Our study shows that over 90% of users can tolerate a data rate of 80 KBps and above (when the delay is 400ms) and over 95% of users can tolerate delay up to 1 second (when the data rate is 100 KBps). Our study shows that data rate and delay tolerance levels do not vary significantly among the three meshes we used.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127476675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is known that these two applications are now tightly coupled, with many new videos being tweeted among Twitter users. Unfortunately, video sharing sites are facing critical server bottlenecks and the surges created by Twitter followers would make the situation even worse. To better understand the challenges and opportunities therein, we have conducted an online user survey on their personal preference and social interest of Internet video sharing. Our data analysis reveals an interesting coexistence of live streaming and storage sharing, and that the users are generally more interested in watching their friend's videos. It further suggests that the users are willing to share their resources to assist others with close relations, implying node collaboration is a rationale choice in this context. In this paper, we present COOLS (Coordinated Live Streaming and Storage Sharing), an initial attempt toward efficient peer-to-peer tweeting of user-generated videos. Through a novel ID code design that embeds nodes' locations in an overlay, COOLS leverages stable storage users and yet inherently prioritizes living streaming flows. Preliminary evaluation results show that, as compared to other state-of-the-art solutions, COOLS successfully takes advantage of the coexistence of live streaming and storage sharing, providing better scalability, robustness, and streaming quality.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128938705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To adopt SVC in P2P streaming, two key design questions need to be answered: 1) layer subscription: how many layers each peer should receive? 2) layer scheduling: how to deliver to peers the layers they subscribed? From the system point of view, the most efficient solution is to maximize the aggregate video quality on all peers, i.e., the social welfare. From individual peer point of view, the solution should be fair. Fairness in P2P streaming should additionally take into account peer contributions to make the solution incentive-compatible. In this paper, we show that taxation mechanisms can be devised to strike the right balance between social welfare and individual peers' welfare. We develop practical taxation-based P2P layered streaming designs, including layer subscription strategy, chunk scheduling policy, and mesh topology adaptation. Extensive trace-driven simulations show that the proposed designs can effectively drive layered P2P streaming systems to converge to the desired operating points in a distributed fashion.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129865729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uniquely, our system integrates with social networking services and builds on the social graph to help form an understanding of user behaviour and potentially socially-motivated trends. By combining these attributes we are able to represent a social user journey for each user of the system which we seek to exploit for identifying potential trigger conditions. The paper concludes with an initial analysis of data collected during a five month trial of the service with staff and students of our University.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115778468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analyze the behavior of two placeshifting systems each using two types of broadband networks. We show that the duration between packets did not depend on the way that the servers were sending the packets through the bottleneck link. Even though both of these systems used TCP, the duration between packets did not follow the round trip times either. Instead, it depended on the particular broadband network. Our analysis shows how the bottlenecked first mile network leads to predictable packet delivery at the remote client. Paradoxically, it also leads to shorter periods and a single packet within each data burst. We discuss the limitations imposed by this behavior on a client side energy saving mechanism. We also describe techniques that allow the placeshifting servers to better operate with client side WNIC energy saving mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131248908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a novel continuous virtual machine checkpointing and replay system that combines virtual 3D graphics support, continuous and high frequency virtual machine checkpointing, and virtual machine time travel. The system consists of, a video capture subsystem that constantly captures visual-audio output of a live 3D application running as a hypervisor guest, a checkpointing subsystem that incrementally and periodically preserves states of the running guest at fine granularity in real time, and a video and virtual machine replay subsystem that supports time travel of checkpointed guest to any prior point corresponding to the image frame in the captured video sequence. The system binds captured live video with continuous virtual machine checkpoints. As a result, the system offers novel video based interactive experiences where checkpointed 3D applications such as computer games can be restarted and continued from any frame point of a live video clip. A prototype of the described system was developed using Xen hypervisor and some research findings are reported in this paper.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115644607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cornerstone to MMOGs is the underlying network traffic between MMOG clients and servers; understanding this traffic is important for application developers trying to improve game performance and for ISPs trying to provide a better quality of service for their customers. In this paper we present fine-grained approaches at modeling SL client-server traffic. Our approaches differ from existing modeling work as they focus on the analysis of specific in-world actions, on the decomposition of the collected samples in subsets of packets with the same size, and on modeling the dependencies between packets in the sample. We compare our different approaches between them and with the original collected sample using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test statistic on packet size and inter-arrival time. We observed over one order of magnitude improvement of our models in the KS statistic for packet size and three time improvement for packet inter-arrival time compared to a bivariate 2-component Gaussian mixture model.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121980139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further advances in stereo and multi-view video, 3D graphics, spatial audio, Wii-like interface, 3D displays, and other multi-modal sensory devices, all contributing to acquisition, generation, display and control of new 4D media, already have and will have major impact on the next generation of multimedia systems and networks. In this talk we will discuss vision of active 4D multimedia delivery systems and the challenges of providing interactive, immersive participation and pervasive 4D delivery to millions of viewers. The problems for the multimedia system/networking community range from developing next generation of distributed algorithms, protocols and services organizing the 4D stereo and multiview/ spatial content over Content Distribution Networks, to developing easy and flexible configuration and deployment capabilities of the new cyber-physical 4D multimedia systems as well as new services on diverse devices to enable them playing and actively controlling content on these active 4D tele-vision systems.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130319895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In popular programs, our measurement on PPLive for a continuous three-month period at various locations also shows numerous occurrences of quality degradation because of the even higher ratio (up to 190%) of repetitive data requests for the same data chunks. These results motivate us to investigate effective data ex- change strategies to reduce data request contentions for im- proved streaming quality. IDEA, an Improved peer Data Exchange Algorithm, is proposed to carefully select chunks to request from different peers. We conduct extensive sim- ulations and the results show that IDEA significantly out- performs the widely used algorithms in deployed systems.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127043112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
