While second-wave feminism concentrated its efforts on women's bodily, reproductive, and financial autonomy as a reflection of the concerns of the young women at the heart of the movement, second-wave feminists have since questioned the goal of independence as they have moved into middle and old age. Modelling the interdependencies posited by second-wave feminists as sustaining both individual lives and wider communities, recent women's writing in French is shown to engage with the re-evaluation of in/dependence in its contemplation of the relationships formed by its authors and textual subjects. Through a critical framework of research in feminist ethics and gerontology, this article offers close readings of recent works by Noëlle Châtelet, Annie Ernaux, Nancy Huston, and Douna Loup that feature new bonds of intimacy built on reciprocity, exchange, and mutual dependence to envisage scenarios of ageing that recognize our complex mutual dependencies while pushing back against the myths and stereotypes of ageing.Résumé:Cet article analyse la manière dont les auteures francophones du vingt-et-unième siècle réenvisagent les relations d'amour, d'intimité et de connexion dans la vieillesse, en s'éloignant alors de l'idéal d'indépendance pour valoriser l'interdépendance. Tandis que le féminisme de la deuxième vague a concentré ses efforts sur l'autonomie corporelle, reproductive et économique des femmes en vue des préoccupations des jeunes femmes au sein du mouvement, les féministes de cette deuxième vague se sont, avec l'âge, de plus en plus interrogées sur l'indépendance visée. À l'instar du modèle d'interdépendance avancé par les féministes de la deuxième vague comme fondamentale tant au niveau individuel que collectif, les publications récentes d'auteures francophones répondent à l'invitation de la réévaluation de l'in/dépendance dans sa réflexion des relations entamées par ses auteures et leurs sujets. À travers un cadre critique des recherches en éthique féministe et en gérontologie, cet article propose des lectures critiques des publications récentes de Noëlle Châtelet, Annie Ernaux, Nancy Huston et Douna Loup qui présentent de nouveaux liens d'intimité basés sur la réciprocité, l'échange et la dépendance mutuelle pour envisager des scénarios du vieillissement qui reconnaissent la complexité de nos dépendances mutuelles tout en repoussant les mythes et les stéréotypes du vieillissement.","PeriodicalId":43650,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH STUDIES","volume":"77 1","pages":"572 - 586"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"61366666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In France and on the international stage, Depardieu eschews traditional notions of ageing masculinity on screen, making space for bolder, if not uniquely tender, visions of what it means to embrace decline in the modern era. Analysing a small corpus of Depardieu films, Valley of Love (2015), The End (2016), and Robuste (2021), this article spotlights a major star who has largely fallen out of public favour, yet who has undergone a series of filmic rebirths since 2010, each of which evokes reminiscences of his major cinematic legacy.Résumé:Cet article considère Gérard Depardieu en tant que personnage omniprésent et monstre sacré du cinéma français qui se présente, et qui est présenté, comme une figure pionnière radicale de nouveaux modèles de vieillissement. En France, ainsi qu'à l'échelle internationale, Depardieu contrecarre toute notion traditionnelle de vieillissement masculin à l'écran, introduisant des représentations audacieuses, et parfois tendres, du déclin de l'être humain à l'ère moderne. En prenant pour objet les films Valley of Love (2015), The End (2016) et Robuste (2021), cet article met en lumière une vedette largement tombée en disgrâce, mais qui émerge rajeunie dans ses films depuis 2010, chaque exemple rappelant les vestiges de son héritage cinématographique capital.","PeriodicalId":43650,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH STUDIES","volume":"77 1","pages":"587 - 601"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"61366601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Dementia and Relational Forms in Gaspar Noé's Vortex (2021)","authors":"Emilija Talijan","doi":"10.1093/fs/knad161","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1093/fs/knad161","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:As the number of diagnoses grows, dementia increasingly seems to represent old age and the cultural fears that surround it. Representations of dementia have recently begun to multiply in a range of cultural forms as their authors rise to the challenge of exploring a condition that is frightening and hard to grasp. This article examines how Gaspar Noé's latest film, Vortex (2021), provides a unique cinematic reckoning with dementia through its use of a split screen to register each character's movements, independent from and simultaneous to the other. It argues that the split screen, along with a dense intertextuality and cinematic self-reflexivity, allows for an exploration of relationality that opens up multidirectional forms of narrative, attention, and care. Through these strategies, Vortex dismantles the illusion of the autonomous subject that dementia is often seen to threaten. The article asks about the ethics of representation with regard to Alzheimer's disease and considers how Noé's film, within the context of French cinema, might offer a different way of representing the illness: how does Vortex move beyond a neuroscientific reduction of self to memory, while also resisting a compensatory reframing of Alzheimer's disease to such a positive degree that it disavows the pain and loss that the disease causes?Résumé:Avec l'augmentation du nombre de diagnostics, la démence devient de plus en plus emblématique de la vieillesse et les craintes culturelles qui l'entourent. Les représentations de la démence ont commencé à se multiplier dans les différents champs de la culture, et témoignent de la manière dont leurs auteurs se confrontent à cette maladie effrayante et difficile à appréhender. Dans cet article, nous examinerons de quelle manière Vortex (2021), le film le plus récent de Gaspar Noé, fournit un engagement audiovisuel unique avec la démence grâce à l'emploi d'un écran dédoublé pour enregistrer les mouvements, indépendants mais simultanés, de chaque personnage. Le dispositif du double écran, renforcé par une dense intertextualité et auto-réflexivité, permet d'explorer le sens de la relationalité dans une perspective multidirectionnelle et de déployer une pluralité de récits, de formes d'attention et de soins. À travers ces stratégies, Noé défait l'illusion du 'sujet autonome', supposément menacé par la démence. C'est la fonction éthique de la représentation de la démence qui est interrogée dans cet article où l'on s'attachera à montrer comment Vortex, dans le contexte du cinéma français, propose une manière différente de représenter cette maladie: comment Noé parvient-il à s'affranchir des théories de neuroscience qui réduisent le soi à la mémoire tout en refusant de proposer une lecture positive et réparatrice de la démence où seraient niées la peine et la perte qui l'accompagnent?","PeriodicalId":43650,"journal":{"name":"FRENCH STUDIES","volume":"77 1","pages":"614 - 628"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"61366496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
