One introduces the generator coherent clustering and electrical distance to reduce the number of features, and the other adopts a linear neural network to perform feature extraction and trains it together with all the sub-neural networks. The algorithm is based on minimizing a weighted quadratic performance index. Different weighting factors are assigned to the active and reactive power mismatches, together with power system variables to form the quadratic performance index. Large weighting factors should be assigned to the violating variables in order to bring them back to their limits. The required corrections of the independent variables are found by minimizing this performance index. The simulation is carried out on IEEE 30 and 118 bus test systems. This paper discusses the challenges of using an OPF program from the perspective of a new user. It points out the potential benefits of applying an OPF to the operation and planning of a power system. The difficulties and burdens that an OPF places on a user are outlined. The pitfalls in using an OPF that a user needs to watch out for are discussed. The proposed approach uses the multilayer feed forward neural network to determine the harmonic components in a six-pulse bridge converter. In this paper the detection of 5th, 7th, and 11th harmonic components from the distorted waves has been verified by means of the computer simulation. In this technique, a genetic algorithm is evolved to intelligently decide the initial weights and the connection in the artificial network to solve the unit commitment problem. By using the proposed approach, any stagnation during NN training can be prevented. Besides, the proposed NN converges into a global minimum for a given range of space. The NN would not be trapped into an undesirable local minimum as with the case of backpropagation algorithms. Arcing fault current occurs when voltage is high and increases in proportion to the voltage magnitude; then it decreases as voltage goes down. In this paper, a new HIF detection method that uses a backpropagation neural network as a fault detector is suggested. To analyze arcing fault current properties, the authors divided one cycle fault current into four equal spanned windows according to the voltage phase and applied the fast Fourier transform (FFT) to the current waveform in each window (window length is a quarter of a cycle). FFT magnitudes of the harmonic current were entered as input variables of the backpropagation neural network. In addition, application of the concepts of fractal geometry to analyze the chaotic properties of high impedance fault currents were described and the existence of chaotic behaviors are proved by evaluating the fractal dimension and phase plane. Known as custom power products, the technologies described in this paper provide protection against sags, swells, voltage flicker, harmonics, and other power quality concerns. The custom power products can increase the availability of sensitive load and reduce costs associated with process interruptions. This paper covers two custom power products that were developed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation under contract to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), which is a series-connected power electronics based device, quickly compensates for power system sags and swells. The distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM), which is a shunt-connected power electronics-based device, protects the electrical system from a polluting (flicker-producing) load.
