The streamers are believed to be low density regions in which charge carriers can move more freely than in the surrounding dense medium [1]. For a needle — sphere electrode system, when the streamer emanates from the cathode needle a pulsed current is produced. The light emitted by the cathode streamer is also in the form of pulses which temporally correlate with the current pulses. When the needle is the anode, the current is in the form of a pulse train superimposed upon a continuous background current. This confirms the presently accepted fact that [1] PD occur in oil. In the breakdown process the formation of a “bubble” or “cavity” is accepted generally as a part of the initiatory process. When the bubble reaches a “critical size” a discharge occurs [2]. When such a discharge occurs it can be shown that the bubble can grow in size leading to second discharge which grows to a breakdown. If it bursts into smaller sizes the discharge stops [3,4]. Notwithstanding, the progress that has been achieved over the past several decades in the description and understanding of the various mechanisms that may precipitate electrical insulation system failure, corona or partial discharge measurements have retained their preponderant importance. In the previous reports, we have shown numerous light maxima and minima resulting from the accumulated trapped charge recorded on videotape and analyzed using a computerized image digitization system to obtain the charge and field profiles [1,2]. In this report, a further investigation of electric field and charge profiles using the Kerr effect is reported for energetic electron beam penetration into short circuited PMMA slabs in vacuum to simulate the space environment for a specific time or until breakdown takes place. Breakdown mechanisms and charge dynamics during the electron beam irradiation in PMMA are discussed. Electronic, thermal, chemical, mechanical and other effects cannot be separated a priori and the lifetime-limiting processes have to be established in each case under specified conditions, for a given material system. In this short overview, we summarize progress made in the past few years at Brown Boveri Research in two important subfields relevant to dielectric aging, namely charge injection and charge transport under high electrical field conditions. We do not wish to imply that the effects described in the following are always or predominantly the ones which limit the practical use of insulating systems. These were BaTiO3 capacitors for space use intended for dc service conditions; some were multilayer and some were single layer discs. Most passed the usual screening tests such as IR measurements and DWV, but several capacitors in each set had, compared to others in the same set, unusually high integrated corona charge transfer on ramping up to and also down from rated voltage. Heating at 85°C with leads shorted had to be done before each dc PD measurement to obtain reasonably repeatable data. Subsequent sectioning and SEM photographs revealed that if corona was above a certain level, the capacitors had cracks and delaminations as well as porosity, whereas below this they only had porosity. Data was also obtained on ac corona inception voltage to allow comparison with the above dc ramp test data. Calculation of the electric fields and currents produced in biological objects exposed to external sources requires knowledge of the dielectric constant and conductivity of the object at the frequencies of exposure. Variations in the dielectric properties can also be correlated with physiological changes. Finally, an understanding of the conduction and polarization mechanisms may eventually lead to an explanation of the observed biological effects of weak fields. This paper investigates the suitability of time domain methods for the determination of the dielectric spectrum (variation of capacitance, conductance and dielectric loss with frequency) of an apple.
