{"title":"Ageing and Care in Agnès Varda","authors":"S. Jordan","doi":"10.1093/fs/knad144","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1093/fs/knad144","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:This article analyses selected works of Agnès Varda as original contributions to cultural gerontology. It focuses on Varda's pronounced interest in older people throughout her career and explores how, in experimental portraits and self-portraits, she approaches ageing by harnessing surprising devices — temporal, spatial, aesthetic, haptic, and affective — to challenge ageism and assumptions of disability, and to encourage identification. The article pays particular attention to a series of interlinked video portraits of a fourth-age female nude in 7 p., cuis., s. de b… (à saisir) (1984) and to Varda's bold and innovative exploration and performance of her own old age in her co-directed film Visages villages (2017). The latter foregrounds consistently the physical and affective dimensions of old age and may be read not only as an extended self-portrait, but more broadly as a protracted exercise in empathy with older people. The article examines how the film cuts across thematic and aesthetic norms both by foregrounding older subjects and by validating them as fascinating and beautiful. It also reads Visages villages as a powerful appeal to an intergenerational ethics of care, established in part through Varda's creative partnership with street photographer and artist JR.Résumé:Cet article analyse des œuvres d'Agnès Varda choisies pour l'originalité de leur contribution à la gérontologie culturelle. Il se concentre sur l'intérêt profond que Varda porte aux personnes âgées tout au long de sa carrière et démontre comment, par le biais des portraits et autoportraits expérimentaux, elle aborde la vieillesse en exploitant des procédés surprenants — temporaux, spatiaux, esthétiques, haptiques et affectifs — afin de lancer un défi à l'âgisme et aux présomptions automatiques d'invalidité, et d'encourager l'identification. L'article porte une attention toute particulière à une série de portraits vidéos interconnectés d'une nue dans son quatrième âge dans 7 p., cuis., s. de b… (à saisir) (1984), et à l'exploration et la représentation courageuses et innovatrices que fait Varda de sa propre vieillesse dans le film co-réalisé Visages villages (2017). Ce dernier souligne sans relâche les dimensions physiques et affectives de la vieillesse et peut être interprété non seulement comme un autoportrait prolongé, mais plus largement comme un exercice soutenu d'empathie envers les personnes âgées. L'article examine comment le film se différencie des normes thématiques et esthétiques, à la fois en mettant les personnes âgées au premier plan et en faisant d'eux des êtres fascinants et beaux. De plus, il interprète Visages villages comme un appel puissant à une éthique intergénérationnelle du care établie, en partie, par le duo créateur formé par Varda et le photographe et artiste urbain JR.","PeriodicalId":43650,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH STUDIES","volume":"77 1","pages":"602 - 613"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"61366222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Modelling Age: Ageing Women Writers and Their Readers (Annie Ernaux, Margaret Drabble)","authors":"D. Holmes","doi":"10.1093/fs/knad159","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1093/fs/knad159","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:Annie Ernaux and Margaret Drabble, both now in their eighties, are writers who throughout their long careers have charted the life course of women of their generation. Ernaux's Les Années (2008) and Drabble's The Dark Flood Rises (2016) share a focus on late life and — I argue here — represent cases of what Kathleen Woodward once defined as a much-needed feminist remodelling of old age. In this comparative analysis, I identify elements shared across these two generically and stylistically quite different works: their unromantic yet positive depiction of ageing women; their treatment of time and of relations between the individual self and the collectivity; the relationship each constructs between author and reader. The differences between them arguably point to the specificities of French and UK culture, notably in terms of the relative importance each attributes to sexuality throughout the life course. Overall, the two works converge more than they diverge in providing a vision of old age in the feminine that is at once clear-sighted and powerfully affirmative.Résumé:Annie Ernaux et Margaret Drabble, toutes deux octogénaires, sont deux écrivaines qui durant leurs longues carrières ont tracé le parcours de vie des femmes de leur génération. Dans Les Années (Ernaux, 2008) et The Dark Flood Rises (Drabble, 2016), les deux autrices envisagent la vie du point de vue de femmes qui en vivent la dernière partie, offrant à leurs lectrices et lecteurs de nouveaux exemples des modèles féministes de la vieillesse réclamés par la critique américaine Kathleen Woodward. Dans cette étude comparative, je trouve des éléments communs entre ces deux œuvres, pourtant très différentes sur le plan générique et stylistique: leur portrait réaliste mais néanmoins positif de la vieille femme; leur manière de peindre la temporalité et les relations entre la situation personnelle de l'individu·e et la collectivité; leur adresse aux lectrices et lecteurs. Certaines des différences entre les deux textes sont aussi révélatrices, car elles indiquent des différences entre la culture britannique et la culture française, notamment au niveau de l'importance attribuée à la sexualité tout le long de la vie. Globalement, néanmoins, les deux textes convergent plus qu'ils ne divergent dans leur vision à la fois lucide et résolument positive de la vieillesse au féminin.","PeriodicalId":43650,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH STUDIES","volume":"77 1","pages":"558 - 571"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"61366441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
