These kinds of distribution transformers are commonly used in distribution systems to supply single-phase lighting loads and three-phase power appliances simultaneously. Using the proposed models, along with appropriate three-phase power flow programs, the inherent characteristics of distribution transformers can be retrieved correctly. The major considerations involve copper loss, core losses, phase angular displacement between primary and secondary voltages and off-nominal tapping of the transformers. Based on the proposed models, three distribution transformers with unbalanced loads are analyzed in detail in this paper. The simulation results show that the proposed models can accurately emulate the performance of a physical distribution transformer in a distribution system even under unbalanced conditions.","PeriodicalId":434526,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of EMPD '98. 1998 International Conference on Energy Management and Power Delivery (Cat. It is the behavior of grounding objects under impulse voltage instead under DC voltage that determine the safe operation of equipment. However, the existing method and equipment cannot meet the requirement. A new method to realize accurate measurement of grounding impedance and a device, which can produce adjustable wave form of impulse voltage with enough power, can automatically measure and calculate the grounding resistance and inductance, is presented in the paper. The measurement principles, hardware structure and numerical method are described, then the results of experimental results and field measurement results are presented. From these results, we can see that the principle proposed in the paper is correct, the device can meet the requirement of practical measurement, can be used in practical measurement of grounding parameters, which is useful for safe operation of equipment and for economical construction of grounding net.","PeriodicalId":434526,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of EMPD '98. 1998 International Conference on Energy Management and Power Delivery (Cat. Qualitative knowledge about the system behaviour is adequate for designing the controller. This paper presents a fuzzy logic coordinated modulation controller for improving the damping of electromechanical oscillations of an AC-DC power system that consists of an HVDC scheme embedded in an interconnected four-area AC power system. The proposed controller coordinates the modulation of current in the DC link and generator excitation in the rectifier side AC system, in response to the frequency difference between the two ends of the DC line and DC current deviation. Simulation results revealed that a fuzzy logic coordinated modulation controller can be successfully implemented to improve the damping of electromechanical oscillations in an interconnected power system.","PeriodicalId":434526,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of EMPD '98. 1998 International Conference on Energy Management and Power Delivery (Cat. The existence of chaotic motion under some conditions is confirmed by the calculation of maximum Lyapunov exponents. It is revealed numerically that the random-like motion of Arnold diffusion can carry the system state arbitrarily close to any region of the phase space consistent with energy conservation while the ordinary chaos is only inhabited in a specific region of the whole phase space. A brief analysis of the reason for diffusion is also included.","PeriodicalId":434526,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of EMPD '98. 1998 International Conference on Energy Management and Power Delivery (Cat. Utilities have to maintain these cables usually at great cost in order to minimise disruption in services due to cable failures. In extreme cases, the cable systems have to be pulled down to check for defects in cable sections and any wear and tear in the cable protection and sheaths. The prohibitive costs of such preventative maintenance procedures has led to the search for alternative means where the costs involved are not quite as high. One option being considered is a monitoring system that can warn on possible failures so that local maintenance action can be taken. Before such a system can be put in place, extensive simulations are required on the practical system to build up a knowledge base of no fault and faulted conditions that can be used by the monitoring system. This paper presents an approach to the analysis of transients in cable sheaths using EMTP. The results show a high potential to develop a monitoring system.","PeriodicalId":434526,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of EMPD '98. 1998 International Conference on Energy Management and Power Delivery (Cat. Typical applications can be found in static VAr generation, power line conditioning, and voltage balancing. Multilevel voltage source inverters consist of many single-phase inverters. Charged capacitors may be used as DC input voltage sources. In most cases, the single-phase inverters are treated as identical. This paper presents the design and implementation of a variable amplitude multilevel voltage source inverter. In this inverter, capacitors used as input DC voltage sources are charged at different voltage levels according to pre-designed values. Several approaches in searching the optimal levels are investigated. A near optimal scheme is studied. It is found that the near optimal pattern has almost the same level of harmonics distortion as the optimal one. The near optimal scheme is implemented using a TMS 320C50 DSP card. Some experimental results are compared with simulated data. The two results are in agreement.","PeriodicalId":434526,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of EMPD '98. 1998 International Conference on Energy Management and Power Delivery (Cat.
