Theological responses to Hägglund emphasize the ‘worldly’ nature of heaven over-against overly Platonic, ‘otherworldly’ accounts of everlasting life. In contrast, I suggest Hägglund's critique fails to grapple with theocentric forms of creaturely consummation qualitatively distinct from mundane life. I critique Hägglund's ‘suspicious’ reading of Augustine and CS Lewis, and, in dialogue with Michael Rosen, suggest his account of what makes finite life meaningful participates in an early modern movement from heaven to ‘historical immortality’. The main theological issue is the absence of agreement on which doctrinal differences should or should not count as church-dividing. The author argues that the concept of the ‘hierarchy of truths’, introduced by Vatican II's <i>Unitatis Redintegratio</i> is a promising heuristic tool for distinguishing the doctrines that pertain to the ‘fundamental Christian faith’ and other important doctrines that do not have the same authoritative status. The author proposes that the agreement on the ‘Nicene faith’ could function as a sufficient condition for the Eucharistic communion between the two Churches on two grounds of the use of the Creed in the rites of initiation and the liturgy. The author subsequently articulates three potential objections to his proposal, responds to these objections, and finishes the paper with what could be called a ‘Nicene Formula of Reunion’. Through a careful study of Balthasar's metaphysics and kenoticism, this essay shows that Balthasar's <i>Trilogy</i> develops, in light of its kenotic reading of the immanent Trinity, a kenotically expressed metaphysics. The first part of the essay identifies several clashes of McCormack's theory with classical theism, explaining how their ontologies are mutually incompatible. The second part uses insights from romantic poetry and thinking in order to develop McCormack's concept of ‘ontological receptivity’ (in the Son) and introduce the new concept of ‘engaging’ (in Jesus) as its conceptual pair and to propose ‘affective unity’ as the basis for Christic unity.
