At the same time, accessing the Internet over public WiFi and 3G networks has become part of our everyday lives. However, streaming video in wireless environments is often subject to frequent periods of rebuffering and characterized by low picture quality. In particular, achieving smooth and quality-adaptive streaming of live video poses a big challenge in mobile scenarios. Building on the observation that the subjective video experience on mobile devices decreases when quality changes are more frequent than every 1 to 2 seconds, we present a client-side scheduler that retrieves segments of several video encodings over heterogeneous network interfaces simultaneously. By extending the DAVVI streaming platform with support for multiple interfaces, the proposed scheduler's performance is experimentally evaluated. The results show that our scheduler reduces the video interruptions and achieves a higher and more stable average quality over multiple, truly heterogeneous wireless interfaces.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"31 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129630980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies have focused on aggregate statistics of video popularity over time, and only recently has work been done which analyzes user behaviour variability over time. We are interested in a video storage/distribution system that uses peer resources to help content providers distribute video content to nodes in a network over long periods of time. Such a system is intended to operate on local principles of utility associated with each peer. More than ever, a workload model based on long-term user behaviour is required. In particular, it is unclear how request patterns driven by local utility can be shaped to match expected large-scale aggregate request characteristics such as a Zipf-distribution for overall popularity. In this paper, we describe early work in developing a workload generator for a Peer-based PVR (Personal Video Recorder) system to demonstrate some of these challenges.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126449904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, users can copy the embedded URLs of the videos of YouTube and post on their own blogs. Clearly, the purpose of such functionality is to increase the distribution of the videos and the associated advertisement. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive measurement study and analysis on these external links. With the traces collected from two major VOD sites, YouTube and Youku of China, we show that the external links have various impact on the popularity of the VOD sites. More specifically, for videos that have been uploaded for eight months in Youku, around 15% of views can come from external links. Some contents are densely linked, for example, the comedy videos can attract more than 800 external links on average. We also study the relationship between the external links and the internal links. We show that there are correlations; for example, if a video is popular itself, it will likely have a larger number of external links. Another observation is that we always find that the external links of Youku usually have a higher impact than that of YouTube. We conjecture that a more regional site may enjoy a relatively higher impact from the external links.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130862677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such studies are known to be expensive and difficult to administer. They require time, a detailed knowledge of experimental designs and a level of control which can often only be achieved in a laboratory setting. Hence, only very few researchers consider running subjective studies at all. In this paper we present Randomised Pair Comparison (r/pc), an easy-to-use, flexible, economic and robust extension to conventional pair comparison methods. r/pc uses random sampling to select a unique and small subset of pairs for each assessor, thus separating session duration from the experimental design. With r/pc an experimenter can freely define the duration of sessions and balance between costs and accuracy of an experiment. On a realistic example study we show that r/pc is able to create stable results with an accuracy close to full factorial designs, yet much lower costs. We also provide initial evidence that r/pc can avoid unpleasant fatigue and learning effects which are common in long experiment sessions.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132366262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The potential impact of such technologies demands careful study to assess performance and impact. This project studies one such personal video streaming system called Orb in a closed network environment, allowing us to control network bandwidths. Our performance evaluation focuses on Orb's method of bandwidth estimation, video performance and bitrates, and resource usage during transcoding. Analysis shows Orb uses simplistic, but effective, methods of determining available bandwidth, dynamic temporal and spatial scaling, and significant CPU cycles when transcoding. The results should be useful for subsequent comparison with other home streaming technologies and capacity planning for network providers.","PeriodicalId":436504,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 20th international workshop on Network and operating systems support for digital audio and video","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115599255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
