According to Anatolios, this account of Christ's work is deficient in that it fails to capture a ‘dialectic of transference and transformation’ in which Christ not only assumes the penalty of sin vicariously, but renders an appropriate, ‘doxological’ response to the penalty that transforms it from a purely reprobative divine act into a means of forgiveness. In this essay, I demonstrate that the early protestant tradition, in which the penal substitutionary view of atonement largely originates, does in fact preserve this dialectic in its understanding of the ‘satisfaction’ for sin that Christ accomplishes through his so-called ‘passive obedience’. I also show that multiple noteworthy figures in the tradition (including several who strongly influenced the development of penal substitutionary accounts of atonement) explicate Christ's satisfaction in overtly ‘doxological’ terms, portraying Christ's God-exalting agency in submission to sin's penalty as the basis for the atoning value of his suffering. I argue that this is true, but that this unity is fully intelligible only when its Christocentric and Eucharistic dimensions are foregrounded. Read alongside his Eucharistic theology, Christ emerges as the inexhaustible gift in whom divine and creaturely love meet without confusion, the one through whom God communicates the movement of his love in a form that creatures can receive and respond to analogically. Understood as a communication of God's glory, creation in all its beauty becomes a crucial means of human knowledge and sense of divine beauty. However, these accounts neglect Edwards's eschatology in its exclusion of the non-human creation from redemption, an exclusion that results from Edwards's definition of secondary beauty. The <i>telos</i> of the creation as a whole becomes subservient to the <i>telos</i> of humanity, and thus, once humanity's goal of union with God is achieved, the creation serves no other purpose. B. Macpherson termed the “theory of possessive individualism.” Although O'Donovan praises Calvin's anthropology and his account of law for its non-proprietary dimensions, the classical Protestant doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement appears to uphold the late-medieval and proto-modern account of moral agents as proprietary subjects. In this essay, I offer a reading of Calvin's soteriology, particularly his account of Christ's merit, to argue that his understanding of merit, which is central to the doctrine of penal substitution, entails a break with the proprietary conception of merit as privately possessed. In this article, I explore a way to interpret Barth's theology that could lead to a fruitful eco-theological perspective. First, criticism within existing scholarship on Barth's doctrine of creation will be examined. Next, what may seem like a surprising locus in Barth's theology in this regard, viz., his eschatology, will be examined. I argue that Barth's (unfinished) eschatology is closely related to his theology of creation: the eschaton does not introduce anything fundamentally new but rather serves as a recapitulation of earthly life.
