This turned down legitimate travelers. Many countries are in process of implementing electronic passports to travelers for travelling, automating passport verification process and increasing border security. The e-passport deploys two popular technologies: Radio frequency Identification (RFID) and Biometrics. Personal credentials and bearers biometric data is stored on RFID chip which is used in verification process by border security officers. The next generation of e-passports will implement more advanced cryptographic mechanisms, collectively known as Extended Access Control, and in particular a protocol referred to as Chip Authentication that protects an e-passport against cloning and transferability attacks. The Extended Access Control suite of protocols has found minor attention in the literature until now. The paper analyses the study of various technologies used in Epassport design. A cryptographic security analysis of the epassport using face fingerprint, palm print and iris biometric that are intended to provide improved security in protecting biometric information of the e-passport bearer. Together, RFID and biometric technologies promise to reduce fraud, ease identity checks, and enhance security. At the same time, these technologies raise new risks. We explore the privacy and security implications of this worldwide implementing next-generation authentication technology: e-passport. We describe privacy and security issues that apply to e-passports, and then analyze these issues in the context of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard for e-passports.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"85 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115052978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recognizing a particular object and placing it in the required position is a tiring work especially in the field of industry where in one has to sort a bulk of objects in quick time and also the weight is greater than what a human can carry. This is when automation plays a major role. In this paper we are considering all these factors along with the cost to make the process more efficient. We use Raspberry Pi, which is an open source Linux based board. Raspberry Pi has found its way in major in number of useful & versatile applications in robotic systems. But never the less this system is new & hence Latest Technology takes time to be uncovered. Therefore, not much articles are available, hence our goal will be to investigate its applicative and cost effective use as a robotic arm in Object Sorting. Thereby Revolutionizing Robotic Systems in Industrial manufacturing plants by making them cheaper, compact & along with the same reliability as that of a dedicated PC. Furthermore we make use of a camera module which captures the image of the object. This image is processed using GNU Octave to determine the color and the shape of the object. GNU Octave is an open source language similar to MATLAB and hence making it portable. All the processed information in Octave is than relayed to a microcontroller which in turn controls the movement of the robotic arm which will segregate the objects into its respective compartments. Here we sort objects of three different shapes and colors, i.e. Square, Circle and Triangle (As seen from the Top-View of a Cube, Sphere/Cylinder and Triangular-Prism aligned vertically) and RGB colors i.e. Red, Blue and Green respectively.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115053314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the human habitation, and the anthropogenic activities, large scale change in land use has affected the hydrologic regime across watersheds. The water resource availability in a catchment depends upon the integrity of the land use, terrain and meteorological parameters such as rainfall, temperature, etc. The land use of the catchment plays an important role in maintaining the water flow in the rivers or streams as either surface or subsurface runoff (Pipeflow and Baseflow), holding water in the sub strata's, recharging the aquifers and hence catering the water demands as per the human and environmental needs. The study was conducted in order to understand the dynamics of land use and its implication on the catchment capabilities in catering the demands of environment (forests), agriculture, domestic and livestock needs on Lakshmanatirtha catchment of the Cauvery river basin which has an area of 3969 km2. The land use assessment using remote sensing and GIS showed the catchment is dominated (61.94%) by agriculture and horticulture, followed by forests with as area of 14.3% followed by other land uses. The Ghats (uplands) of the catchment is dominated by forests where as the plains are with agriculture and horticulture activities. Hydrologic assessment is done using the land use and the meteorological data was carried out at watershed level. The assessment showed that out of five watersheds, four of the watersheds had very high deficiency of water for over 3 months, and one of the watersheds had no deficit. The deficiency of water indicated that the watersheds were not able cater the both the human and environmental needs but also the streams were devoid of water flow which explains the deficiency in maintaining ecological flow.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"2018 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114073989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of multi-pad electrode and multi-channel electrical stimulator based improve the effectiveness of conventional FES. Such a system consists of a multi-pad surface electrode and a matching multi-channel stimulator. This system will allow the targeting of motor neurons which activate muscle groups to produce corresponding functional movements of the hand. This paper presents our study on normal subjects to quantify the movement resulting from stimulation of electrodes spatially distributed around the forearm. The device was tested on four healthy subjects and the results show that multi-pad electrode provide desired amount of selectivity and can be used for generating functional grasp. The results also show that the effect of stimulation varies from person to person reflecting inters subject anatomical variability.