILC) from a new dimension altogether. This is an innovative approach which combines the use of GPS (global positioning system) tracking system and GSM (global system for mobile communication) modem to accomplish an efficient gate closing at the level crossings. Detectors are also placed on the railway tracks which sense the arrival and departure of the train and also forward this information to the subsequent crossings. These detectors are also interfaced with the controllers present in the train to activate the motors at the gate accordingly. The system has been simulated and the results showed that the system has high speed, stability, accuracy, robustness, and flexibility. This ILC has been designed such that it is easy to apply this controller under most kinds of situations, locations and tracks.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125603631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
