NAVI working concept is based on 'image to sound' conversion whereby input image captured from the video sensor is processed and transformed into stereo sound pattern. The sound is conveyed to blind's auditory system via stereo headphones. Processing in NAVI can be divided into two sub modules, which are the vision module and sonification module. In the vision module, image processing is employed to identify objects from the image. This paper presents an improved object identification methodology for NAVI. Objects are identified by its closed boundary. Properties of each object are evaluated using AI technique as to assign vision preference, so that blind user can determine the location as well as other properties of that object. Experimentation and results are presented to evaluate the proposed methodology for blind navigation purposes.","PeriodicalId":434986,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Region 10 Conference TENCON 2004.","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130155832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The printed dipole antenna with wider bandwidth than that of the conventional patch antenna is suggested. The slot of the printed dipole could find accurate matching point and improve the antenna gain. According to the measured results, the gain of the antenna was 2.38 dBi and the conversion efficiency of the detector was 40.3% at the load resistance of 3.2 k/spl Omega/. The transmitted power from the reader is 500 mW (27 dBm) and the gain of the reader antenna is 14.57 dBi. The received power was 1.51 mW (2.2 V, 687 /spl mu/A) at the distance of 1.5 m from the reader. Also we suggest an ASK modulation method using a bipolar transistor to compensate the disadvantage of the conventional PIN diode, which needs large current.","PeriodicalId":434986,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Region 10 Conference TENCON 2004.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128897142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transient voltage content ratio (TVCR) and transient voltage singularity ratio (TVSR) are deduced according to the difference of high frequency voltage transients at each end of the transmission line when in-zone faulted and out-zone faulted. Protection criterion using TVSR is proposed, and the principles of protection settings are given. The criterion is suitable for both two-end line and T-type line. Simulations of different faults and different line types are carried out for testing and analyzing the protection criterion.","PeriodicalId":434986,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Region 10 Conference TENCON 2004.","volume":"305 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132167726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate the influence of tuning latency on the performance of different architectures of single-hop WDM star networks. Two configurations are mainly considered: one slowly tunable transmitter and multiple fixed receivers (STT/MFRs) and single tunable transmitter and single fixed receiver (TT/FR). For both configurations one home channel is pre-allocated to each node. Assuming the traffic is non-uniformly distributed, an optimal channel allocation with a simple mixed integer linear programming model is proposed for STT/MFRs. To investigate the performance, evaluation through simulations is done in terms of network throughput, packet delay. The results show us TT/FR is tuning latency architecture, while STT/FR is not a tuning latency sensitive architecture. TT/FR configuration requires very quickly tunable transmitters, while STT/MFRs configuration can make use of the off-the-shelf low cost slowly tunable optical components to yield good performance.","PeriodicalId":434986,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Region 10 Conference TENCON 2004.","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130910564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project was carried out taking advantage of new and emerging information technologies. CITRA, which uses the CD-ROM and computer as the means of dissemination, is a didactic tool that comprises of four strictly interrelated learning modules: (i) storytelling world module, (ii) enjoyable reading world module, (iii) word enrichment corner, and (iv) mind test land module that consists of moral values appreciation test and application test, which focus on the presentation and evaluation of moral knowledge. The design and development of CITRA was made using the experience from other interactive multimedia applications, as well as referred to education and Malay literature specialists. The principle objective of this project is to create a didactic tool that uses different communications mediums within a single computer program, which allows the positive images of stories to be projected and can foster good moral sense in children. The paper also discusses the findings of the research, which indicates that the use of CITRA is significantly more effective as compared to the use of conventional instruction method in projecting positive values and images of narratives for assisting in moral education teaching learning.","PeriodicalId":434986,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Region 10 Conference TENCON 2004.","volume":"B 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130236894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Classical turbo en-decoding is only used to channel en-decoding for CDMA systems, in this paper we present multimodes turbo en-decoding to increasing the capacity of the CDMA systems. The proposed scheme is based on the code division multiple access scheme and turbo en-decoding filtering. In a CDMA cell, base station adopts K turbo en-decoders to divide the mobile users in the cell into K different groups. The N spreading codes of a cell can be assigned to different mobile stations in the K different turbo en-decoding groups, so the number of users in a CDMA cell can be increased K times. The bank of matched filters is used to detect user signals in the same turbo group, so the number of users can be K times of original one. Simulations verified the approach to be effective.","PeriodicalId":434986,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Region 10 Conference TENCON 2004.","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127621345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conceptually, the watermark retrieval is achieved from the prediction of a linear combination of neighboring pixel values around a watermarked pixel. By discarding the most different pixel value from eight surrounding pixels, the bias caused by an unequal bit pattern of watermark signal and too much difference in value of neighboring pixels can be reduced. The experimental results show the improved performance of the proposed retrieval method, even if the watermarked images are attacked by various types of digital signal processing i.e. high pass filtering, blurring, and uniform distributed noise adding, compared to previous methods.","PeriodicalId":434986,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE Region 10 Conference TENCON 2004.","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131309328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