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127859440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Convers[t]ation panel was developed as the result of a cross-cultural collaborative project conducted in Bangalore, India1 and Amsterdam, The Netherlands2. The need to bridge the gap in data regarding crimes against women was identified as a primary concern in building a strong case for the advocacy of change in government policy where required, as per the recommendations of Women's rights groups. A system of registering and compiling informal reports was decided as having the potential to provide an apt and functional solution to the above problem. Hence Convers[t]ation, an electronic panel positioned in public areas and usable even by semi/illiterate audiences was conceived to do the task. Convers[t]ation is designed to be accessible to a diverse audience in the Indian context; enabled by its simple input mechanism and comprehensive media of presentation. Discussions about the panel and its development are used to illustrate an interdisciplinary, dialogic approach to understand and grapple with the complexity of a wicked problem; namely that of freedom and mobility of women in public spaces in the Indian context. Following this, an attempt at aiding progress in the field by designing an electronic device to provide an E-service is detailed.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"443 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113999478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the oxygen is extracted from the ambient atmosphere, there is a chance for contamination. It results in poor performance of the cell due to oxygen starvation and catalyst poisoning. Through the measurement of carbon monoxide and oxygen concentrations and controlling the concentration of hydrogen fuel and the oxidant accordingly the probability of oxygen starvation as well as catalyst poisoning is reduced. This power source can be then used to power up portable electronic devices like wireless sensor nodes.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122724706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus inspired, we have developed a smart system which would be able to serve as best friend to the hearing and speech impaired person. The primary goal of this paper is to design and implement a low cost wired interactive glove, interfaced with a computer running MATLAB or Octave, with a high degree of accuracy for gesture recognition. The glove maps the orientation of the hand and fingers with the help of bend sensors, Hall Effect sensors and an accelerometer. The data is then transmitted to a computer using automatic repeat request (ARQ) as an error controlling scheme. The system is modeled for the differently abled section of the society to help convert sign language to a more human understandable form such as textual messages.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131627156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over 1.2 billion people do not have access to electricity which incudes over 550 million people in Africa and 300 million in India. Further to this situation, the report from International Energy Agency forecasts power generation from renewable energy sources to nearly triple from year 2010 to 2035 reaching 31%. Microgrid or Distributed Energy Island System plays a vital role to overcome these challenges. Microgrid, which comprises of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) serving few community loads, are key enabler for renewable integration. These systems also play a significant role in rural electrification. These systems can be operated in semiautonomous manner or in autonomous/islanding mode. Some of the operational scenarios in these systems are related to modernization of power systems and hence explorative. This leaves a huge potential for Industry and academia collaborative approach. The purpose of this study is to analyze the operational scenarios both existing or new and how the visualization tools and ecosystem play a major role in the direction of collaboration and optimization that leads to benefit the community in the future.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127382733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the existence of generators at all levels of the distribution system and two distinct operating modes, i.e. grid connected and islanded modes, the fault currents in a system vary substantially. With appropriate relay coordination they gain the ability to island generators and loads together. This has a potential to provide a higher local reliability than that provided by the power system as a whole. The protection scheme implemented addresses the existing protection challenges encountered due to the presence of both distributed generators and inverter interfaced distributed generators in the same system. The proposed protection scheme equipped with directional overcurrent relays is tested using ETAP on a microgrid that consists of distributed energy resources like photovoltaic arrays, wind, diesel generator and micro hydro turbine for various fault locations.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131470594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The daily electrical load profile in remote mountainous region of Himalayas shows vast difference in minimum and maximum load on the generator operated in isolated mode. Induction generators are most suitable types of generators for renewable energy conversion systems due to their advantages over conventional generators. The load on these generators has to be kept constant to maintain the voltage and frequency under permissible limits. Therefore under off-load conditions, the extra energy available can be utilized for other purposes such as operating water pump and other need based applications rather than wasting the energy in resistive dump load. In this paper, the potential benefits of using water pump as load under light/off-load conditions have been explored. The performance characteristics of isolated 3-φ SEIG are obtained using MATLAB-Simulink facility and the simulation model is based on the electrical loading pattern in mountainous terrain of Himalayas.","PeriodicalId":437025,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference - South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121387613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
