An implementation of such a communications server, based on a low cost PC with multiport and field bus cards, is presented. There is a clear trend in computer communications to apply fast and high bandwidth networking methods and elements. Their spread in the office environment is very promising and straightforward, but their direct application in the manufacturing environment needs some prior investigation. How will it affect the management and control tasks in manufacturing systems? Besides other effects, it will enable the widespread use of multimedia features, and the authors focus on that issue. As a real world application, the PROFIBUS parts FMS and DP of the European fieldbus standard were completely implemented using formal models. These implementations are successfully used in industrial applications and embedded systems. Our development method, results, and experiences during the development process are discussed. A closed, tool based method is the overall aim concerning the development life cycle to support the requirement definition as well as the implementation of the product code with final testing. To meet these needs, our approach defines some assumptions and constraints using the syntactic and semantic model of the specification language Estelle, aspects of the modelling process concerning the architecture, handling data abstraction and encapsulation of the specification language vs. real time data flow in the product code implementation, synchronous vs. asynchronous communications to local interfaces (e.g. physical layer or partly data link layer ASIC) and dealing with special local events like timeouts and interrupts in the specification and in the real time execution environment. The paper discusses advantages and also critical points using the formal way of the protocol development cycle. In theory, it is quite clear that formal description techniques enhance quality. RTA provides an analysis of the network traffic which can be used by an admission control mechanism to determine if the timing requirements of a new connection can be guaranteed without violating the requirements of already admitted connections. This type of admission control is required by several multimedia and almost all real time control applications. RTA is based on traditional fixed priority/rate monotonic real time CPU schedulability analysis. This makes it possible to combine communication analysis with CPU schedulability analysis, thus allowing system designers to use the same technique for assessing the timely behaviour of the entire system, including both CPU and network scheduling. The only assumption RTA makes about the ATM network is that the switches should be equipped with prioritised output queues, something which is true for many commercial switches. The main focus of the paper is on evaluating RTA. In the evaluation we compare RTA with Weighted Fair Queueing (WFQ) and the Calculus of Network Delays (CND). WFQ is the currently most popular method for providing performance guarantees, and CND provides an alternative analysis for prioritised queueing. With large group sizes and a faulty communication environment (e.g., prone to reception misses), existing protocols can collapse due to imperfect synchronisation mechanisms. We propose and evaluate a MAC layer Jamming Protocol (JP), applicable in Ethernet type media, whereby a site jams an out of sequence message thus preventing all other sites from delivering it. We present autonomous and intelligent domestic appliances that communicate with each other. Every electrical device is supported by a built-in LonWorks-Node that incorporates distributed algorithms. The main objectives are to provide logical relations between the devices, and to coordinate the energy consumption policy. All this happens in an autonomous, distributed way without any interaction with the user. CANopen Configure Device and Test (CDT) software has been developed by Newcastle University (UK) to facilitate the configuring and testing of CANopen devices. The CDT is further enhanced to perform conformance testing of I/O devices. To operate the software requires a PC running Windows and a CAN card supporting CANopen. It allows the use of any CANopen compliant object dictionaries to communicate with the device. Any object can be read or written, for both service data and process data communications. Synchronisation messages can be generated automatically, with real time display and control of synchronous data.
